I remember reading a story about a robot, who can only see in black and white, gets separated from his "family". During his adventure to reunite with them (specifically the boy iirc) he gets new eyes so he can see in color. I misremember the title as "Little Lost Robot", which is the title of an Asimov short story that is vastly different, lolz. I don't remember how old I was when I read it, but it was definitely before I was in high school so it would have to have been written before the mid-80s. Someone on teh internets must be able to help me.

Bolts, A Robot Dog, by Alexander Key?
Only thing I could come up with between faded memories and Google. Came out in '66 though. I remember looking at it 25 or so years ago, but don't remember reading it.

that may be it. I don't remember the robot being a dog, but that fits with it's dog-like behavior (well, what I remember, anyway). Neither the name, author, nor paperback artwork fit though. Do you remember the story? I can't find anything so far after a few min of googling.
edit: by "fit" I mean "match my memory from events that occurred at least 20+ (probably 30+) years ago", heh.

Heh. All I remember was the dog getting separated and having adventures trying to reconnect with the family. This particularly book jumped out at me because of the whole dogs seeing in black & white thing (which I really don't know as true actually, just something I remember hearing growing up). Further Googling has not unearthed anything approaching a synapsus of the book.
