I was going to suggest XKCD, but I wasn't sure how well it would translate into a physical medium.

Ctrl+Alt+Del is golden most of the time, I personally prefer it to Penny Arcade.

I like www.nuklearpower.com (8 bit theater).  He's already animated his strip though, but, it could give you ideas.

Ctrl+Alt+Del

Oh wait, I thought you said a serious, completely unfunny comic with a writer who thinks he's hot shit but actually hasn't a clue.

Right. Carry on then.

You should sit on your hands if this is some sort of a knee-jerk "HURRRR ITS A FURRY COMIC" sort of thing. VGCats has actually made me laugh a few times, CAD has never. Also the artist of VGCats can sorta draw and isn't a proven piece of human shit. Not that he isn't only batting like 4/200+.

VGCats has its moments.  It misses more than it hits for me, but every now and again it makes me laugh.

CAD is right up down with UserFriendly as some of the worst crap out there.

Something I like a lot is Scary Go Round.  Something about his characters / humor / artstyle tends to just work for me (warning, most recent 2 weeks he's been taking a break and the guest art is pretty bleh).

Hell, his art has actually improved quite a bit over the years (vgcats guy).  That's one thing that I think differentiates the people who are actually trying from those that found their niche and are milking it for as much ad and merchandise revenue as they can get from minimal effort.  Every now and again I see a UserFriendly or CAD or whatnot and it's just as uniformly awful as it was 5+ years ago.  A number of webcomics I enjoy, I flip back to the archives and think "wow, he's come a long way since he started".

I'm willing to forgive really cheestacular art sometimes if somehow the writing massively compensates for it, but in general a webcomic, like any other visual dealie, I sort of want to not be eye-bleedingly-awful.

Beat me to it.  I was just flipping through the archives looking for that one.

http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=200 is also a favorite of mine, but the first FF game I played was FF7, so I am probably broken.

http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=96 does an unbelievable job of explaining the random party experience in FFXI (and, really, many other MMOs).  "My Toes Are Cold" has become a staple among friends I gamed with.

I think part of the problem here is that people assumed I thought CAD was funny. It's not funny. Comics don't have to be funny. Apparently webcomics mostly about gaming HAVE TO BE FUNNEH according to the loud netizens. VGCats _IS_ however supposed to be funny. Now, that Leo Used Poop comic pops up EVERY SINGLE TIME someone says it's not funny, much like the Warhammer stole from WoW PA comic. VGCats however is uniformly unfunny. 3 examples, the latter 2 in the thread not actually being funny, is a pretty bad sample from a 5+ year old webcomic.

Now, if CAD is supposed to be laugh out loud humorous, I missed the joke. I simply assumed otherwise. I throw CAD in with Questionable Content. Not necessarily supposed to be LOLLLLERIFFIC. I might be assuming incorrectly, and that's fine, because it makes them tolerable. VGCats is consistently meh. Also, nearly every single comic (of inconsistant release, fuck he's bad at keeping to ANY sort of schedule) in VGCats needs a tl;dr version. For serious. Except the poop one. Which again, is like the only funny and memorable one.

I certainly don't require that everything be laugh-out-loud funny.  I'm also not going spend time defending vgcats -- it amuses me every now and again, but it certainly misses more than it hits.  CAD just does not impress me.  Taking a quick look, I realize it is not eye-bleedingly-awful like UserFriendly (which features terrible art, terrible writing, and stupid lunix-user/fropen-source-targeted humor).

blah blah webcomics aren't funny
I've heard you bitch for years about wildly popular (penny-arcade, pvponline, vgcats) webcomics not being funny. In fact, I don't think you've ever mentioned a webcomic that you thought was any better than "one funny comic every so often".

VG Cats is worthless piece of shit. I don't get 95% of the strips, hell I don't even have a clue what niche console game author is reffering to. Hell, if PA requires several pages of explanation (according to Kurtz:P), VG Cats would need a tome of Britannica for every strip.

Even the poop comic sucks - the punchline  is so predictable it renders 2/3 of strip redundant.

Also, xkcd really isn't so bad, I promise. My girlfriend really likes Rob + Elliot, but I just don't get it.

