There is now some experimental JavaScript code running on the site that will open up a "window" (it's not a real browser window) when you click on a YouTube link. This eliminates the need to go to the YouTube site and load in all the other crap just to view the video. You can still go to YouTube if you do whatever command it is in your browser to open up a link in a new tab or window or you can use the LINK link in the popup window itself.

This code may cause issues including crashing your browser so try it at your own risk (I already found one OS X Firefox crash bug that I had to workaround). If you do have a problem post the browser and version number and the OS you are using and I'll try to figure out what's going on.

So I just tried viewing a video link in the Atlanta Falcons thread...I didn't get a browser crash, but I did get some strange artifacting in the video window that would clear up in a second or two. I then tried to view it directly at the youtube site and it looked fine.

Either way, pretty nifty how it works.

Ah, is that how it works? Off to edit that post then.

Hmm, just tried a few YouTube links in the Useless Video thread, and I'm getting the full YouTube site when clicking on them. Does one have to use embedded YouTube video links instead of a link to the page itself?

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

As I said above if you guys are having issues I need browser, browser version and OS info.

If you are using Firefox trying quitting FF and restarting it.

Clear your browser cache and try it again.

As a person making my own videos for YouTube, I'd just like to encourage people to load the actual video page if you see an original video you like. Give it a rating out of five and leave a comment on it.

Community is the soul of YouTube for everyone who is actually making their own stuff (rather than posting other people's copyrighted crap). Having people leave positive comments, ratings and video responses is rewarding. Otherwise you're just adding view count +1 and the person doesn't know whether people liked or disliked their work.

You can still get to the video's actual YouTube page by clicking anywhere on the pop-up while it's playing, or by clicking the word "LINK" at the top right. Thanks.

Not a major issue, but when I try to close one of the windows in Firefox, AdBlock keeps popping up and getting in the way of it.  Have to be very, very precise in order to close the windows. Mac OSX, btw.

Are you using AdBlock to block Flash files on f13.net?

Clear your browser cache and try it again.
Also you have to allow the page to fully load before the popup code will work.

Hmm, tried both those things, but no luck. No big deal to me.

Works fine for me in:

OS X Safari 3.0.2
OS X Firefox 2.0.0.5
WinXP IE 7

I like it, makes Useless Videos even better  :-D

EDIT: OS X 10.4.9
XPSP2

XP Pro, IE 7, and I'm clicking on any and all linked YouTube vids posted on the last page of Useless Videos. I didn't flush cookies, but Temp internet files, form data and passwords were flushed.

I just tried it with a new install of IE 7 on XP Pro and it works for me. I don't use IE 7 but my guess is you have something overriding the left click behavior. Do you have JavaScript turned off?

I don't think so.

Java Plug-in 1.6.0_01
Using JRE version 1.6.0_01 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM

That shows when I pull up the Sun Java console under Tools in IE7

JavaScript is not Java despite Netscape's attempts to confuse the two. Under your security settings what is Active Scripting set to?

It's IE7 and XP here and it worked first time.

It was set to 'Enable', at medium-high (default) settings. For a lark I lowered the security settings to 'medium', just to see if some other setting I don't know about might have blocked it, but no love.

Chances are its to do with my previous problems with my flash installation. I managed to circumvent the problem by creating a virtual C drive to fool the flash player upgrade installer, but who knows if that really worked.

I appreciate your efforts, but I'm clearly an anomaly here, and although I love the personalised attention, not to mention impromptu computer edumacation, your resources are probably best spent elsewhere :)

It stopped working for me today. I'm getting the pop-up video window with a still image but the video doesn't start. That's with Mozilla latest version at home (posting this from an ancient PC I'm not trying video on - will probably take a week to start).

Was it working before? If so clear your browser cache and try it again. If not are you using Firefox or some other Mozilla browser and what version?

Edit: using

Yes it was working before, when I posted earlier in the thread. I'll flush cache when I get home and try again (yep Firefox, not sure which version - I'll let you know if caching doesn't fix).

Edit - it's now working in my Firefox, so all is well (apart from my preferring that people go to the actual video page and rate/comment!).

Kind of worked under the latest Firefox; video was a bit laggy, so I just open a new tab for the video's actual page.

I'd like it better if back was intercepted and did close rather than previous url.  And also it seems to screw up every so often and fail to accept the mouse position as legit for hitting play so you have to wander around with the mouse until you find a location it likes.

Has anyone else noticed trouble with pressing the play button in the popup window? I notice that I cannot click on it if I alt+tab to another program.
