So I'm looking to get something to record all of my mom's VHS tapes onto dvds.  I remember this being advertised way back in the day but now-a-days I've been looking at all sorts of VHS/recordable DVD players and none of them mention the abillity to record a dvd using the VHS as a source (instead of the tv as a source).

is this pretty standard for all VHS/Rec DVD combos?

I'm sure they can I'm just too lazy to verify.  Also if this is a one time thing can't you just take it to one of those guys who'll do it for you?

Not quite sure how to search for a company that would convert them for me, but I didn't even think about that.  I'll look around.

Quick search yields this place:

Not sure if 20 bucks a pop is more economical than just doing it yourself.  You could always post on Craigslist as well.  awesome, for real

Yeah I did  a bit of searching, they all wanted about the same price.  Since I have about 10+ VHS tapes it's cheaper to buy a recorder and give it to my mom afterwards as a dvd player.

Until you have to fix the out of sync audio or some nonsense.

Why invent problems that haven't occurred?  Anyway, you can get something open-source if you need to do that.  This gets the hard part of moving video data from the VHS player to the computer out of the way for, uh, practically free.

If it's important to have more tools or a more integrated solution there are hundreds of cheapish devices for doing that here: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=47&name=TV-Tuners-Video-Devices

I have a TV card on my media rig.  I hooked the VCR up, played the tape and recorded it on the system's DVR, then burned it to disc.  Bonus is, you still have the DVR and TV card after the fact.

I don't have a VCR and my mother gave hers away since she is moving out of the country and not bringing the VHSs with her.

Audio sync is rarely a problem if the video capture device captures the audio as well. I can't tell if the above card is doing that cause the specs say there's an audio out to a sound card as well.
