Stopgap Measure

on: July 28, 2008, 05:03:20 PM

So I played the trial over the weekend and having a better idea of what to expect this time than the last trial I played years ago I found the game to be better.  I've been using those nice links in the link thread to create my character and do some skill planning.  I'm just sticking to empire and doing some mining right now while I do all the basic training I need but was wondering if you guys had a chat channel I could join so that I could ask you stupid newb questions.  I'm probably just playing for a few months until WAR comes out so I don't want to be a bother though.

I noticed you have two guilds, f13 and bat country.  What is the difference and if I wind up staying in the game which would make more sense to join as someone who isn't terribly into PvP ( at least not yet )?  Are there any particular rolls you would need filled?  If you are in 0.0 how do you get all the way to empire to sell your stuff or do you make money by ratting?

I must say having some spaceships and lasers to work with is refreshing, it cleanses the palate of all the fantasy diku...

If you have the ballz, mining in 0.0 as a 2 day old noob would be bad ass for your street cred :)

Regarding the question, BAT is probably the "main" corp where most of us live.  F13 is the corp we repurposed to be in the factional warfare system.

So, paradoxically, the 0.0 corp is the one you want to be in to be safe from PvP  awesome, for real

No No you DO want to take his money. Slayer's 'ill gotten' proceeds need to be donated to F13 newbies otherwise cosmic karma is unbalanced and the universe will explode. Explode I tell ya.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

F13 channel is a great place for information, there's alot to learn and it's very easy to get swamped.

Really, take the 10 Million. It will turn the newbie experience from painful to at least tolerable. It also goes a long LONG way when starting out.

I agree. The painful grind to get your first 10 million isk and into your first cruiser has got more newbies to quit than anything else. And there's just no need for it because after a few months of training you'll find that 10 million isk is really nothing at all for an established character.

Take the money.

If you're looking for a corp then Bat Country are probably the best option for you. Our little pocket of 0.0 is relatively safe, and if you want to get into some action we can stick you in a frig and you can come on some ops with us. If you need frigates for ops then I'm sure they can be supplied by us rich (...ish) 0.0 dwellers.

When you get into cruisers you can also rat in 0.0, so long as you don't take any battleship spawns yourself. I wouldn't mind tanking if in my BS if you wanted to tag along and kill some cruisers (at about 100k per cruiser). That's how I saved up for my first Battlecruiser. :) I'll also teach you the art of lucrative spawn retention.

Also remember to come along when Endie runs Frigate Club. They're great fun, and it'll give you a good introdution to fleet warefare in 0.0.

I'm pretty sure I've already made about seven million or so already, I bought my cruiser on Sunday and can now mine a lot better.  I'll have mining IV tomorrow and get some tech two lasers so that should be a big help.  I've also bought all the basic books I think I need including a bunch of the 500,000 isk ones.  I have my little Merlin for beginner agent work and bought my friend one too.  Mining is fine for now since all I'm doing is alt tabbing out to read up on the tremendous amount of stuff you need to know about how the game works.

Once I have a clue what I'm doing I'll come join you guys and have all my stuff blown up within a week due to my ignorance of game mechanics :)

Clones, update them <3

Also, insurance.

Those are the two "newbie ragequits EVE" mistakes. As long as your clone is up to date and your ship insured, dying isn't a big deal early on.

Is FW still going strong? I haven't mucked with it since my alt started on his long annoying road to logistics.

Well fair enough. You're the first newbie we've had in a while who was willing to go the mining route.  smiley

Still, mining too much early is another thing that makes people burn out and quit. And soon as it stops being mindlessly relaxing and becomes an awful, boring grind STOP!  And do something else.

Unless of course you don't insure at the platinum level.  I speak from experience: if you don't have enough to insure platinum, you don't have enough for the ship.

Also, if you decide you like mining, we have that in 0.0 too.

Also, get in a Battleship for mining ... they can be set up to mine about half as well as the best exhumer in the game IIRC. Then have Endie carrier jump you to 0.0 and make some cake :) And oh yeah, WATCH LOCAL !!!

I mine on an alt that's training up skills in highsec. It's hilariously inefficient, but also acts as a screensaver for that PC.  DRILLING AND MANLINESS

Though I switched to missions for my income, mining was making me insane, and all the >0.7 belts are stripmined by AFK people in exhumers.

There isn't much point in mining in providence. You'll make almost as much mining veld in empire without the risk of getting torpedoed by angry Russians or vengeful sansha's.

Don't forget Astrogeology for mining bonus.

