Wow, that is one horrible IP for a MMO.

Turbine. Heh.

That would be so excellent if they indeed made it "not like what most people expect" from an MMO. If it's about killing ten hyppogriphs, HEADS WILL ROLL!

Put it on Wii. Make it for kids / teens. Have the nunchuck work as a wand / weapon. Profit.

I know! Let's take a popular IP and make an MMORPG out of it! I'm such a brilliant businessman!

There's not enough base content in the world to make a morg, but I could see a really classy toontown or hello kitty out of it.  Might be kinda cool to explore Hogwarts.

The lord of the rings movies did really well and it's fantasy so it'll be a sure thing.

Given the inherently creepy nature of Harry Potter fanfiction (moreso than just any fanfic), I shudder to think about the player community on a Harry Potter MMO.

I'm not sure if J.K. Rowling would be down with people running around as death eaters.  I wonder what kind of rights she retains on her IP.

I think that would be the best way to go. Make mini-games based on homework. It'd be interesting to see if they could make homework not only fun, but a fun multi-player experience.

I'm not sure if J.K. Rowling would be down with people running around as death eaters.  I wonder what kind of rights she retains on her IP.

If the movies are any indication, WB owns Harry Potter, but Rowling retained the right to do the books. Something to that effect. It would seem a step back for WB to go to Rowling for permission to do anything with the video game part of the franchise. She is familiar with online gaming, though I doubt she plays WOW.

This could work from some angles.

e.g. Take the AoC platform, retexture it, replace battlekeeps/cities with rival schools of wizardry, replace GMs with headmasters and add FFA PvP mounted on broomsticks and we could have a winner.

Also instead of exploding into blood, enemy players explode into showers of sweets and cake.

Never work since you can't kill the house elves. They're too sad and oppressed.

Arrogant bastard elves that are a joy to kill is the secret to a good MMO.

This could be interesting but will probably suck.

If it does happen I'd predict Quidditch(sp?) as the only PVP. Which could be very fun honestly.

You all lack vision.

I can't wait to take Potions with Professor Snape.  Whilst learning the inherant healing qualities of bogsnapple spit I can quietly let him know, I know what pains he has gone through, the trials of loneliness we share.  I know he is really true to Harry and the memory of his mother, he will see we are kindred spirits.  We'll scheme together and maybe, in the moonlight, dance together....

Worst fanfic ever.

I'm sure there could be more pvp than just Quidditch. They duelled all the time, and got in fights between classes and such.

That Goerge Carlin thing needs to be made into an MMO. It rawks!

It's really not that impossible. I'm no game designer but I can see it working.

The books ended in a very open-ended way that gets Harry out of the picture. So there is room for new stories about other students to take place.

When you are online doing the exciting stuff, that's the things between classes, etc. When you are offline or working or something, that's when your character is in class. After an introduction that explains the UI and play of the game you get to choose your faction in the school and then you can do classic MMO faction work. Quiddich, easy secondary activity. Dueling for sure. All kinds of fantasy material ready to be used for quests...

Then again, I'm no game designer so I could be crazy wrong; but I see a lot more opportunity than an IP like Hello Kitty offers... and yet HKO is already out!

Yeah but there's Hello Kitty everything, so it's normal they'd eventually add an MMO to that pile of merchandise, too...

I think there's plenty of fun to be had in classes too, and even doing homework. If there were to be some kind of quest-based system (which there really shouldn't be, but it's an easy frame of reference) one possible quest could be to drive off a Boggart in Defense Against the Dark Arts, while another could be producing a Polyjuice potion as homework for Potions class.

Those of course could be tutorial missions that the player could skip if he or she wanted. Or the player could forego the after-school adventures and just spend time in classes and homework. Or both. Or neither.

Why would you ever read a fanfiction?

This would be totally cool if you could be a death eater. The game could begin with escaping from Azkaban, and Harry Potter would be a raid boss. You could farm him for his wand and his glasses.

They could put in a Caverns of Time thing so you could kill Potter's parents and Dumbledore.

That would be awesome.
