Writer's summary: An investigative report by Radar Magazine catches up with Marc Collins-Rector, who is walking rakishly free in London...and his protege Brock Pierce, whose giant company IGE -- which buys and sells cash in "World Of Warcraft" and other games -- is winning rave write-ups in Fortune and other magazines. In our long investigation, we discovered strong evidence that Collins-Rector -- who is hiding his money from child abuse victims -- may have helped fund IGE. Radar article: click hereIt starts off by repeating (pretty much plagiarising) stuff that is already known. But then it goes further after research and interviews of their own. They have also dug up the laughable Chad's World pilot to add to the old *NSFW* Flash video *NSFW*. There is good reason to believe, however, that Collins-Rector also has a stake in the company. Daniel Cheren, a lawyer who represented three of the boys in their civil suits, openly voices his suspicions about Collins-Rector's involvement, and suggests that money from the new venture should go to the victims. Among other indications, when IGE first surfaced, it listed an address in Marbella, Spain, the town where the trio hid out. Paperwork for the company's incorporation in the United States was filed by Matt Rector, Collins-Rector's brother, along with Collins-Rector's former business partner, attorney Randy Maslow—then IGE's executive vice president.
The company is under no legal obligation to publicly disclose its finances or investors, and the bulk of its operations remain in Hong Kong. Without a court order obliging IGE to open its books, it's impossible to know whether Collins-Rector is in on the action. The company didn't return calls seeking comment.

This pedophile stuff is old as hell. As is the Collins-Rector link. We're talking 2003-4 old.

Good article, but it just summarized what we already knew. There's no proof, and even if we could get them shut down, someone else will just give the market what it wants. The profits wouldn't go to a child molester (which is certainly an improvement) but RMT is here to stay.

There was some sort of thing I read about this. It was either a long webcomic, or (I think) a you-tube-type animated video.
I'd look it up, but I can't remember much about it.

I said in my post, the article repeats what we already know, then adds some new stuff. I have never seen anyone actually demonstrate a link between Collins-Rector and IGE, rather than between Collins-Rector and Brock Pierce. These guys actually talked to the lawyers in the case against the DEN trio, who want money from IGE. The other bits new to me were The Sun spotting Collins-Rector living a lifestyle consistent with wealth from IGE, and the interview with his former security guard. Whatever the case, this got a fair bit of publicity via boingboing, and every single one of the comments underneath showed it was all new to most people. And I added money laundering for you in the boingboing comments, Schild :)

I believe you are thinking of the fuckedcompany DEN flash animation, which I linked in the first post. It's about DEN, not IGE. READ THIS BIT BECAUSE YOU'RE APPARENTLY NOT ACTUALLY READING ANYTHING ELSE: The purpose of this thread is not to repeat "IGE people are linked to paedophiles". I'm the person who posted all that before. The reason I started this new thread is that the article directly links Collins-Rector to the founding documents of IGE, rather than linking Pierce to Collins-Rector via DEN. Those are two different things. AND THIS BIT - SORRY I KNOW IT'S TAXING: Linking Pierce to Collins-Rector and their past just provides an opportunity for innuendo. Whereas linking Collins-Rector to founding IGE, makes IGE vulnerable to the law.

Good to see that, as well as maintaining your previous quality of posting, the Second Coming of Geldon also has a nice, healthy sense of proportion.

My wife and I recently bought a house and were trying to look up offenders... the map pretty much looked like the one above. The problem, we later found out, was that if some 19 year old dude has a 15 year old Gfriend... and her parents get pissed... he gets registered for life. Flash forward 20 years later and here he is, married, 3 kids, working a good job and he's in the database. It's just stupid that they classify those types of people in the same way they do when some 40 year old is picking up toddlers on the playground.

I live in Tampa, and let me tell you, most of ours are NOT that. Most of them are assault under nine. It's pretty fucked up.

Good to see that, as well as maintaining your previous quality of posting, the Second Coming of Geldon also has a nice, healthy sense of proportion. Not really. I hate cheating in online games to an unreasonable degree. Not too long ago I was condoning severing the hands of those who keep exploits to themselves on the CoH boards. At the very least, I would work to make it a felony carrying a $10,000 fine. I'm completely fine if you're cheating on your own in a single player game, but when you start mucking up my online space, it's personal.

Which is why making such registers public is just a bad idea.

I fail to see how your response disagrees with my suggestion that, in likening buying virtual gold in imaginary games to the abuse of children, you are maintaining an impressive and consistent track record of startling idiocy.

There's really nothing to say to the typical forumite that misconstrues what you're saying and attempts to make a big deal out of it. However, it's late, and what little sense I had has fled with the daylight.

It's not being misconstrued when it's plainly what you fucking said. And nobody's making a big deal out of it, they're just making the usual "geldon is being a dipshit again" observation. Just stop being a fucking tool.
At least when I get everyone to hate me, it's mainly because I'm doing it on purpose. Christ.

No, Geldon is quite right. I did once pay ten dollars to Something Awful and that does, let's face it, disqualify me from passing comment on people who say things like "Cheating in online games. Pedophilia. Either way, I'd like to gouge their eyes out with a spoon." Clearly, I misunderstood the subtler, more reasonable point that Geldon was making when he said "Cheating in online games. Pedophilia. Either way, I'd like to gouge their eyes out with a spoon", and I was wrong to suggest that saying "Cheating in online games. Pedophilia. Either way, I'd like to gouge their eyes out with a spoon" in any way suggested that Geldon thought the two crimes were in any way comparable. Personally, I would have gone with a vicious 'So's your face' riposte there.

Okay, in order to preserve my glowing reputation, I'll explain it was a deliberate exaggeration intended to shock in terms of how much I dislike RMT in games. Even if it wasn't, the comparison really isn't there. Just because I'm expressing extreme dislike to either offender (hence my desire to gouge their eyes out with spoons) does not mean the reasons are the same. Your taste is not that great, so stop feigning superiority in all things message board related.

The RMT industry works something like this (using fictional names because I can't be bothered looking up the real ones, which have generic names like RPG Ventures).
IGE is owned by Virtucon, which was set up by the founders of IGE and sold to Acme, which owns half of Cyberdyne Systems (which has the IGE founders on its board) and all of Allakhazam. The other half of Cyberdyne is owned by Initech, whose most active director is Adelai Niska.
Niska was initially managing director of Virtucon, but resigned to concentrate on Initech and Cyberdyne.
To avoid funding paedophiles, you buy your gold from Chang's Friendly Farmstore, a shopfront that buys its gold from Cloverleaf Industries (which buys it wholesale from farmer groups to resell at a mark-up), a subsidiary of Blue Ant, whose parent company is listed as Tyrell Corporation, an Initech shelf company. Tyrell Corp is also officially the owner of Thottbot and Wowhead.
IGE as Acme with a convoluted structure is still IGE.

When designing their RMT payment system, somebody probably told IGE to employ a nonce, and they got confused between the use of the term in a cryptographic sense and the British prison vernacular. Easy mistake to make.
