From the bottom of the chart...

I'm fairly certain that all the PS3 models have HDMI support.  On account of the whole BluRay player thing.

I was in Best Buy the other day, and was looking at the 40gb and the 80gb, only the 80gb stated on the box that it had HDMI output.

Wouldn't surprise me if the 40gb didn't have an HDMI port. That would be a Sony bullshit hardware move made even more infuriating by a $69 upscaling DVD player made by Sony has an HDMI out. Cheap bastards.

But as to the original question. Get one. Get it with BC, software or hardware. From the looks of the product matrix, it seems that software BC is the approach they are taking from here on out.

Heartbreak

Oddly enough, the first TRU I called only didn't have the 20GB model (but still had some 60GB @ $500). The other five were no-go's on either of the older models (and I wasn't going to go through all 16 stores within 25 miles in one sitting). Pre-Disgaea 3 though, I think a fire-sale on the last of the hardware-BC systems is about the only thing to get me excited about one, especially without an HDTV in the house.

Also, I'm not sure who's hold music I hate more: TRU or Zune Tech Support ACK!.

They all HAVE to have HDMI for Blu-Ray.

Though including a shiny BluRay movie as part of the package but having the system have no HDMI would be somewhat amusing.

When you buy a ps3, you get 5 free blu-ray movies (by rebate type thing).

I think this applies to ALL Blue-ray players however.

Most of them suck, though I did get to see American Psycho this way so it was all good. I believe HD-DVD is now doing the same thing.

True.  Though several of the choices are close to the giant douche vs. turd sandwich variety last I looked.  Not that I got to choose any, as the person who volunteered to hold the receipt and such promptly lost it the next day.   Sad Panda

The 40 GB models include Spiderman 3 in the box though.  I kinda wish the 80 GB model had, I'm not much of a driving game fan, so Motorstorm doesn't excite me much.

That $300 blowout is sweet. I need to get my taxes done STAT.

At the very least, I am getting a new TV with my tax money. MY 26 year old TV is just begging to be put down, so I'll need some sort of HDTV between $300-600.

Only if you can actually find one.  I'd snap up a $300 20GB if there were any in the area.  Unfortunately there are not.

Holy shit at Civ Revolution!

This game looks fucking HOT, and supposedly has over 500k weapons in it. (All Procedurally generated).

Quote
"The coolest thing about games like World of Warcraft is leveling up your character and then going to up to band of weaker players and totally destroying them," he says. The game allows for up to four player co-op that allows new players to enter and leave on the fly. Also, it's possible to play with characters of different levels in co-op and even level-up your own characters in co-op. Not only will this sort of leveling up change the playing field in Borderlands, but guns. Lots and lots of guns.Borderlands features an in-house Gearbox created weapons sequencer that can produce up to a half a million different weapons — all with different names, appearance, properties. "Imagine any cool weapon you've ever wanted in a game," Pitchford says. "Borderlands has it." The sequencing means that players will most likely never see the same weapon twice. Ever. Gearbox doesn't seem concerned about the possibility of there being one single weapon that is more powerful than anything else in the game. "If there's a gun that can break the game, why would we limit that?" he says. Do you think there is a gun that can break the game? "I don't know," he says. "I guess we'll find out." Gearbox doesn't care either way. Or maybe, it just cares too much.

There's a Dragonball Z game in there.  Looks like Haemish will have to get a PS3 now.

So it looks like the main difference from the 40gb and 80gb is 40gb hard drive space and backwards compatibility. Correct?

From the 60GB system (which has both Wi-Fi and hardware BC):

20GB = no Wi-Fi
40GB = no BC
80GB = software BC

HDD space is basically irrelevant because of how easy it is to change (and it doesn't void your warranty to upgrade the HDD).

I have a question.  It is relevant to my decision whether or not to get a PS3.

Will my XBox/PC USB Guitar Hero controllers work with Guitar Hero games on the PS3?  Like, say, if I get Guitar Hero 1 and 2 for the PS2?  Because I'd like to be able to play the old Guitar Hero games that didn't come out for PC, but the controllers are so overpriced that I'm still conflicted about my decision to buy the 2 I already have.

I'm not planning on getting Rock Band, so no loss there, but it would be nice if the controllers were at least compatible between different versions of the same game.   Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I'm going to GUESS no, as the two games are looking for different buttons that each system has. But i don't know.

Jay said that all USB guitars will work for the PC/MAC edition, and rodth said that the PS3 Les Paul will use a USB dongle for wireless, so there's a good chance the PS3 Les Paul will work with the PC/MAC edition.

Well, the only way that the old controllers work with the PS3 is through a PS2 -> PS3 controller converter, so I don't know if it'll do much of anything with something plugged in the USB slots.

To be honest though, my brain hurts from reading that chart. The fact that we need so many damn charts more so.

This goes to reinforce my view that consoles suck.   awesome, for real

Even in PC land where all the OSes hate each other, you can plug your Dell keyboard into an iMac and have it work.  I've been spoiled.
