They're big enough that my kitty, Lister the scaredy cat, would run from it.  Magenta, however, would worry it and torture it, eat part of it and leave the rest for me to clean up.  Why did no one warn me about cats?

Took this on the way home from work yesterday. We'd had 6 inches of snow on the ground only two days before.

First snow of the winter season 2007-2008 here. Rather lousy picture, I know, but a picture nonetheless. The scene was accompanied by that beautiful muted silence of new fallen snow. Made for a calm, refreshing morning.

Nice pics. I love everything about snow, except the fact that it cripples my ability to get to and from work. Living on hill amongst retards who can't drive in snow and thus clog the roads up is infuriating.

Cats are the best. Pics of my two are incoming tomorrow or the next day.

It was about an inch or so (it's a penny). It's not the biggest beetle in North America, but it is scary looking when you're up close and personal!

A balmy 12 degrees fahrenheit this morning.

Still beautiful though.

Been snowing every day here for over a week now, with snow every day in the forecast for the next week. Loving it. We were at 7F when I woke up today. Right now the sun is peeking out, still snowing. My kind of weather. I should really take up skiing or something. Here's a shot out of my new windows at my desk. Viking statue of me.

More snow again today and rather overcast. I was not in the mood for a grey-infested picture and was not feeling very creative today, but I still have a picture for the day. I took it this summer. I give you... a gorilla.

Popped out of work for a sandwich.  Welcome to Scottish weather.  Camera phone, so apologies for the quality.

This picture is notable because it contains one huge bloody castle, about a quarter of a mile across.  The street is called "Castle Street" in honour of the castle.  It might as well be the case that the street is on the edge of a city with a massive cliff-like wall surrounding it, for all you can see:

Actually, I paint (or take, rather) a misleading picture there, in that the weather, with the exception of that hour-long interlude, has been cold, bright and crisp for the last couple of weeks.  Our geography means that Edinburgh is usually dry: that picture of mist and rain would be more like Glasgow, except that they don't have something as pretty as Georgian architecture or an invisible castle.  And the street would be filled with junkies and neds.  And the Starbucks would be a chippy with a metal grill protecting the staff from their Buckfast-fuelled customers.

That weather looks a lot like Seattle usually does during December (this year it has been all over the map. however). Good weather to duck into a pub and drink yourself warm and dry.

For me, the odd thing is that the only time I went to Seattle it was 34 centigrade at the airport, it didn't rain - blue skies the whole time I was there - and I broiled the whole time.  The aircon in the very expensive hotel that MS was paying for was wholly inadequate, and everyone was very apologetic that it wasn't raining.

May through September it is gorgeous here most of the time. The rest of the time it is gray, varying from cool to chilly to fucking cold.

I've been slacking off so I bring you a minor dose of Christmas-sh images.

First, a small tree at home this year:

Next some shots of my cubicle from the office decorating contest:

Santa cruising on the Mac Mini

A dancing, singing Grinch doll

Some holiday confections (cookies, candy canes, gingerbread tree)

The OED pocket version is my best friend  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

That is a nice cubicle.

Going back a few posts, I found the Glasgow homeless to be rather pleasant.  Edinburgh, however, was full of English, Royal Army and tourist traps.

Can anyone just wander in and eat that stuff?

Oh, and Glasgow has some of the nicest street junkies I've ever met.  One Xmas, Righ and I were shopping there before heading up to Dunoon and I got tired and sat on a bench while he finished up.  I wasn't a bit lonely.  I sat and chatted to the homeless heroin addicts for about an hour or so.  It was surprisingly pleasant!

Absolutely. I made some cookies, so I brought in some for the folks around the office. Also a bowl of candy canes. I'm not big on sweets, but everyone else was glad for more cookies.

Ah, an understandable mistake in Glasgow.  The people you spoke to weren't homeless junkies: those were members of the Glaswegian middle classes.