If it was possible for an opinion to be empirically wrong, it would be yours about CAD. It's a fucking terrible comic and quite possibly the worst one on the internet (even over the 50,000 sprite comics and Vendetta), it's indefensible. Buckley is the biggest hunk of shit ever to cut and paste his way onto the internet and he deserves his obscurity in the face of everything else on the internet meant to entertain people.

I don't know if it can be expressed in English exactly how wrong it is to find CAD even momentarily amusing.

Edit: Also, while I know that no one on earth honestly reads PVP, go check out the wedding arc he's finishing. It's a wonderful reason why he should have his fingers broken.

Ok, so provide some linkage as to why Buckley is such a piece of shit.  There's a story here and I haven't heard it so now I'm interested.  I know the B^Uckley thing, but this is the first time I've heard reference to him, personally, being a piece of shit.

Woody, on the other hand, over at GU. Yeah, total tool. The more I find out about the guy the less I like him.

Didn't bother me.  Of course, I don't claim to be a hardcore gamer-geek, either.  The comic's moved beyond just being games and is into the characters for their own sake.  Yeah, he should write a different comic but that'd kill his marketing.  Since he makes his living off of it, I can't blame him for not doing that.  (Tho he's never seen a dime from me.)   It's still better than Garfield or Marmaduke or Dennis the Menace or Blondie.  Or, shit, come to think of it, it's better than ANYTHING that gets published in the daily paper that I've seen.  The sole exception being Boondocks, but I don't get to read that anymore because it's Too Black and scared the Cincinnati Enquirer into dropping it.  awesome, for real

The man takes no constructive criticism, and pretty much bans anyone who offers any on his forums. He cribs jokes from other comics which by itself is embarrassing since most webcomics are terrible, but after ripping a few PA strips and getting called out on it says, "I haven't read PA in 2 years." Nah, you haven't read the example of how to make a living off a webcomic in 2 years, my fucking ass.

Oh right, and there's the thing where he sent pictures of his cock to an underaged girl.

http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Tim_Buckley  (NOT WORK SAFE)

Amazingly the ol' encyclopediadramatica is pretty on the spot this time.

I can't even begin to scratch the surface of why the comic itself is terrible. There's a nearly 1250 page topic dedicated to CAD and other shitty comics on Something Awful and CAD dominates most of those pages.

CAD doesn't offend me.  It doesn't make me laugh, either.  It's just the most average, most bland webcomic out there.

Some comics I DO like that aren't as well known:  http://threepanelsoul.com/

No, today's isn't especially funny.  But it usually makes me laugh, and there's a nice variety of art styles.

Also: http://samandfuzzy.com/

This one is a little tough if you start from the beginning, because the first year or so was, well, really bad and had that not so subtle webcomic-about-the-author's-life thing.  However, later on, the art improves dramatically as do the jokes and storylines.

Some good Three Panel Souls:

I'd recommend people new to Sam and Fuzzy start reading at the beginning of the Noosehead Story Arc and read the older stuff afterwards, if they like it.

I'm starting to agree with schild here. 99.9 percent of webcomics are just sad. That said, I really liked Oots, but I doubt I will ever find anything even remotely as fun. Note I said fun. Not funny, although it is funny here and there, its just more about the fun.

Girl Genius is good if you like Steampunk. It's got a story and drama, but the writer is obviously having fun and doesn't take it too seriously.  He knows he's writing a serial comic, not the next great novel.  www.girlgeniusonline.com

LFG is good for the episodes with Richard.  Without him it gets too serious and approaches silly fantasy melodrama as all the other characters are 'serious'.  www.lfgcomic.com

PvP and CAD IMHO can be funny.  They can also be pompous and preachy.  Luckily I don't have to pay money to read either of em, so I can read em, laugh at the funny ones, and ignore the non-funny ones.  And steer well clear of their blogs.

VGCats is very hit and miss.  When he hits, hes fantastic.  The Pacman one ie this one is pure art, albeit one of those melty watch Dali paintings.

XKCD can be good too when they're not talking about maths problems that I just don't understand.  It does make the maths nerd in my office laugh all the time though.
