The price is a million times more obscene than the actual statuette.

The man comes out of hiding to comment on a 15 million dollar ejaculate lasso, somehow this seems appropriate.

The artist has a similar statue of a girl playing jump rope with a milk rope attached to her mams.

Here's a vid with an interview about the statues: http://www.moca.org/murakami/#  [Exhibition Tour, Part 1 NSFW]

edit: I like some of his stuff. It's not nearly $15m good, but he has a solid sense of design.

I tough it was 15M yen.  Google confirms it's 15M US - or 1,4 billion yen. Weird.

Interesting.. Bacon's "Triptych", sold for a hefty sum as well.  Following the link to the article about him I learned he painted on unprimed canvas, meaning the paintings will destroy themselves over time.  So someone just bought a $13m piece of art that will go kaput.  How amusing.

Sperm lariat doesn't shock me.  It's all about generating a reaction these days.  With as jaded as the common man has become, things are only going to get more bizarre over time.  I fully expect some jackass to begin taking homeless to his studio, eviscerating them and then tossing paint on it to call it art.

I wish I hadn't realized I wasn't that great an artist and focused on music. I've lamented before that nobody clued me in that art is just a con game to separate rich dumbasses from their money. Lots of money.

What I'd still like to know is why the article was more surprised by the fact that the artist showed up to his own auction than the fact that it's a spikey-hard Toriyama ripoff waving a semen-lasso.  If I had made that sculpture I'd sure as fuck go to the auction and laugh my ass off when someone bought it.

The joke is on you I guess. Those rich dumbasses can resell those pieces when ever they want, with a profit.
In fact, if you have the money, it's cheaper to own an original than a cheap replica.  Most original are easily resalable.

If he donated those 15$ Million to F13 we could have made the best next-gen MMO to date and made huge profit. And donated lots of money to charityfonds, supplied the rebels in Burma with all they need, helped the earthquake victims in China and saved 14 animals we have never heard of. Instead he has a fucking anime statue that cums a whirlwind over his head. The things humans waste money on and somehow it never astonishes me. Human stupidity really has no limits.  Ohhhhh, I see.

Well, I did mean the joke was on me. But I think you meant the rich dumbasses weren't dumbasses. In which case I'd point out there are enough rich dumbasses to go around.

I mean, Andy Warhol? Even the semen lasso is better than the schlock that guy crapped out. It's utter trash I was making in 9th grade art class and sells for millions. Anyone paying millions for a 9th grade art project is a dumbass, even if they can find another dumbass to pay more later.

15m? I'm just going to get it as a recast from Hobbyfan for about thirty bucks. 1/1 scale garage kits... Splendid.

Indeed. Fascinating and disconcerting at the same time. The exhibit made me really examine my personal beliefs in religion and the afterlife. As awesome (literally) as it was for me and my wife, my sister bringing my 6 year old nephew was a questionable decision.  Though it does shed some light on how I was raised for you guys.

Reminds me of the case when Equivalent VIII got vandalised at the Tate. The gallery spent thousands of pounds restoring each brick and when they proudly re-exhibited it the artist commented that they should have saved themselves the hassle and just gone down to a builders yard and bought some replacements.
