Halo 2 and Mechassault would be my immediate and honest recommendations.  Even then, I would consider passing on MA nowadays - MA2 is due in December.  If you like your FPS insanely fast, Unreal Championship 2 is due out soon.  If you like a more tactical game there is the R6 series.

Midtown Madness 3 is a good time-waster.

Lots of people here like the sports titles, I'll leave them to comment on those.

In no order:

Halo 2
Fatal Frame 2
Burnout 3
Links 2004
Top Spin
Dead or Alive: Ultimate (the pinnacle of that series, no question)

...and a slew of other stuff. I'll add more when I get home.

Halo2
The Bards Tale
Madden NCAA Football 2005 (Oregon does NOT suck this year! See? I won the National Championship! Goddamn USC)
NHL 2005 (it's the closest we're going to get this year. Fuckers).
KOTOR
Mech Assualt (with MA2 due any moment - as mentioned)
Prince of Persia
Thief 3

Sports titles are all better on the Xbox, so if you're interested in those, don't get them for any other platform. Actually, everything that is released on all three consoles is better in their Xbox versions.

Xbox exclusive titles: Halo, KoToR, Mech Assault, Ninja Gaiden, Top Spin, Links, Rallisport Challenge 2, Project Gotham Racing 2 (maybe)

Oh, and notice I didn't mention Fable. If anything, rent it.

Project Gotham Racing (1 or 2 - 2 has multiplayer on Live)
ESPN NFL 2k5 (only $20 and worth twice that... don't listen to the Maddenites)
Fable (fuck tha hatas)
Splinter Cell
Top Spin (if Tennis is your thing)
ESPN MLB

Halo 1(though halfway into the game, the levels get repetitive.  still a fantastic game)
Halo 2
Morrowind Game of the Year Edition(contains both expansion packs)
Splinter Cell: Pandoras Tomorrow
Red Faction 2(only if you like splitscreen multiplayer with friends.  singleplayer sucks ass.)
Fuzion Frenzy(again, only if you have alot of friends come over.  great collection of minigames.)
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Grand Theft Auto 2pack

I am still waiting for news about a port/new-version of Perfect Dark.  Microsoft paid half a billion dollars(500mil) for Rare, and we have seen very little out of the Rare team.

Crimson Skies hasn't been mentioned yet, IMO a very good game.

I'd echo the recommendations of :

TopSpin (best tennis game ever, one of the best sports games I've ever played)
MechAssault (can get this with XBL purchase)
Links 2004
ESPN 2K4 (good game + cheap)
Fable (I liked it)

Also if you don't have it on another system:
Beyond Good and Evil (slick game)
Gladius (not a great game, but a fun and long tactical rpg)

Knights of the Old Republic
Beyond Good And Evil
Prince of Persia
Crimson Skies
Namco Museum (Galaga! Dig Dug! Gauntlet! Pole Position!)

Can't go wrong with any of these.

Um, never mind.

Welp I have the list of the top 6 or 7 suggestions and will hop skip and run back next week and I saw all but halo 2 and Halo 1 in the used section so I'll hook those up with my buds 20% employee discount.

Were ordering mod chips and hardrives next week as well so I'll be "storing" a few as well.

I will also second Beyond Good and Evil, Great game.

And like every one else. KOTOR, GTA3 Double Pack.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the original, XBox exclusive one, not Chaos Bleeds, which is just OK, IMO)
KOTOR
Guilty Gear X2 #Reload
Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix (although Ultramix 2 is coming out).  Really just for the online aspect which I hope they fix in Ultramix 2.
Crimson Skies (especially if you have Live!)

Be prepared to buy an extra controller if you pick up Ninja Gaiden. You'll no doubt end up smashing it against the wall. Game was a bitch for me.

Slight derail:
I'm soooo close to springing for a console. But which?
I was really set on an Xbox, because I wanted the nice graphics and was all set on playing Fable and Burnout 3. Then GTA: SA came out, which is probably the game I'm most anticipating right now. Last I heard this would be out for Xbox and pc in late may... which coincides with the arrival of my second child - experience tells me, that whatever console I own for the 6-12 months after that, doesn't really matter much.

Sooo... PS2 or Xbox (I would never consider the GC for anything other than my second console, and I can't afford a second sonsole yet)?

My PS2 gathers dust. Any game released on all 3 systems is better on XBOX. XBOX exclusives tend to better (IMO) than the other 2 guys.

For DD, I'd second:

Beyond Good and Evil
KOTR
Halo 1&2
Gladius
Fable

PS2. I'd really like to argue in favor of the Xbox, but I can't. The PS2 may not have the better graphics or the conveniences of Live and the HDD, but there's a shitload more games, quality games, and many exclusive ones at that. Plus, a lot of them are cheap.

I think you might be able to afford both consoles though, if you bought them used. They're both worth it, but I think the PS2's advantages outweigh the Xbox's. If you plan on sticking to mainly sports titles, there's an argument there in favor of the Xbox, I think.

Fable isn't horrible, but it's not worth the price of a whole console. Bioware games maybe, the sports and racing titles, maybe. But not Fable. You really want to play Fable? Then buy a PS2 and get GTA: SA. It's delivers more on Fable's promises than Fable does and lasts 100 times longer (Haemish really needs to play it imo). As for Burnout 3, it's one of the games that looks just as good on the PS2 as it does the Xbox.

Make sure you get Halo1 and create a shrine around it.  God apparently smites those that do not bow before it's divinity.

I play on my Xbox and GC alot more then my PS2 but that's mostly because I generally play with friends and the xbox owns sportsgames and the GC owns partygames. The PS2 has alot more games to choose from though, specially if you're in rpg's and whatnot.

If you plan on playing alone I would go for the PS2. It has better exclusives then the xbox and the multiports are generally made with the PS2 in mind anyways.

I'm going to tell you X-Box. As for Fable vs. GTA, I've played both Vice City and GTA 3. Both deliver pretty well on what they offer. Fable is certainly shorter, but I don't think either are necessarily better games.

I finished Fable in 15 hours, and I still think it was a worthwhile purchase.

I just want you to check it out because besides the gameplay you get from the previous GTA games, it has some elements like those you mentioned in your Fable writeup. As well as some ideas from the Sims. It's a HUGE world, and one that you can effect in more ways than Fable allowed. It's a step closer to what we want, albeit in a single player game. It's near perfect (well, maybe not that..but there isn't much to complain about either).

I tried the demo for the first Splinter Cell on the PC, and found the stealth/creeping, and some of the wall moves, a bit hard to deal with keyboard/mouse input.  The XBox analog sticks seemed perfectly suited for Splinter Cell, imo.  If anyone has any PC analog-stealth tips, then I will buy all Splinter Cells for the PC(both for higher resolution and to show PC support).

I have not played the PC version, so I was simply going by what I know, that being the xbox version.  I'm betting the PC version is much nicer, though.

No one's mentioned the Dynasty Warriors series, which I love - yes, it is repetitive, but for something you can kill 1000 enemies on a map personally it is hard to beat (oh, I've got DW3 for the Xbox, but I think DW4 is out.) Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders is also just out which looks similar (but with a European fantasy theme rather than Chinese folklore) and has been getting good reviews.

I also liked Otogi: Myth of Demons, but some found it a bit too different to enjoy.

Personally, I love my Xbox, but until it is confirmed that the Xbox2 has backwards compatibility, I'd probably steer people towards a PS2.
