Exteel is quite a fun game. I regularly do a Thursday lan with a few friends. We need a game to play, so one of my friends said "We should install Shogo: Mobile Armor Division". Not being a fan of that game when it came out, it did remind me that eXteel has released a little while back, and was free. So, i downloaded it (about 450 mb + 80Mb Patch, all in all about a 15 min download on Fiber).

We all logged in (we had Dungeon runners and Tabula rasa accounts before, so it was just a task of adding the game to our NC accounts) and began investigating. The game seems to be a mix of shogo, armored core, a dash of "Arcade" like action wrapped in a pleasing graphic style. Its quite fast paced, and with the help of a "Soft" targeting system, even my friends that are not really good FPS players were able to do well.

There is also Melee, which has an interesting "Cinematic" flow to it. Skills are also available that open up some interesting things like stabbing an opponent in the chest, raising them to the sky on your sword, and shooting them in the face repeatedly with the shotgun in your other hand. The weapon and equipment system seems very flexible, shields, guns, swords, healing devices, rockets, ETC...

One of the more interesting features is the ability to make your own rooms (basically, setting up a server), there is a good number of options here, from death match, to team death match, and "Last stand" match type, including level range allowed and if the server is private or public. Last Stand is kinda like a "mission", with NPC Drones coming in wave after wave. We quickly learned that the act of me bumping up the the difficulty to 3 was a bad idea.  While the AI is somewhat stupid (Seems intentionally so) on difficulty 1, on 3, they become rather mean and in larger numbers.

Anyway, if you haven't checked out this title, you should give it a go. It does have an item shop, but I'm not compelled to buy anything yet, the in game credits give me enough to spend as it is. Even if i did, $1 = 100 "NcCoins" with a lot of items falling under that amount in price. There seems to be no shortage of people playing this as well. The game runs on anything really.

All i can really say is, 5 of us had a BLAST last night.

Exteel is a game that you can have fun with for a while, then never come back. Blowing robots up is fun, but you'll quickly find that is about as deep as it goes.

I am enjoying the competition. Did you play before they added capture the flag? But i do see your point, and i am sure i will reach capacity at some point, but at least i'm not paying for it =)

It has spears you can stab other mechs with. Is that close enough?

I played it for the 12 months of closed beta (including the 5 month break) that Exteel had.

Honestly, I understand your enjoyment of the game. When I first started playing, I would have easily paid RL money in order to equip my mechs up to what I wanted since grinding out games to earn enough credits got old fast (I shudder when I think about having to do another Last Stand run). By the end I'd had it with the use of dual Zeus Persuaders and that Shotguns had been nerfed in damage output while still sucking in accuracy.

In 20+ years of gaming, this is only the second time I've encountered a game in which I've failed a tutorial.

Pass.

Yes. Real drills, not just spears.

I haven't been grinding, just playing. As for nurfs and buffs, i don't pay attention, i live longer that way. The games fun.

And the tutorial, i bet it was the SMG portion right? yeah, its a little hard, but honestly, i skipped it, played the game for a while, and now i am redoing them to get the loot to sell.

What was the first?

Xenosaga II, though that one was arguably my fault. There was one line where they said to attack the tutorial level's final guy from behind. I missed it, and was slowly ground down while I ineffectually beat on him using the conventional tactics I learned earlier in the level.

I downloaded and played through the tutorial.  Seems a bit unbalanced.

Little button on them in the hanger called "Scrap" really means sell back.

IMO, its one of the best balanced competitive games out. You can be competitive regardless of gear set up. Everything has an up and down.

What kind of matches do you like to play?

What is your "Style"? heavy beast, midrange guy, melee, range, fast and quick Etc..?

Really depends on what you like to do i guess, and you can be effective with just the mech they give you.

I have tried a lot of weapons and it looks like SMGs are the only weapon I can kill people with at all.

I keep getting 1-2 shotted in the lowest ranked games I can play.

I am fairly sure "I am doing it wrong"

Awesome avatar, Der Helm.

Okay, based on outdated info: SMGs are the easiest weapons to get around with. Going SMG / SMG means you can keep the firepower going as those weapons head toward overheating (you are switching weapons, right?). If you get the SMG / SMG skill it can give you some free hits for enemies close by once your skill points build up.

Ignore shotguns - they don't have the accuracy to be effective enough.

Rifles are good medium range weapons, but if someone closes the gap you won't be able to hit them. Dual Zeus Persuaders - which have an inertial stun built in them (or did - a lot of players in beta asked for it to be removed) - are probably the most popular rifles.

Cannons can work very well if you can keep at range and lock on. Rockets don't lock on, but work well as a fire-in-the general-direction weapon. They can also be just as nasty at close range if you are accurate with them (but it's still better to have some close range weapons to switch to).

Ignore melee. It's a mug's game.

The most important thing in Exteel is to keep moving. Use cover to stop opponents getting a lock on. Also, when it comes to building your mech, it was generally better to buy in separate parts than to buy a 'full' mech all at once, so you'd get a 'heavy' head and arms and a 'light' body and legs. Or something like that. I'm sure the official boards have some guides posted up somewhere.

Thanks a lot.

Now, if someone could point me in the direction of some decent SMGs ?

My advice to is notice what kills you and use those.  I noticed it was the guns you get with NC points and promptly uninstalled.

He. You got a point there.

I would not say that they are THAT overpowered. Am I wrong ?

There was a thread on the official forums that talked about what weapons were best. A lot of the NCcoins guns were mentioned, but it isn't unanimously seen that those guns are automatically the best.

Starting off, Tommy Strikers and Planet Eagles (?) will probably do until you decide to make a change or not. Beam Spitters were also popular when I played; things may have changed.

If you looked, while some the NC coin stuff has higher damage, all the weapons have a very short heat tolerance. And the best items in the game (by a small margin, everything with drawbacks) are in game credit items.

Don't approach this game like its Wow, gear doesn't matter all that much.

Every single item in the game has upsides and downsides, and most increases in power ETC.. are Tiny, and you should NEVER just look at damage in a game like this.
