I was pretty upset by the addition of Newsted, who simply is not of the same calibre as Cliff, who was not just a virtuoso on bass, but a hell of a songwriter. Cliff was a musician who understood more than just his instrument but also how to use it in ways that go with different pieces of music in ways you might not necessarily think of. Jason is just a bass player. Not a terrible one, but you can't exactly fill shoes like he did and expect anyone to be happy. Hell, the guys in the band trashed him and hated him. On AJFA they may as well of not had a bass player considering how out of the mix he was. I don't hate Jason or crap on his playing style, I just don't think he was the right fit for the band and it shows in the albums they did with him. I recently went back and listened to the first 3 albums of theirs on a decent stereo and compared them with AJFA & the black one... it's a completely different style of playing and song structure. One is very formulaic and the other is definitely not a follower or a "me too" style. My big wonder has always been about how much he was allowed to actually play vs. what he could actually play. He could have rocked the house off and the rest of the band not let him or he could have just been phoning it in the entire time for the paycheck. Not knowing the guy personally I can't say ;-) As far as new Metallica, the few new songs I've heard are alot more inspired than pretty much anything from the last 15 years, but I just don't have any desire to get back into them. I'd rather spend my money on other bands that I am enjoying more.

Bleh, can't find YouTube versions good enough for the songs I wanted to post (Xiu Xiu's cover of Tracy Chapman's 'Fast Car'_... R Johnson, 'Stop Breaking Down'; White Stripes cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP4m7Yeo9_c. Can't find a good vid of their cover of Dylan's 'One More Cup Of Coffee' either. D Parton, 'Jolene'; White Stripes cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m5KrPXL4wI. I've had the pleasure of seeing them play Jolene live (4-5 years ago or so), probably the best gig I've been to in my limited life.

Check out Jeff Buckley's version. It puts the other two to shame.

Who could not know about Buckley's version (he mentioned it later btw)?
And as much as I like it, it's pretty stupid to say he puts Cohen and Cale to shame.

Fade to Black - Covered by Apoptygma Berzerk. And I'll never find it online, I suppose I could rip it - but on a limited edition DVD of Silke Bischoff before they got sued into oblivion and changed their name to 18 summers - there's a fucking killer cover of Eleanor Rigby. And - as always - there's Dropkick Murphy's doing their rendition of Finnegan's Wake.

Well, I like the Cohen version, but Buckley put so much emotion and soul into his songs. That's where I think he puts them to shame. However, to each his/her own.

Quick derail but I seriously do not get the love for most of Cohen's work (looks like his older stuff). The only one I've found that I like (and I LOVE this song) is The Stranger Song. All his other songs are ruined by the croaky voice he developed somewhere along the way. Also much love for posting Orgy, those guys are fantastic. Another cover I found from them is You Spin Me Round. I'd heard it before but never knew who did it. Here's me cheating and linking to a youtube "video" of it, but hit this link instead for a great cover of What is love.
