Even funnier, it was spam.

Spelling errors about, this is the best. Worlf of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King BETA Client.

So, don't follow the instructions in an email about the Worlf of Warcraft beta.

I've seen that float around a few times, links to an 'official' looking "Beta Login page" or some nonsense.

We all know how that story ends I think.

It's an account grab by one of the gold farming sites.  They've been doing this kind of stuff again recently, then logging-in to the accounts, transferring any 'good' characters to the server they need gold on and DEing the items/ mailing all the cash off.  Two guys in my guild got hit in the last week.  I laughed at them mightily (although both of them tried to blame it on an add-on.)

It's an account phishing scam run by gold-farmers pretending to be the WotLK beta, and two of Merusk's guildmates fell for it (but they're trying to blame it on a dodgy add-on).

Yeah that.

Don't type when tired, kids.  (The add-on they're blaming it on is Omen.)

Ok.  In fairness though, I was 'what'ing the entire thread.

But you explained that too.

HEY, a guy in my guild had all his gold stolen, got Blizzard to replace it, changed his PW..and the farmers logged him on and stole it again!

He blamed it on a keylogger he supposedly picked up from an addon..maybe he was just stupid enough to fall for that phish.

The strange thing about this is that an addon is not really able to do what these people are saying.  If I missed something someone please point me to an explanation of how they exploit it.

As far as I know, an addon cannot write to disk (except in a special section of the WoW config to save your values), it can't connect to anywhere on the network, including the Internet, it can't access memory except what it's alloted in its sandbox.. in short, it can't really do jack.

Now, third party full-on programs (like the ACE updater) are another matter.  But an addon by itself can't compromise your information.  In fact I'd be amazed if it even has access to your password.

Witty banter not included.

An LUA addon cannot access your password. However, plenty of people seem to be happy enough to install things such as WoWreader and download these programs from any manner of dodgy sites. I would imagine that a well constructed website and 'update' for one of these programs could backdoor a few thousand people with ease.

About the only hole in the wow addons I can see is that they can join chat channels on a server on their own. As you said though, they don't run until the password for your account has been entered and you log in a character so there's not much they can log that is useful, but if they did somehow manage to get sensitive data it wouldn't be that hard for them to pass it on.

I suspect most of these folks are downloading add-ons from other than official sites.  The two guys in my guild who got hit also used Cosmos extensively, but still insist that because it happened after they installed Omen, it's omen's fault.  They can't recall  where they downloaded Omen from, as they just googled it, and don't know if it was WoWACE or not.

I had a dream last night that Blizzard had released Wrath of the Lich King this morning, out of the blue, and were giving a free month to all old subscribers so they could check it out. It had reactivated some part of the client I hadn't managed to fully uninstall and was trying to download the whole game using its crappy bittorrent application and I was receiving every patch note ever. There was no way to close the download and it was somehow stopping me from restarting or shutting down my computer.

I kept trying to do other things like check my favorite message boards and windows kept opening full of patch notes. I couldn't close them until I scrolled to the bottom (like the EULAs), and by the time I'd done so another had opened.

Ad Nauseum.

I woke up and started laughing.
