Have you seen the movie, Murgos? Its a bit more complex than that. The emphasis is on the soldiers NOT honored by their own military and political leaders.
Also, one should also see Letters from Iwo Jima as its sister film.

No, that they raised two flags. The guys who raised the first one weren't memorialized. The guys who raised the 2nd one were in the photo and had no part in taking the hill, unlike the stories that get told about it. But hey, go on being a dick it's worked for you so far.
Who cares? Some guys went and raised a flag in the middle of a battle. Half the people pictured didn't make it off the island. It's an event worthy of respect without any extra embellishment or after-the-fact analyzing. Edit: That they did it twice, the second time with a larger flag, is irrelevant. The photographer happened to be at the second one so a picture got taken of that. Should the first flag raising be honored too? Absolutely, but that doesn't make the second one worth any less. |
