Skinny-dippin' in a sea of Lee, I'd propose on bended knee...

I had to take the time out of my busy schedule at the new store to give everyone a pretty interesting tidbit of news. Our super secret inside gaming guy, Ninja X, droppd off some very, very interesting news late last night. It seems as though 3DRealms is starting to slowly drop hints about what is happening with Duke Nuke Forever. Here is what he had to say.
3D Realms has something up their sleeves. They also picked up a lethal artist by the name Feng Zhu (see 'freelance info' on the lefthand side) Feng is currently working with famed director James Cameron and has finished working on Star Wars Episode III. He has also worked with Epic Games. I can assure you...from a very reliable source...DNF IS using the Unreal Engine 3. Also 3DRealms is planning for a 2005/2006 release to tie-in with the anniversary of Duke Nukem.
Well what can I say but I hope all of this pans out as I still would like to see a new Duke game sometime. Information blatantly stolen from UnrealOps.

Duke Nukem Forever is using the Unreal 3 engine?
So IF that were true, that would mean all of the work on it from 1999 to 2004 can be thrown away.
Also Unreal 3 isn't even out yet. They arent going to be licensing out their engine until it's actually about to come out.
This has to be the worst fake rumor I have heard in a long time. DNF will never come out, accept it and move on.

Few interesting facts about DukeForever that I spotted on another website: Unknown 2001: Broussard states that DNF will definitely be out before Unreal 2. ... Unknown 2002: Broussard states that DNF will definitely be out before DooM 3. ... The Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled approximately 2.6 billion miles since the announcement of Duke Nukem Forever. The rovers Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, announced, designed, launched and successfully landed upon Mars within the timeframe of Duke Nukem Forever's development. The majority of the children who were entering high school the school year following Duke Nukem Forever's announcemnt are now eligible to drink.

What some gaming journalist (should one actually exist mind you), should do is ask for a review to see exactly what is done on DNF and get a chance to see it in action.
Should George B. refuse or have some excuse, the interviewer should tell him that this is EXACTLY what will be reported in their magazine, and that 3d Realms and its games will not be given ANY press since its clearly they don't exist. Oh, and a personal request to get the hell out of this industry, preferrably right now.

Also Unreal 3 isn't even out yet. They arent going to be licensing out their engine until it's actually about to come out. You are confusing "Unreal 3 the game" with "Unreal Engine 3.0" - the latter is out in the form of Unreal Tournament 2004. That said, they need to hurry with DNF before the next, shiny 3D engine is out, and they switch. Again.

I think GB is a genius. Who else can work for so many years in the gaming industry without releasing a game? Unless he's living in a cardboard box, he's got a great scam going on.

Most of the assets (sounds, textures, models, static meshes, etc.) for these sorts of games are created outside of the game/level editor and then imported in. Most if not all of that stuff can be preserved depending on which engine they are moving from. The levels may have to be redone if they are switching from id-style "fill in empty space" level designs to Unreal-style "carve out solid space" level designs, though some of that might be convertable with custom tools. If they were using an earlier Unreal engine then virtually all of it can be kept, though they'll still probably redo a lot of stuff to take advantage of the new features of that engine.

So far they've used the Unreal engine, the Quake 3 engine, and now another Unreal engine. And that's just what I remember and my memory isn't all that good.
I hear TF2 is looking pretty good and will be released concurrently with DNF, just prior to the opening of all the portals and the raping of the Washington Monument by Shoggoth, Penis God.

We should pool some money and ask Ms.Cleo what she thinks will happen with DNF.

Didn't they start by using the Quake 2 engine? I thought it was Quake I? I looked it up on the 3D Realms site and Rodent's correct -- they started on the Quake II engine in 1997 and switched to the Unreal engine in 1998.

Here's a thread re: this topic with a denial from a worker bee at 3D Realms (the Webmaster, search for "Joe3DR") though it's not clear what he's saying is false.

Hopefully they are thinking ahead this time and include native support for 512-bit nano-processors. I'd hate to think I'll need to wait for a patch after I get my free pre-order of DNF with my ATI Oberon 61000 (4 GB) video card.

From GameSpot: Duke Nukem Forever using Doom 3 engine?Besides revealing a cornucopia of Grand Theft Auto details, today's Take-Two Interactive call also disclosed new information on 3D Realms' legendarily delayed shooter, Duke Nukem Forever. In the question-and-answer session that followed the company's earnings call, Take-Two CEO Rich Roedel fielded a question from UBS analyst Mike Wallace. The exchange went like this:
Wallace: "And then just one more [question] for fiscal '05. It is Duke Nukem [Forever] in the plan?"
Roedel: "No, it is not in any of the guidance that we've given."
Wallace: "OK. And should we just completely forget about this product by now or...?"
Roedel: "Absolutely not, although it has been frustrating in terms of committing to a ship date. But the 3D Realms guys continue to work. They are using the Doom 3 technology, which is finished. They are a premier developer, but they certainly believe in no line before it's time. So they want to deliver a great game, and we are anxiously waiting for updates from them."
The Take-Two CEO has given wrong information about DNF before so who knows. EDIT: Yup, Take-Two CEO talking out of his butt again: Shacknews - Duke4 NOT Using DOOM3 Tech
