For XP users be careful when installing the new graphics update patch as it is deleting some peoples boot.ini file (bad news) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022/ tells you how to make a new one basically if yours is already gone. Looks like a two stage mistake: Someone doing the patch script mistyped and hit the root boot.ini, instead of the one in the EVE directory. Some fucking idiot named an EVE file after a critical system file.

yeah but there's probably some people out there wondering why the hell their computer wont boot up anyways. Also it's not happening to everybody, I know my boot.ini appears to be fine.

What's even better is that this was REPORTED in the test, and ignored.
It effects XP machines with Eve in the same partition as the windows directory.
CRS had the same thing happen with WW2OL on once, but CCP really ort to be above that level.
I also think someone's head should roll for this, and furthermore will place 1mil ISk on that no one will, and CCP will say "honest mistake folks, sorry about that Chief".

FROM MAIN PAGE:
ALERT: READ THIS IF YOU INSTALLED TRINITY BEFORE 4 A.M. GMT
If you have Windows AND upgraded EVE Online: Trinity Classic before 4 A.M. GMT to Premium using the content upgrade path then you MUST read this before doing anything else.
PLEASE DO NOT REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER Check the root directory of your hard drive and see if you have a boot.ini file. Boot.ini file is normally hidden so you need to click Tools : Folder Options : View and select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" to be able to see it. You can also check for the presence of this file by clicking Start : Control Panel : System : Advanced : Startup and Recovery : Settings (third button down). Windows will alert you if the boot.ini file is missing. If boot.ini is still there then you are not affected and do not have to take any further steps. If boot.ini is NOT there then please click here: FORUM LINK We have removed the faulty updater so anyone installing the Trinity Expansion now will not be effected.
A new updater will be available shortly.
We apologize profusely for this error and are working on offering more extensive help those that have a non-working Windows PC, so please stay tuned.

That's fucking outrageous. I don't understand how you guys can still play this game with all the corruption and incompetence in CCP.

How about because I can't think of an online game that I've ever had as much fun in as Eve, along with the fact that normal people don't fall apart into a heap of crying goo over post-patch goat screws? TBH, for a patch of this magnitude it went far smoother than I thought it would.

Smoother than you thought it would??? What the fuck did you think it would do then, cause your monitor to explode leaving you to pick the glass out of your face? That some guys would come over and kick your teeth in after patching? People can't even boot up and you think it went smoothly, hot damn you have some low fucking expectations. Jesus.

Good thing I have EVE installed on my E: drive. As a developer I laughed myself silly at the sheer stupidity of that error. Who the hell names any file the same as a critical system file?

This. I vaguely recall that when all this new sh*t was being discussed that XP wasn't even going to be supported at all. That got quashed right quick, but I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't any XP machines at CCP.

I'm sorry but any patch that results in people not being able to start their fucking computers falls into the realm of clownshoes incompetence. It's not taking '30 seconds' to fix the problem for the people who had already shut down their computers for the night before the issue was publicized. Relatively savvy people will be able to get their computers up and running again with no data loss with some research and effort, but there are a lot of non-savvy people out there. A fuckup of this magnitude is really inexcusable.

Right. My point was that if it were doing it on a huge magnitude, I'm sure the server wouldn't be hosting 20K people. Either way, it is inexcusable and there's not a fucking thing CCP can do outside of tell people not to reboot and pull the patch. Which they did.

It effects XP machines with Eve in the same partition as the windows directory. Oh, nevermind then. That's a configuration people rarely see.

Just got this in an email from them. Dear customer
Some users may have been inadvertently affected by an error in the install scripts for the Premium Graphics Upgrade process for the new Trinity Expansion.
Only those who meet ALL of the following criteria need to take further steps:
You started downloading the upgrade from Trinity Classic Graphics Content to Premium Graphics Content BEFORE 04:00 GMT on Dec 6 You must be using a version of Windows other than Vista. You must have Windows installed not on the primary partition. or You must have at least 2 hard disks and the OS must be installed NOT on the primary, but the secondary hard disk If all these apply, you MAY be affected by a known problem with the Graphics Update system. All other users are unaffected by this issue. The Trinity update (including Premium Graphics Content) is now available for all users and this error has been corrected.
It looks like the bug is a bit less common that we thought. Still, from what I've heard it was reported during the beta and didn't get fixed. That's the same kind of bullshit that used to happen back in the Doctor Twister days of UO. These companies just never seem to learn.

A user made a one line reply in the TQ forum to an unrelated topic about a possible boot.ini problem on Sisi. No bug report was filed nor was anything in the test forum. The fact that this bug made it live is not a case of CCP willfully ignoring the bugs users tell them about.

How do you fix it in 30 seconds if you don't have windows install CD (XP came preinstalled with your computer) and only one PC in your house? Right. My point was that if it were doing it on a huge magnitude, I'm sure the server wouldn't be hosting 20K people. Either way, it is inexcusable and there's not a fucking thing CCP can do outside of tell people not to reboot and pull the patch. Which they did.
Ekhm, just 25k people in the bloody evening, day after most advertised and sought for expansion ever? On a weekend day that normally sees around 35k people on?
