So I'm going to be at the torch run in SF tomorrow and also at the other thing involving a particular church/cult on the 12th...

Need sign ideas.  Keep it short and simple so  I dont have to work hard.  I wanted to post this in Politics but I decided Gen Disc would get me more replies.

Wear something pro-China just to piss off the demonstrators.

Or anti-Scientology, since that would be incredibly amusing.

Seriously, and I don't know why people don't do this more often, go to target and buy a fairly decent sized dry erase board with some markers. You can make them up while you are there and not feel in anyway tied to one slogan.

Ok so I didn't have a sign because I had to rush straight from work, but protesting China was pretty sweet.  They never even challenged us by bringing out the torch, because it was so going in the fucking bay.  There were a ton of people, a pretty close to even mix of pro and anti China supporters I'd say, nobody held more then a 60/40 edge and I can't even guess who had the lead.

It was pretty boring marching and shouting shit about China Lies and stop killing people.  But it was cool in retrospect because the only people who took the official torch route were the hardcore free tibet people, which I joined because it looked like they were most likely to see some action.  I also got a cool sticker.

So once we found out they were hiding the torch I took to a solo operation and started fucking with people, which was much more fun.  I would go up to anyone with a chinese flag and go yaaay murder!! or something similar.  Some didn't speak enough english not to cheer with me.  Some were offended/scared but some would stop and yell.  What was too bad is I don't/didn't know fuckall about Tibet.  Honestly, not really something I'm too worried about in the day-to-day.  I'm more of a fuck China for not having freedom of the press and not letting their citizens access the real internet type of guy.

Anyways here are the Chinese arguments I heard:

"Tibet has always been and always will be part of China!"  -  Strange wiki says it was taken over in like the 50's or something?  More educated pro-china people point out that Tibet had slavery before they took it over, in the 50's.

"Would the US let California leave the union!?"  -  Hrm, good point, excepting the US government's relationship to California isn't quite the same as China's to Tibet now is it?

"You've never been to Tibet, you don't know!"  - What?  Is that really an argument?  Apparently it is, I heard this pretty damn often

"The Dhali Lama is a killer"  - For real, heard this one from two sources.  Apparently he's the killer and everything else is lies.

You Lie!

Apparently Amnesty International is lying, in fact the whole MSM in America has it out for China I was told.  We're just demonizing a prosperous asian nation because we're jealous or something.  I tried to point out that there were people from:  Tibet, Burma, Turkmenistan & Vietnam saying China was stealing their land, not to mention the whole Chinese Taipei thing.  I mean, at some point I just have to stop trusting the COUNTRY WITH NO FUCKING FREEDOM OF THE PRESS AMIRITE?

But all in all, it was good times, I shoulder checked a few jackasses who thought they were tough, made these mother fuckers stand down when they shoved one of my Vietnamese friends.  Btw the Vietnamese people were the real fucking badasses of the whole protest, though I'd never heard of the tiny tiny islands they were pissed about.  Also there were like 4 dudes that said they were from that tribe or whatever that the CIA trained.  Seemed believable they looked like kinda warcrazed badasses.

Final Verdict:  Protesting is fun.  But avoid long marches with chants and protesting unopposed.  The best parts are getting in some motherfucker you dont agree with's face and letting him know how it is.   Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

You don't see signs saying "We want a return to a theocracy based caste system with institutionalised serfdom and slavery, and we want it now!"

http://discussions.pbs.org/viewtopic.pbs?t=68073

A very good counter argument to the Independent Tibet cause on that forum. It doesn't tow the party line by any means, no one denies human rights abuse by China, but economically and culturally perhaps Tibet isn't so bad off after all. Points to note, the continuation of the caste system practiced by the Tibetan government in exile, the Dalai Llamas connections to the CIA and Department of State, the impact of westernization over the supposed sinocization and facts and figures regarding Tibet since the Chinese invasion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hmong_people

Since after we pulled out Vietnam, Hmong were more or less having genocide committed against them, we resettled a lot of refugees here in America.  Oddly enough, the biggest population is in Minnesota I believe, there is actually a good hunk who were resettled in Northern California near where I grew up (thus why you will find them in San Francisco).  Nice people, tragedy what happened.

