So I'm looking to get something to record all of my mom's VHS tapes onto dvds. I remember this being advertised way back in the day but now-a-days I've been looking at all sorts of VHS/recordable DVD players and none of them mention the abillity to record a dvd using the VHS as a source (instead of the tv as a source).
is this pretty standard for all VHS/Rec DVD combos?
Yeah I did a bit of searching, they all wanted about the same price. Since I have about 10+ VHS tapes it's cheaper to buy a recorder and give it to my mom afterwards as a dvd player.

Why invent problems that haven't occurred? Anyway, you can get something open-source if you need to do that. This gets the hard part of moving video data from the VHS player to the computer out of the way for, uh, practically free.

I have a TV card on my media rig. I hooked the VCR up, played the tape and recorded it on the system's DVR, then burned it to disc. Bonus is, you still have the DVR and TV card after the fact.

Audio sync is rarely a problem if the video capture device captures the audio as well. I can't tell if the above card is doing that cause the specs say there's an audio out to a sound card as well.
