The overcomplicated hat-putting on gif from earlier is from Damien Walters' parkour showreel.

I wasn't going to get involved with the gif-discussion, but you see it was played the right way because of the way his t-shirt moved.

Having said that, I am filled with awe with people who have the kind of physical control Damien Walters has.

While the axe is great, it's not really a good pic without a Menhir.

Great optical illusion there for the few seconds it takes before you make sense of what is really happening.

Apparently. The shadow gives the illusion that she's standing on a floating platform. If somebody flattened down the sand along the edge of the platform the illusion would be even stronger.

Sorry, I saw a flag shadow straight away, so my brain just accepted that.

A series of awesome pics.  The arty picture alone awes me for the price of the lens that had to have frozen each of those rocks in place so perfectly.

Not sure you need an expensive lens for that, just lots of light and a quick shutter. I think you'll be able to replicate that pretty handily with a lens like f.ex the sigma 30mm f/1.4 I've got, which cost me 3.5k NOK or so. I'm not sure you even need to go that far up on aperture due to the amount of sunlight you get down there.

To me that looks like a photoshop.  The cannon is too black-and-white and looks like it was cut out of a b/w WW2 photo, the trooper on the right seems to be standing on the roof of a Humvee due to that antenna, the cannon isn't billowing smoke or fire out (it's just been fired), and the guy on the left sitting and relaxing during all the commotion is just too ridiculous.

You mean, kind of like this?

From what I've seen, the gases don't really go in the direction of the slug, but mostly sideways, and I'm pretty sure the guy just sitting there is just relaxing because it's part of his job, i.e. it's not the first slug they've fired that he's witnessed.

That's a pretty fast shutter if it can capture the slug in mid air like that.

I'd imagine we're talking about the high thousands of a second, aye, or quicker. I've honestly no idea, but you can see there's some motion blur, and the noise looks like a high iso noise.

Fast lens, high ISO, bright conditions, you'll easily get to 1/4000th or 1/8000th of a second.

The one tgr posted is ISO 800, f4, 1/8000 sec on a Nikon D2X at a focal length of 17mm.

K9's has no EXIF but is probably similar. It's been processed some too - I'm guessing noise reduction and local contrast & sharpening. Wide angle lenses have good apparent depth of field at wide apertures so you can shoot fast without too much lens blur.

Looks to be a training session, probably of the Afghan Army, and the guy sitting on the stool is the evaluator/examiner (the guys in US uniforms standing around would be instructors).  He not only wouldn't move from that spot, he probably wouldn't say a word.
