WoW, EvE and Runescape are the only mmos I've actually paid for. I would've added Planetside to that list if SOE hadn't raised the price by $2 effectively ending the debate I had with myself in justifying the subscription over an FPS game.

Planetside essentially lived and died by providing battles on a scale a normal FPS can't provide. It offered nothing else except a wide variety of units and vehicles you could plays as/with.

I'm interested in seeing a new MMOFPS being made hence part of the reason I'm checkig out Spellborn and Darkfall but I would prefer seeing a world with guns. Hopefully these devs are offer compelling differences between their MMO and an FPS.

From that write-up:

awesome, for real

I'd be tempted to register my interest... but it also could just be a scam ("Sign up here! We swear we'll pass your details on!"). Anyone in f13, who are pretty much anonymous and I only know you because you can string a sentence together, want to vouch for these guys as being legit?

If they demand real info of some kind (not fakeable), I say to hell with them.

It's not the asian shit you need to sign up with. The guys who did the write up want you to sign up with them to either A) Be added to a list to get a CD Key or B) gain access to the instructions on how to get signed up for the game.

Considering the devs asked for player information to be accepted into beta I think by passing on our info to the Outfit they will hand over that information to the devs. Not a big deal to me since I had to do that as well as give my dxdiag file to devs for testing. If you don't want to hand over real information just sign up with one of your aliases. This privacy measure should be as basic as having atleast two passwords by now.

Its not my outfit, but i have fought with them for quite a while. They are just another orf many Planetside outfits looking for the next planetside, or atleast a more modern one.

I went ahead and signed up on the forums. Its seems they are out of CD keys for this phase of the alpha/beta. A new phase starts this month. Apparently, as they said, there are two ways to get yourself a key. Go through the "questionnaire" on the Chinese site (there is a walk through on their forums, i can post it here if requested) or ask on the forums, at that time they will e-mail you a "CD" key. Thats about all the info they want really.

Alternatively, i read that the makes of the game are trying to gauge western interest, and just like they did, perhaps can be contacted to releace more keys to other groups.

There is a user named "season" on the website who is the contact with the development team. e-mail: fwn7432650 (At) hotmail (DOT) com

Anyway, i have signed up on the forums, and request a key. But like i said, doesn't look like this phase has started yet, and there may not be enough keys to go around using this avenue.

So four minutes of video to show it's still Planetside?  Could they maybe show why it'll be a better game than the one it's built on?

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

I think Lant is asking to be shown something new, instead of a Chinese version of Planetside.

Well yeah. It's not like Planetside is dead already. I mean, maybe it is, but it's not.

Chinese Motor City Online? I am all for it.
Chinese Planetside? What's the point?

Unless there are some new tricks under the hood. Then I am all ears.

It has a lot in common with planetside yes. But its an updated version of the engine, and using a diffrent net code for one. From what i can tell it has a lot of things diffrent than PS, real urban combat for one, no separated planets and from what i understand a command structure. Of course the game play, pacing, and weaponry are all diffrent as well as vehicles having different utility than PS counterparts. Its not PS, but an expansion/modernization of it.

I hope I am doing something wrong, but looks like you have to manually download and apply many patches. And the client is 420mb. I feel like I am back to the 20th century.

Tried it.

UGH!  ACK!

Long version: it's a Planetside ripoff, down to color palette, maps and UI. In chinese.
I think SOE could sue and easily win.

Modernization? I laugh.
Improvements? You won't notice any unless you played the original for a long time. I played PS for a few months back in the days, and can't see/remember any big difference.

I ask because the last impression I got of Planetside was "exploit-filled mess with very few players". If Welkin gets around some of those issues, I'm sold.

... in English.

As I said, and in all honesty, I didn't delve too much in Welkin yet, and I am not THAT expert of recent Planetside to give a fair opinion.
First impression: it's Planetside 1.1, not even 1.5.

Of which almost none was shown in their little beta video that I could tell.  What was there wasn't explained so it didn't seem much different than the last time I tried Planetside.  Thus my need to ask.

Hey, I found your link back to us.

We've been playing the open beta of Welkin4591 from the US for about a month now (and an early closed beta about 6 months ago) and it's quite good.  The goal of our site -- http://welkin4591.com -- is to help english-speaking players get in game.  We are hosting all the game files and have tutorials in the Wiki on our site showing you how to install, set up an account, create a character and play.

We're also on teamspeak and can show you around once you are in-game (or help you with any setup problems).

This is a great opportunity to play a newly-developing MMOFPS and have input into the development process.  It's well worth the effort to play.  And, as a longtime Planetsdie player and outfit leader, I think Welkin4591 has tremendous potential.   Despite the fact that the servers are in China, I can play just fine and don't experience any lag at all.

So, if you'd like to be part of what we hope will be the "next big MMOFPS" and help guide the development, head on over to http://welkin4591.com and join in!

Thanks.

How does it compare to CoD4? Aesthetics aside, is it basically just an improved Planetside? Or is it an actual FPS?

I'm curious as to how it dffers from the original planetside. In terms of game mechanics and design- would you term it a sequel, or a remake?

I'll try it out when I get back to my apartment
