I find that while they are fast, having to pay close attention to the cargo hold and keep it empty gets old really fast. When I go mine for ammo nowadays I usually use an iteron with 1 mining laser and a laser upgrade. It may take longer but I can basically forget I'm playing after an hour or so. Only problem is when the asteroid runs out and I don't notice for 15 min.
