You know, just because, I went and flipped through the international building code section on stairs (since I'm excessively familiar with it), and I couldn't find a requirement that the finish needs to be consistent on all treads of a given flight of stairs. As long as the carpet doesn't make the height between steps vary too much that might actually be legal. Truly evil.

That said, there is no requirement for differentiation of finishes in either, Sam is correct. However, all codes and authorities give final call to the inspector, who was the real problem here.

It is not that uncommon to see the bottom tread on a main staircase be wood while the rest are carpeted with a runner like that. The thing that is unique about that picture is that apparently they matched the grain/finish with the flooring well enough that it looks like there is no step there.

Makes no sense as to why he would want to go back and get a piece of paper with his name on it from a school after you accomplished that sorted thing in your life. What could that possibly do for your career especially in that business? Now if he went for a different degree I could see... but why the area you have already reached critical acclaim in?
