2/10 WOULD NOT INGEST

There are two broad types of games for the Nintendo DS: those that use the stylus and those that do not.  Some people refer to these categories more simply as "good" and "bad".  Rocket Slime is a good game.

This game is a sequel to Slime Mori Mori, and furthermore it is an outsourced sequel.  It's ok, since the outsourced company is Tose, which is the Gandalf to Obsidian's Sauruman, or perhaps the Cary Grant to Obsidian's Larry Fine.  What you have here is a quality collect'em-all game with a not-annoying combat mechanic, plus tank battles with an attack/counter system and a good dose of humor.

The localization is good, and fairly different from the original as far as names go so as to make the jokes fit together well.  I'll start you off: the slime town of Boingburg is attacked by the Plob, which is run by Don Clawleone.  He is the Plobfather of the Plob.  I'll wait for you to slap your knee.

Jokes and flavor aside, the gameplay is solid.  You play as Rocket and have to save all one hundred slimes that were slimenapped in a top-down map.  You have the option of hitting enemies three times to have them explode into money, or you can toss them onto the Trans-Slimenian Railway and have them sent back to town.  Boss battles are between your Schleiman Tank and another enemy tank, such as the Chrono Twigger which looks like a tree.  Send thirty enemies back to town and they will work for you as crew in your tank, once you unlock that bit.

You find various items in slime-mode, such as empty chests once you take whatever was inside.  Send these to town and you can -- or should -- use them as ammunition in your tank.  Tanks have two cannons that will shoot anything you toss into them, including your crew and yourself.  The attacks can be countered since ammunition collides while in flight, and the different items have different characteristics which later on will have you carefully considering what you toss into which cannon.  Lastly, you will eventually unlock alchemy (and some DQVIII references), after which you will have your work cut out for you when it comes to collecting items.

Overall this game is a fun distraction to people that like 2D platformers or collection-based games, and the tank combat is really above-par for what you would expect for such a game.  Also it's funny, or at least punny.