You hear some really fucked up stories.  I was in a high school program for poor kids where we stayed at college dorms in the summer and attended class's/activities.  My roommates dad had fled from Laos after the war.  He had been forcefully drafted into the army and sent around to fight, and finally said fuck it and deserted.  He got to the village just in time to get his family out and hide in the jungle before the death squad arrived, and they managed to sneak into Thailand (though the grandfather died along the way).

One of the head guys in the program was an older Hmong guy who was the nicest old Buddhist Asian guy you could think of.  Really cool guy.  He was fighting in the Secret War as a kid, and after the pull out death squads started wiping out their villages.  So his family/village fled and litterally fought there way across Vietnam and Laos in a running battle all the way to the boarder of Thailand.  Him an AK-47 wielding youth at 13.  He said his parents had to eat his baby brother to survive when food got short.  He laughed and joked that he was just happy they didn't eat him.

Like I said, its not my fight.  I'm against people denying other people self government.  Never seems quite right to me.  Now it may be too late 60 years after the fact to give it back but I support their right to fight for it in principal without reallying worrying about bullshit like did they have <culturally icky things to us> when they were in charge, did they have more money, etc.  They want to run their land their way, someone took it with guns?  Seems fucked up.  Not my fight though so I'll move on.

From that thread I found this reply from someone supporting the fucking TL-to-the-DR guy who is writing the pro-china stuff:

Quote
I feel astonished you did not realized who those exiles and lama were? Why do you insist slavery return to Tibet? I have no clue where you got the information that "China invaded Tibet under force of arms. China denies Tibetans basic freedoms and rights and imprisons, tortures and executes Tibetans without benefit of open trial".

Do not repeat those silly propaganda from liars. Please go to Tibet province in China yourself and see with your own eyes. I promise CCP would not follow you as long as you do not shout "free tibet" on street there, lol.

This is basically what every pro-PRC demonstrator said yesterday once we got into it.  Go to Tibet, you'll see its great!!  Which struck me as pretty fucking funny.  Eventually if I just said stop killing them they would tell me that they never killed them, Tibet was always part of china and tea was served!!!  Basically, fucking whackjobs as far as I can figure.

***

@Teleku:  Thanks for the link+story, the Vietnamese guys were by far the coolest and never stopped chanting even though there was less then two dozen of them.  The actual guys who said they were Hmong or were wearing straight up Vietnam fatigues didn't really say anything but they seemed pretty hardcore.  There was a point at the end when somebody was stepping towards the corner we were on and I saw two people holding back one of those guys and I was glad they were.

***

I don't think the Dalai Lama would approve of shoulder-checking jackasses.

I protest my way, which involves liberal amounts of shoulder-checking of people who see I'm going to stand in their way but dont want to go around.  Except cops.  I'm not that big and/or crazy.

***

Who exactly are these pro-China demonstrators?  You'd think people who came here or were born here would be more likely to take a dim view of the PRC government.

Sadly I think a big chunk of them were just people from China who were proud they were getting the games or maybe even just wanted to see the torch and were handed chinese flags and olympic flags.  I didn't feel good intimidating them so much but it wasn't possible to tell who was a loony pro-PRC person and who was just some family who wanted to see a moment in history.  But also the Chinese Consulates and various Pro-China groups within the US bussed in HELLSA people from all over.  I heard of groups from Sacramento (2hrs away) getting bussed in.  Also the most vocal, dumbest ones were 2X-year old kids who are Chinese who probably don't know dick about actually living in China but wanted to show of their heritage or somesuch crap.  I dealt with so-called "Irish" kids who were like that in HS.  Bunch of fucking idiots who just want something to pin their identity too.  Basically pretty similar to me in terms of demographics, but on the wrong side.

That's the People's Republic of China, which was invented around 100 years ago. They are ostensibly making this claim based on Manchurian dynastic control. Its like the Zionists claiming Palestine based on King David's reign or the National Socialists in Germany claiming Poland et. al. based on the extent of the Prussian Empire... or any one of two billion Balkan land claims. I don't suppose that there is a country in the world that cannot look into its past and find a time where they ruled some bit of land that they don't now. But when you're bigger than the rest of the kids in the playground or the big kids are supporting your claim, it tends to work.
