Smashing Pumpkin's version of Landslide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_kgc8j8GVU   Tori Amos also does a great job... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSJ9lX0Qw-M  (I like her Cohen cover of Famous Blue Raincoat as well)  And since I'm on a landslide roll here's the Dixie Chicks version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DkD4kjJwG4

And what is a cover discussion without Sid's version of My Way....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLC3uT3aCoE

Here's my ironic entry as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX9esv_US1A (Carole King wrote the song for Aretha Franklin)

Not technically a cover, but Mack the Knife with Frank and Jimmy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGdwQf2a0W0  (I think I've discovered what I like about live music, some people just have fun playing/performing....it adds a ton to the experience. Going to a concert where everyone is just going through the motions... sucks)

Like a virgin!!!!! By Marilyn Manson... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks2yxP5dDpo

I was pretty upset by the addition of Newsted, who simply is not of the same calibre as Cliff, who was not just a virtuoso on bass, but a hell of a songwriter.
Cliff was a musician who understood more than just his instrument but also how to use it in ways that go with different pieces of music in ways you might not necessarily think of.  Jason is just a bass player.  Not a terrible one, but you can't exactly fill shoes like he did and expect anyone to be happy.  Hell, the guys in the band trashed him and hated him.  On AJFA they may as well of not had a bass player considering how out of the mix he was.  I don't hate Jason or crap on his playing style, I just don't think he was the right fit for the band and it shows in the albums they did with him.  I recently went back and listened to the first 3 albums of theirs on a decent stereo and compared them with AJFA & the black one... it's a completely different style of playing and song structure.  One is very formulaic and the other is definitely not a follower or a "me too" style.  My big wonder has always been about how much he was allowed to actually play vs. what he could actually play.  He could have rocked the house off and the rest of the band not let him or he could have just been phoning it in the entire time for the paycheck.  Not knowing the guy personally I can't say ;-)

As far as new Metallica, the few new songs I've heard are alot more inspired than pretty much anything from the last 15 years, but I just don't have any desire to get back into them.  I'd rather spend my money on other bands that I am enjoying more.

Bleh, can't find YouTube versions good enough for the songs I wanted to post (Xiu Xiu's cover of Tracy Chapman's 'Fast Car'_...

R Johnson, 'Stop Breaking Down'; White Stripes cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP4m7Yeo9_c.

Can't find a good vid of their cover of Dylan's 'One More Cup Of Coffee' either.

D Parton, 'Jolene'; White Stripes cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m5KrPXL4wI.

I've had the pleasure of seeing them play Jolene live (4-5 years ago or so), probably the best gig I've been to in my limited life.

Hmm.. can't believe I forgot about The Dan Band, especially on this thread.  If you haven't heard of them, you'd probably remember them from the movie Old School.

Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen & John Cale

Check out Jeff Buckley's version. It puts the other two to shame.

Who could not know about Buckley's version (he mentioned it later btw)?

And as much as I like it, it's pretty stupid to say he puts Cohen and Cale to shame.

Fade to Black - Covered by Apoptygma Berzerk.

And I'll never find it online, I suppose I could rip it - but on a limited edition DVD of Silke Bischoff before they got sued into oblivion and changed their name to 18 summers - there's a fucking killer cover of Eleanor Rigby.

And - as always - there's Dropkick Murphy's doing their rendition of Finnegan's Wake.

One of my favorite covers:  Pearl Jam covering the Beatles I've Got a Feeling http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXEHnmFH89E and just because, BECK's cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YGSgz628O4

I've got a live version of Pearl Jam's cover off a bootleg that's much cleaner but that one is the best I could find on youtube.  I like the emotion Eddie puts into it.

Dylan
Magnet and Gemma Hayes (it's kitschy but I like it)
Ministry Rockin ver
Duran Duran

And for fun:  Biz Markie covering Bennie and the Jets http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iFYJYwtjpc

Edit 2:  More fun:  Gnarls Barkley vs Beastie Boy's, not a cover just a remix that I thought was fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vewsuZQ1wOU

I'll Stand By You: Pretenders, Carrie Underwood (Idols Give Back)

Mad World: Tears for Fears, Michael Andrews/Gary Jules (from Donnie Darko)

Wonderful World: Louis Armstrong, Anwar Robinson (American Idol Season 4)

Thunder Road: Bruce Springsteen, Bruce & Melissa Etheridge (okay not really a cover since its a duet)

Maggie May: Rod Stewart, Melissa Etheridge with Toto (I have the solo acoustic guitar version from the bootleg of the above concert which is much better but this is the only version I could find on YouTube)

Somebody to Love: Queen, Brittany Murphy (Happy Feet soundtrack)

Over the Rainbow: Judy Garland, Eva Cassidy (truly the voice of an angel)

Kathy's Song: Simon & Garfunkel, Eva Cassidy (my favorite S&G song, Eva has a bunch of other covers just search on her name)

People Get Ready: Curtis Mayfield, Rod Stewart & Jeff Beck

Can't Help Falling in Love: Elvis, U2 (Zoo TV tour)

Well, I like the Cohen version, but Buckley put so much emotion and soul into his songs. That's where I think he puts them to shame.

However, to each his/her own.

Die Toten Hosen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKwe3KnI-DU very different but certainly jams.

Edit: In the same style the classic punk cover of Stepping Stone by Minor Threat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x37HM6Uzd4

Just adding on here instead of making new posts:

Mercedes Benz - Janis, Concrete Blonde, Lilith

Yeah there's an entire album of Schoolhouse Rock covers which reminded me of the Saturday Morning Cartoon covers. Here's a sample:

Sugar Sugar: The Archies, Mary Lou Lord

Anyone post this yet?

Chris Cornell -- Billie Jean

[EDIT] Definitely different enough from the original. But definitely nowhere near as good. As crazy as he is, Wacko Jacko could never be topped on that song.

Quick derail but I seriously do not get the love for most of Cohen's work (looks like his older stuff). The only one I've found that I like (and I LOVE this song) is The Stranger Song. All his other songs are ruined by the croaky voice he developed somewhere along the way.

Also much love for posting Orgy, those guys are fantastic. Another cover I found from them is You Spin Me Round. I'd heard it before but never knew who did it.

Here's me cheating and linking to a youtube "video" of it, but hit this link instead for a great cover of What is love.

New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle.

vs.

Frente's Bizarre Love Triangle.

I adore the Frente one. It manages to feel completely different. I like that in a cover.

For kicks, here's Stabbing Westward butchering it.

I'd forgotten how much I like the Frente version of Bizarre Love Triangle - haven't listened to it in years.

Here be Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AratTMGrHaQ

And 'Throw Your Arms around me" - Original version by Hunters and Collectors http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYrgPcBcVG0
And the Pearl Jam version with the lead singer of Hunters and Collectors http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az5HPNMnWAc
Theres also a pile of crappy videos of the Pearl Jam only version that are ruined by bozos singing along out of tune about 3 inches from the microphone...
