For anyone wondering, some small dev house made a low budget RPG and stole directly from Oblivion, Morrowind, Diablo, Thief, Spawn, Pirates of the Caribbean, Painkiller and Unreal Tournament. Apparently some dialogue was lifted from Rune too. It's worth it to check out the comparison shots. It's just THAT blatant.

All of the game (apart from initial background story and some character designs) had to be re-written, all the characters had to be created in 3D and animated, all the background scenes re-created, all the sounds, coding and music?..basically everything had to be redone or newly created for the PC version. This is not an old game that has been dressed up. This is the original concept, dusted off and re-created. Talk about getting caught in a lie. How long did this game take to make?

After reading the concept of the game, the lawyer in me said, "it takes place in the Bermuda Triangle! Of course there are elements of other games in it!"
Its not outright stealing, its post-modern video game art.

What's NeoGAF again? Check this thread for lots of comparative screenshots of outright art asset theft. Best guess appears to be they used a utility that can suck the models and texture right out of the video card. --Dave EDIT: An example, Unreal Tournemant in the first, Limbo of the Lost in the second:

But then that still doesn't explain their copying of light sources and particle effects. Seems like they had to go through a good bit of manual look to keep them looking the same lol.

It's just screenshots with a 3D model super-imposed on top of them. Kind of like Grim Fandango, FF7, or the first Resident Evil.

Wow, if that's true, then they really did nothing. Anyone played to confirm?

that's just amazing isn't it. It's like back in grade sch where this classmate of mine is soooo gooood at drawing anime char, then i asked how he did it. He put a semi-transparent paper on his manga n trace with pencil. I wasn't that impressed afterwards.

This is even more insulting than those DeVry commercials.
"Get your free game demos!"
[edit] Caught up a little more on the assets..
Really, shit like this is so bad it even makes ME feel bad and embarassed. Not sure how to explain that, but...

Just pretend it was a hot trampy bartender with issues that developed the game.

Well, they had to wait for the games to come out first to be able to copy them!

I have no clue how hard this kind of thing is but if it could become trivial to create a world with 3d objects you have select at will from other games, it would take modding and homebrew games to a whole new level (ignoring all things ip here). They shouldn't have released this game, they should have released their toolset.

That is so great. I've ripped sprite artwork for some of my Visual Basic games, but I never thought about publishing them!

It's a point n click with static background from my understanding.
"Wintermute Engine Development Kit is a set of tools for creating and running graphical point&click adventure games, both traditional 2D ones and modern 2.5D games (3D characters on 2D backgrounds). The kit includes the runtime interpreter (Wintermute Engine, or WME) and GUI editors for managing and creating the game content (WME tools) as well as the documentation, demonstrational data and prefabricated templates." All the backgrounds they stole are screenshots from other games. They made a 3D character to move (with scaling) on 2D backgrounds.

Nice. They are even more lazy than I expected. And the plan was even more silly than imagined. At least if you ripped the art assests, you have some small plausable deniablity.

I'm actually sorta curious if they thought they were legally using the screen grabs under satire laws and such. From what I understand there is some leniency in terms of what you're legally allowed to do when it comes to satire and copyright, and from what I've seen of the screenshots, (assuming the ones in this article are really from the game) it definitely looks like a satire of some sort. Gentlemen, meet your lawyer. Especially after watching the ending video (arguably a Portal ripoff satire,) the game is some sort of unfunny satire intended for the three guys who made the game.