My EFT shows:

Hulk , All Level 5 skills - 1747 yield per minute   with 5 Harvester Mining Drones
8000 cargo space

Megathron, all level 5 skills - 1077 yield per minute   (7 x Miner II, 1 Elara Mining Upgrade, 6 expanded Cargo, 5 x Harverster Mining Drones)
2900 Cargo

Covetor - 1500 with all level 5 skills and 5 x Harveester drones
4000 cargo

The nice part about using the mega/any high turret number BS is you want battleship skills anyway. Mining Barge 5 is fuckin useless for anything but mining. Exhumers are expensive.

But you could have an effective Battleship miner pretty quickly.

How much does a Domi w/ 5 mining drones yield?  One less turret, but the ability to swap drones in and out would be nice.

T1 mining drones suck.

T2 mining drones rock on a Vexor (it gives bonus to mining drone output), to the point where the Vexor will out-mine a Dominix.  Of course, training Mining Drones to 5 so you can get T2 drones is a waste of time, but shrug, I went for it.

EDIT:  Vexor with T2 mining drones and 4 Miner II lasers:  725 m3 / minute = half the output of that Hulk.  If you take Mining to 5 and Astrogeology to 5, you can probably get 760 m3 / min out of it.  Lows have 2 CPU's, 2 cargo expanders I think.  Meds have a large shield extender, enough to let you withstand fire from 950 rats long enough to recall your drones, align, and warp out.

Shrug.

Harvesters are 30 mil apiece.  Dominix + fittings would cost 60 mil, drones for it would cost 150 mil, and they CAN be popped by rats if you don't react fast enough.

But anyway, maybe I was wrong in my calculations and a Vexor won't out-mine a Dominix with T1 drones.  Go for it if you want.

Noooooo Don't use harvesters. Don't ever, ever use harvesters.

Harvesters are sloowwwwww and even if you're humping the rock, you'll lose more ore in travel time. Use mining drone IIs.

The Dominix also has the advantage of being able to tank and kill pretty much any rat spawn while mining, which is really advantageous if you're mining solo.

I've been basing my mining path on this guide.  Whoever did it is quite clearly insane and therefore has my respect and trust.

It has a section discussing battleship versus mining barge and basically says an Apocalypse will out mine the mid level mining barge but that the coveter is the best.  I don't think I want to put that much training into mining so I might just get the Apocalypse.  Of course the battleship is more expensive so I guess it depends on the money-gain versus skill time.

Random questions!

1) Is there a way to reverse the mouse wheel zoom in/out so that I can change it to the way God intended it to work?  I can't find that option anywhere...

2) I also still don't understand the difference between 0.5 space and 1.0, is the only difference the difficulty of the PvE rats or is there a PvP aspect to it too?

3) If your corp is at war with another corp are you allowed to shoot each other in 0.5 and above?

4) Is the only way to group with someone to form a fleet?  I couldn't find any way to make a gang and the fleet interface is more complicated so I think I'm accidently forming the equivalent of a raid when I only want a group.

5) Even if it's anchored anyone (with the space) can just come by and steal a secured can right?

1) No. Sorry.
2) Other than the rats the main difference is Concord response time - they respond almost instantly in 1.0 space but take a bit long in 0.5 space - Slayerik can probably tell you *exactly* how long ;)
3) Yes, you can pewpew warring corps anywhere with no Concord intervention.
4) Fleets are gangs. They used to be called gangs but now they're called fleets. Same thing. And all of EVE's interfaces are complicated, confusing and designed by brain-damaged invertebrates. You'll get used to it :)
5) No. Can't steal secured cans or stuff from them if they're anchored and passworded. Shooting them also gets Concord irate.

Fleets -- if you just invite people to your fleet without any other messing around you get the same functions as if you were in a gang (when they still existed), just no shared bonuses.   Bonuses require someone to have the right skills trained, and there's one that will improve your mining output so may be worth looking into fleets a little more when you're ready.

With the horrible fleet windows, I've found if you find the player('s) you're grouped with and right click on them and click monitor their health then you can basically minimize the other fleet windows and ignore them. There is a handy broadcast command that puts a clickable link up so everyone can be on the same target but very few people actually use it.

Most are probably like me and have no idea where the command is located. :)

When you're in a position of command in a fleet, your right-click menus have a few more options that allow you to broadcast targets, destinations, etc.  There are also buttons in the broadcasts window that allow you to call for armor repping, etc.

An Apoc or a Brutix will out mine anything but the 3 strip miner barges, but you'll come to hate yourself while using either at max capacity.
