Probably based on Blizzard's general unwillingness to tolerate crap under the Warcraft name.

As long as the folks who make the Blizzard games have any say at all on the movie. This is not a foregone conclusion going by the history of licensing. But yes, if anyone has the chance to force a good movie no strength-of-IP alone, it's Blizzard.

I don't think even Blizzard could deal with what they'd find in Hollywood. They'd have the best of intentions, sure, but they'd be a long way from Blizzard HQ and there'd be so many promises to fix the flaws "in post".

Also, I'm not going to go point for point with DraconianOne over Harry Potter; suffice to say I think my point stands because I find the source material as weak as dishwater. IMO, YMMV, etc etc.

Fair enough.  To be honest, I find the source material to be awful as well but I actually enjoy the films (at least from 3 onwards) because they cut the crap and got straight to the business in hand.

This is an interesting point.  It'll largely depend on how the film gets financed.  If Blizzard use any of the wealth that I suspect they've accumulated from 8 million players paying a monthly fee for a couple of years then they may well be able to finance most of it themselves.  They've already done a good thing by getting on board with Legendary Pictures who so far have produced Batman Begins, Superman Returns and 300 (also The Lady In The Water but we'll overlook that) and who've got The Dark Knight and 10,000BC in the next year to look forward to.  They're capable of raising budgets needed for a project like this and making films that sell.  Distribution is a given with Warner Bros. (which used to be a curse but they've turned a corner in the last 10 years).

I don't mean to imply that it's definitely not going to be a trainwreck but the way Blizzard are approaching it at the moment suggests that they're treading carefully.

Good lord. Do you honestly not get the point, or are you just being a dumbass for fun?

A t-shirt equivilant (yes, that's EXACTLY what the fucking card is) and a CCG are meaningless -- their games are played by millions, WoW is actually known by my fucking grandmother. A movie would impact the brand heavily.

A fucking CCG, no matter how shitty, doesn't do crap to hurt the Blizzard brand unless they start deliberatly coating the cards with cyanide.

I disagree, I think Blizzard is at the point where the brand is strong enough that they are willing to license it to pretty much any endeavor that pays.  I'd probably draw the crap tolerence line somewhere just short of warcraft endorsed porn.

Right now WoW is at maximum brand value no matter what they do from here the only direction left is down.  As you said your grandmother knows who they are who is left?
