I miss UO in its pure sandboxy goodness state. I want to login as a noob, start killing rabbits, and have a tank mage make me explode right before looting my corpse and making a giant yard sale on the street because my stuff isn't even worth keeping. Then I want to watch him cut my corpse into pieces and arrange the parts in inappropriate positions so that when I get back to pick up the empty glass bottles and ruined hides I had been collecting I can feel even more ashamed.  awesome, for real

My question to you is…are there any games out there now or on the horizon that can bring me this same level of joy in overcoming stupid hard odds and returning the favor one day?

I've played EvE, its close, but too impersonal. Any obscure games out there that might qualify?

I think AC Darktide is still running. Since the 500 people still playing are all 250th level +, I'm sure you would have a ganky good time.

I think EVE is probably the closest modern game you'll find to old-time UO.

I think hiring a dominatrix to kick you in the junk and degrade you would be cheaper. And more socially acceptable.

Even I don't want to talk about UO at this point.

Since you  appear to have asked seriously - yes, yes you can. Unfortunately the game is so old now that the graphics make the eyes of anyone under 30 bleed.

When I was a little kid, I remember how excited I was the first time I was able to ride my bike.  I'd love to relive that moment again.

For me, every MMO I've tried since UO has been chasing that experience. Every game since UO has taken me further and further from it. I was just hoping someone might know of a newer game that comes close.

If not, then I'll just keep waiting and hoping.

I guess I am in the minority of players who want their MMO to be dangerous. Sure UO kicked you when you were down and then set you on fire. But slowly you would progress and eventually you were in a position to dish out the pain yourself. I kept a list of names, and tracking those folks down once I had some decent skills and getting revenge was ever so sweet.

Tell me where you live. I'll show up. Rape people you care about, burn your house down, stick a dildo with nails in it up your ass, and laugh as you die in agonizing pain. Good enough?

I really don't see why enjoying the thrill of trying to survive in a dangerous online world in anyway compares to what you just described.

Darkfall is coming

Thanks K9. That's the exact kind of information I was hoping to find with this thread. I'm checking that game out now. I had not heard of it before.

The bottom line is this: All game companies are out to make money. They're going to build games that will attract as many paying customers as possible. Old School UO and AC Darktide were the last commercial games to allow FFA PvP with corpse looting.

AC went retail in 1999. It's not a coincidence that no commercial game since then has had this form of PvP.

simply put, Darkfall is the longest running MMO joke. It won't ever be released.

You want EVE or you could try Face of Mankind if they still have that running.  Sadly its "feature set" was so damn incomplete that it really didn't quite have enough of a world for one to care that it was dangerous.  For real though, eve is impersonal but it may be the last game that even attempts a dangerous game world for all the reasons all the people will post and have posted in this thread.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

People might diasgree with me, but eve is set up so that the longer you play the more you have to win. Its a pyramid scheme. Skill is far far down the list of reason you will win

Theres a famous pirate called Ginger Majician that got himself banned and crowed about how he was the best PVPer in eve. However he tried coming back with a new character and very quickly was desperately trying to buy a better skilled one. he eventually bought a 20 million skill point character but he never got anywhere. Its reported that he had no real idea even how to set up his ship properly with standard equipment. In fact I heard the word "pathetic" used about him.

I hear he also tried to run a guild in POTBS based on his skilled PVP and failed completely there too

Ginger Magician was basically just the first 0.4 gate camper.  He got famous because he was the first to realize that you could sit in a lowsec system on the shortest absolute path between the major market (Yulai at the time) and the bulk of non-Amarr space and gank traders who didn't want to go the extra 20 jumps around through high-sec.  He was never really an elite solo PvP'er like we came to know in 2003-2005.  Then the game population picked up enough that you couldn't PvP solo anymore, no matter how good you were.

Anyway, the problem for new Eve players is that you have to find your fun.  If running missions isn't fun for you, the game does very little to show you the other ways of playing it.  Myself, I quit the tutorial when they asked me to suck rocks.

I suppose that sounded a little too much like the crazy lipstick rifle guy from Billy Madison.

As far as EvE goes, its a very fun game. You are totally right that solo pvp is extremely difficult. I've got a pilot that is dark training right now. He will be in dreads within the next month or so. But even with a high skill point character, its far to difficult to make a ship that can tackle, tank, and dps many different ship types as well as pop them before help can arrive. Then again, maybe I just don't know how to fit my ships for that.

Just do what every other loudmouth pvper does. Wander through low sec in a tech 2 faction fitted monstrosity against guys with 1/3 your skill points who can't even afford most decent t1 gear, or not even have the physical ability to use t2.

Or even just restrict yourself to t2.

Hell, challenge yourself while you are sitting sniping haulers or sitting at a gate firing smartbombs in your stabbed out Dominix
