I assumed putting Dances with Wolves alongside Avatar was the joke.

Ah....I haven't actually seen Avatar, but I've heard the comparisons.

Actually now, people are less likely to have seen dances with wolves which to be honest kind of sucked.

Eh, I actually like the movie.

No, I do not pretend to have actual taste in films.

I feel like the obvious movie to compare Avatar to is Fern Gully.

I thought it was pocohontas that Avatar mimicked.  Now Dances with Wolves and Fern Gully too?  Not that I can't see the obvious parallels, but did people bitch this much about the similarity of the other three movies before Avatar was made?  Or do you need to reach a mass appeal level before it's cool to make scathing comparisons?  And at what point can I put on a beret, go to some anti-establishment poetry night and complain about how Avatar is just a tool of corporate pig dogs to keep me and feminists down in the mud?

Just be glad it didn't win the "Movie of the year" award.  The rage would have been endless.

Not saying avatar should have won but the hurt locker was over dramatized oscar-bait that will be forgotten about completely in a couple years.  It's not even going to be a trivia question, it's that forgettable.

Just wondering were Pocahantos, Dances With Wolves and Ferngully really that good that people should be defending their IP? I have only seen one of them and I vaguely remember it being really boring (Dances with Wolves).

Here have a photo I took in a pub while on a trip to Kerry recently.

Male introduced to foreign culture wins the heart of a notable female, oftentimes "royalty", and decides his own culture isn't as good as the foreign one.

Fern Gully is unique in that Zack didn't actually stay with the fairies (which would have been impossible), which is at least something a little different.

Richard Cobbett summed this up.  The Academy voting pool is dominated by actors, and Avatar is a two-hour infomercial telling them: You can be replaced by a Playstation 3.  Same reason the guy who played Gollum/Smeagol never had a chance of winning Best Supporting Actor.

But he should have.  He put a fuckload of work into the Gollum character.  The fact that it was then rendered in CGI should have ADDED to his achievement, not taken away from it.

It did in my eyes.

Especially considering the fact that Gollum seemed more real than some of the other characters in the movies. You totally forget that it's a CGI character which is quite an achivement
