Hi,

If you have ever played in a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) or even just have an interest in them, it would be greatly appreciated if you took 5 - 10 minutes to fill out the Beholder's MMOG positioning survey located at:

http://www.thebeholder.org/position.htm

This research intends to show the relative associations that players and observers have for a number of MMOGs in today's market have with various attributes and with each other. By collecting the perceptions of players / observers, it is possible to determine what position and attributes each MMOG holds in today's market.

This research is being done purely out of personal interest and all results will be made publicly available once analysis is complete.

If you have any queries or technical problems with this survey, please contact me at research@thebeholder.org.

Thanks for your time,

Unsub, you (very obviously) left off FFXI. You're going to get some skewed results on that "other" category.

I'll fill it out, but damn did you leave out some big players.  You've got M59, but no AC1?

Done. I'll be interested to see what kind of results you get. Perhaps future surveys can include more MMOGs, although there are quite a lot of them these days.

I realize the survey is probably only going to go to those people who seek out sites such as F13 for their extra-curricular gaming activities. However, I agree not enough games are covered to achieve the stated goals.

I would recommend at least covering all games Sir Bruce's chart project covers. There might be some learnings available there, particularly in the Perception vs Success vs Reality sub areas.

I agree. At least AC should have been on there too. My guess is that it has more subs than Shadowbane, M59, or Horizons.

Anyways, it seems like I was highly favorable towards Eve, CoH, and Shadowbane. Ideas from those three would make a pretty great game IMO.

I went through it and answered it to the best of my ability. I'm still a bit of  a n00b for MMORPGs so I couldn't answer everything. But I think this is a good first version of your survey, and subsequent versions will include a lot of what people are suggesting if you so desire.

Is this for a class for something with a broader appeal?

Asheron's Call wasn't included, which is strange because there are much smaller games in that survey.  Asheron's Call would have got many positive checks from me that the other games couldn't get (like regular content updates).

ANother problem is that some of these games (like Ultima Online) have changed drastically over the years.  What I found to extremely fun and engaging, and a HUGE value for the cost at one time, I no longer do because the game has changed to something I hate.

I filled it out, but I've only played two mmorpgs (not counting a little bit of time in the wow beta) in the past 12 months, and one of them (ffxi) wasn't on the list.

Not sure what they were thinking either not including other games (AC1, AC2, L2, FFXI).  AC1 definitely would have been my choice for quite a few of those answers.

I'm sure the results will be availble to any company that wants to pay for them.

I feel dirty after taking that survey.  CoH scored the absolute best, yet I had to click EverQuest as the game for me.

Addiction rears its ugly head.   Is there a Betty Ford Clinic equivalent for MMOGers?

A big thanks to everyone who filled it out.

Results will be available to everyone for free. I'm doing this because I'm interested in the results.

As for the games I missed - AC was a big omission. Can't believe I forgot that. I tried to pick a number of games that covered the range of mmogs without becoming too perscriptive (or else how many of you would have filled out a survey with 30 columns?). But the next version will have a slightly different look... if there is a next one. I'll wait and see what happens with this one.

I abstain to vote without FFXI on there.
