So, someone just gave me a zune 8gb for free today. Still in the box and everything. This laptop I'm working from has no tunes on it, and I've got about two weeks to fill this thing up before I deploy again. Whenever I try to think of songs or artists I get in a rut and end up only being able to come up with a few, so I'm enlisting the help of fellow f13'ers.

I really dig 80's, New Wave, and electronic stuff.

I also really dig oldschool rap like Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the like.

I also enjoy punk, with my favorite punk bands being The Clash and Rancid. I also dig some of the neo-punkish ska style stuff.

I'm not sure where Enter Shikari falls, but I dig the screamo + solid singing + synth that they do.

Classical music is great, but I only know the 'hits' if you will.

Classic rock is awesome. I enjoy Eric Clapton's work from all his bands. This also makes me think of Bob Seger. Also Santana.

I'm really into the Blues, and all styles. Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, BB King to name some major ones. Delta blues are good.

I guess what it boils down to is that I don't like new or southern rap, I don't like country aside from Texas country, and I don't dig most of the pop coming out these days.

I'm really open to all sorts of music though, and language doesn't matter.

I'm counting on the music nerds here at f13 - don't let me down!

Eh he could be like me when I go to download music I totally blank on bands.

Well that and I don't really listen to radio anymore, so anything new I pick up is through friends who introduce me to it.  Most new music sounds like ass to me.

80's stuff.. Well, that's pretty broad.

The Cure: Disentegration and Pornography
Any Replacements album
The Cult - two albums, Love and Electric
Gang of Four: any singles collection
Violent Femmes (self-titled)
Roth Van Halen
All Sonic Youth albums from EVOL until Dirty (which reaches into the 90's)

Well, if you like the Clash, you should like the gruff voiced Mike Ness as well (i.e. Social Distortion). One of my favorite bands.. all of their albums have something good on them.

Operation Ivy if you like Rancid

Various punk:

The Stooges - Fun House. You can not not have this fucking album. Also, just get their first one and Raw Power as well.

Really, if anything, just get this album and ignore everything else.

Wire - Pink Flag
Misfits - Box Set and Walk Among Us
Wipers - The 3 album Box set
Television - Marquee Moon
Siousxie and the Banshees - The Scream
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation
Rapeman - Two Nuns and a Pack Mule
Naked Raygun - Flammable Solid

Classic Rock:

CCR. They are literally the only band to have NEVER made one bad song.
All Stones albums until Some Girls
Get the early Yardbirds shit with Beck.
Every Doors album except Soft Parade.
Every Dylan album up to Blood on the Tracks
All Black Sabbath albums with Ozzy (think he ends on Sabotage)

If you like Bob Seger, then stock up on the Boss too. He's better.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly? Born to Run, Ashbury Park, the Wild the Innocent the E Street Shuffle

Hip Hop: Your collection means nothing without

Eric B & Rakim: Microphone Fiend
GZA - Liquid Swords
Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst

Odds and Ends:

Barrington Levy (reggae): Crucial Reggae collection
The Devil Makes Three, self-titled (kind of dark bluegrass)
Scott H Biram - Graveyard Shift
Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues singers
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
The first few White Zombie albums
Old 97's - Too Far to Care
The Quakes - Voice of America

Oh yeah, any album from Curve as well.

Yes, it's sort of girly industrial shit, but it's good. Probably good bangin music too depending.

Cuckoo is an awesome fucking album.  I go with more white guitar noise than industrial, but damn that woman has a voice that sounds like she spends half the day fucking.

Get some Polvo - Celebrate the New Dark Age and/or Exploded Drawing - Math rock at it's finest.

Alright! Looks like lots of good recommendations in the list and I appreciate the help. I've got to get to bed, but tomorrow I'll start browsing.

By the way, is Kazaa still worth using or is it totally infested with crap? If it's no good, what's the alternative?

I'm too lazy to see if they fit your taste...

The Hush Sound - Wine Red or Lions Roar to get a feel for their style
Lights - Drive my soul

I'd suggest more, but I'm young, hip and like "bad" music.. or something.

I'm a Jazzmaster player -- Hence, a My Bloody Valentine fanatic.

Yeah, I kind of didn't mean to bundle Curve as industrial. I like them mainly for Dean -- his riffs are sick. It's good noisy guitar music, much like MBV... just a little more electro.

I'll throw in a random Tom Waits recommendation here. He's got an enormous back catalogue that changes style fairly dramatically at times, but try some early stuff (Blue Valentine, Small Change) and some later too (Alice, Blood Money). Albums like Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs kinda bridge the gap between styles.

Amazing stuff, Waits is a genius with the most incredible voice I've ever heard.

My favorite Waits albums is still Closing Time actually -- before the crazy singing (which is great too). Just great piano songwriter shit...that really does sound like something played during "Closing Time".

You old romantic Stray  awesome, for real  I have to admit I'm more into the recent (ie last 20ish years) stuff - the harsher he gets the more I love it. Raw, scary, haunting, all works for me.

Not that I don't love the early stuff too - The Piano Has Been Drinking has to be one of my favourite songs ever :)

I haven't seen Queens of the Stone Age on here, so I'll jot them down. New Order is cool for an 80s fix and !!! is good for an updated version of that. (yeah, they're called '!!!')

I second Evil Rider with Led Zep and Stray with Liquid Swords. I'm surprised Stray [edit:didn't] submit Roky Erikson.

Sven Vath is a badass DJ if you like darker stuff. All of his 'Season' albums are cool- I think there's six in all.

The Matter + Form album from VNV Nation is cool.

Chromatics. Portishead.

As far as classical, I like Stravinsky and Charles Ives.

I did mention QOTSA at first, but figured he might have their albums. If not, then yeah, definitely.
You old romantic Stray

You got me.

Funny thing is though, my favorite track by him was from... well shit, can't remember.. a fairly recent album. It's called "What's He Building?", where he just plays the part of a worried neighbor, speaking to himself, wondering what dark secret the guy across the street is building in his house. Just fucking rich.. Wish he had a whole album of stuff like that.

Apoptygma Berzerk:  Norwegian
Bigod 20: German
Cosmicity: American
Clan of Xymox / Xymox: Netherlands
Covenant: Swedish
S.P.O.C.K. : Swedish
VNV Nation: English/Irish

An impressive list Schild.

According to your list you should probably look into Funker Vogt (another project by the guy from Ravenous), Haujobb (solutions for a small planet is their best album) early Project Pitchfork and Wumspcut (bad english alert however), Suicide Commando, In strict confidence and others. If you like Wolfsheim you should also consider De/Vision and And One (although they have their fair share of german songs) or even DAF/DOS. I'd also recommend some of the early EBM bands like Front 242 or the successor Cobalt 60.

But you most probably already know most of them anyway.

it's strange however to see someone from the US actually be a fan of German/European Darkwave, Gothic and EBM music.

Front 242 for days. Who can not like?

[edit] Uh, on the gothic note, I'll just recommend Christian Death, Only Theater of Pain. Goth music used to be so funny.... Not sure what happened.

I have all of that. And De/Vision. And And One (and I've seen them thrice).

These were recommendations for someone else. I tried to stay on the...less esoteric side of it all.

Edit: Also, Love Kills from In Strict Confidence is probably my favorite cover art from the entire genre. Ok, that's not fair, Wolfsheim's Spectator is pretty meta also. And I dig the Evil's Toy covers.

Did you not see the thread a while ago where I went nuts about finding the Celebrate the Nun CDs for like $2-$4 and then the other thread where we put together the f13 radio station thing? Here we go: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=1075.0

Edit 2: Oh Snap, how could I forget

Delerium - Spheres and Spheres 2
In the Nursery - Engel and Composite
Deine Lakaien - Kasmodiah

I could go through and give albums from all those bands before. But that's sorta a pain in the ass.

1. I don't have any Hello Kitty figurines. The only Hello Kitty thing I have was given to me by another f13er.
2. I probably have music from 50-100 countries from around the world, the vast majority of it entirely niche.
3. My favorite songwriter is Billy Joel. Elton John a close second. Queen is in my top 5 bands.

I could've listed generic regular rock shit, but why bother. He knows who to look for. You can live under a rock and know about generic rock shit from the past 30 years.

Yes, I take offense at mischaracterization.

I knew a lot of people in the mid-late 90s who could help (like Todd from A Different Drum, he found me a lot of shit, along with some of the folks around the Bella Morte scene in Virginia).

Also, I imported a lot, which cost way too much, but whatever.

No, I won't sell my Burning Empires set or CtN's Meanwhile. Or the Handful of Snowdrops albums. Heh.

If you need anything I'd be glad to dig it up and rip it.

Needless to say, wasn't easy tracking it all down.

One of the crown jewels of my collection I gave away because I couldn't play it, it was a certain piece of vinyl from Cabaret Voltaire, you could probably guess which if you know them.

Oh snap, on that note, it looks like CV put out a 3-disc set where I can get all the stuff I lost. Nevermind. No longer regret giving it away.

Edit: Christ, they put it out in 2001, whatever. Will pick that up when I find $50 to blow on an import CD set. /sigh. TBH, I haven't bought much in the last few years, so I'm horribly out of date on the European scene. I do try to keep up online, just not in the collection. Mine halts somewhere around 2004, with breaks in 02 and 03.

Grab something like Pandora or LastFM, enter some search parameters and you'll find all kinds of stuff to fill more than 8gigs.  I just rounded out my Downtempo play list in no time using LastFM group favorites.

Trying to track down specific bands will drive you nuts especially when you start weeding through their good stuff and bad stuff.

Well since you use the words 80's, electronic stuff, ska and synth, seems like you would want more reggae in the mix:

Steel Pulse - True Democracy album
Pato Banton - Never Give In album

You might possibly want to look into some Camper Van Beethoven which always gives me some good times in the 80's flashbacks.
