Might as well give it a shot. Call them and order the coffin before doing the deed.

I feel the need to point out that in EU the PS3 should be dropping 99euro and in the US $99 on March 22nd. So, $300 80GB PS3s. $299.99 is supposedly the magic number for "winning." We'll see if it's true though.

Edit: The alternative is that the Target leak comes true, which would be a shame. Because that bundle sucks for the price. Not because the games are bad (they aren't) but because  price drop is more important.

Thanks to all who replied and advice therein.

1)  I can't "play Fable 2 til I get the true RRoD" because of the E 74 code -- the unit is unplayable.

2)  Buying an PS 3 is out of the question at this time because of the huge amount of 360 games I have (played and unplayed).

3)  It sounds like repair is the only option to me....although I do plan on pitching a fit after I get home from work with MS Support and maybe I'll get lucky and get someplace.

The question is to have MS repair it, or one of these other people who charge a lot less plus still have a warranty and are reputable.

Of course.....I could always go get that pick up that new Red Elite box.....    DRILLING AND MANLINESS

If you don't want to hear the answer -- don't ask the question.

You don't need to play. Just turn the thing on and cover it with a blanket. It'll rrod eventually.

Really not the thread for this, but what's the status of PS2 compatibility?  I know there was some kind of early hardware compat, then none, then software, then maybe something else and I went all  swamp poop.

I just want to know what percentage of my PS2 games will run on a PS3.

Looks like the Target rumor is true, though it doesn't necessarily preclude an actual price drop.

I've never had an Xbox red ring...

...however I did have a release 360.  Owned it for almost 3 years worry free.  With the three year mark coming up I didn't want to take a chance so I traded it in and picked up an elite.  I somehow thought this was clever as I'd get to take advantage of the game installs using the 120GB drive.   Funny thing.  I had my first Elite for 4 months when it stopped recognizing discs.  No problems, I returned it and received a brand spanking new Elite as a replacement... which I had for a total of 4 months when for some inexplicable reason it stopped recognizing discs.   I am now on my fourth Xbox.  I've never gotten one red ring of death but I have experienced my fair share of shoddy craftsmanship.  Go Team!

They're very keen on keeping the initial price very high. Last time there was a notable "relaunch", they simply upgraded the HDD size, and kept the price up. Though there's been plenty of local (.au) software bundles that shit on that Target one.

Was it making loud grindy noises as the disc spun up, and would then fail to read it? If so, you likely had the "grommet issue": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_xSsNmjqKI

Fix was easy once I figured out how to get the damn box open.

So I called MS back, and convinced them to fix it for free.  (READ:  Lied and told them I had 3 red lights).

Sent it in, they fixed in ONE DAY and got it back last night.  Total Turnaround time from broke to fix was less than 2 weeks.

It works like a champ so far......

I got my fixed (read new) console yesterday. Didnt have time to do anything except plug it in and set it up. It looks nice and new. Oh yeah, they also gave me a 1 month Xbox Live card.

Maybe Xbox number 7 will be the magic one?

I didnt even think to check. I will check when I get home. If I read the article correctly, I need to look for the 12v power rail. 12,1 is what I am hoping for.

Weak. I got a Zepher. That mean I am in for another RROD? Wonder if I should wrap it in a bath towel and see if I can force it.

Allright, after 2 years and 3 months my 360 red ringed. I purchased the 3 year extended warranty from Target so I have a choice to either send it to whoever does their warranties or send it to Microsoft. Which one should I do? I'm leaning towards Target since I know retail warranties usually just send you a gift card for the store, right? I could then get a brand new box, 60gb instead of 20gb, HDMI and since the price has gone down $60 I could pick up a game too. Has anyone had experiences with the Target warranties with consoles?

Find out if they give you a new one. If they don't, may as well play the Microsoft lottery.

You should be able to just take it to Target and have them switch it on the spot for a new one. I did that for 3 of mine.

Looks like Microsoft caved and is now offering 3 year warranties for E 74 codes too.

Wow, my 2.5 year old 360 died with the E74 error last week.  I had originally thought I purchased a one year extended warranty and had almost trashed it but on a whim I checked online to see what the repair cost would be and it showed it covered.  I assumed I had bought a two year and misremembered but now I'm not sure.

Awesome, I'll send mine next week.  It'll be nice to have a 360 again.  There was no way I was paying for it to be fixed considering the reliability issues.

So, I am still trying to decide what to do about my Xbox. I am pissed I got a Zypher, and I just know its going to RRoD again. I just don't know how much warranty I have left on the thing. I am considering forcing a RRoD, but i am afraid that my warranty might already be out. Does anyone know the full warranty details for RRoD, and if you get any sort of new warranty after the 30 days? If you are out of the 3 years from initial purchase date.

I had mine since launch and just sold it a month ago and the only problem I had was that it would overheat from time to time. Surprisingly awesome!

I've had mine since a few months after launch... It will play a game for about 10 minutes, then lock up, but it's fine for hours after that.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

That's what mine had. Must have been in the final days of it's 1-year warranty, too, since they fixed it for free.

Just RROD'd yesterday on an almost 2-year old Elite that got fairly heavy play in its life. For the first time ever in my earthly existence, I'd bought a replacement plan from Best Buy when I got the machine (I wouldn't have chosen to get it from there, but an uninformed family member gave me a pretty sizeable gift certificate to BB). BB doesn't stock the Elite any longer. So after putting me through all sorts of bullshit about returning all of the components in the original Elite box including the crap headset which I haven't used since I bought it, they then proceeded to run around like chickens with their heads cut off when I didn't just accept the Pro and walk out of the store. First it was just going to be "here you go, it's an XBox replacement, cya, sorry it doesn't have all the stuff your original machine did". Then they were, "Oh, you have store credit for the full price of the Elite, did we mention that? Don't know how we forgot. So go get yourself a 120gb drive too!" I ahem'ed and they were like, "Oh, the HDMI cable? You'll have to buy that too with store credit, and you know what, the price of the Elite doesn't quite cover all three of those things when you buy them a la carte" I was like, whatever fuckers, last time I buy anything from you anyway, here's your $40.00 and see you, at least I end up with a backup 60GB drive out of the deal. Thank god the fucking machine RROD'd with about 3 weeks left to go in the original replacement plan, close call.

You could have just called MS and had them send you a box. You'd have a new Elite within a week or so.

Thought that was just one year extension. Anyhoo, the aim of taking out a replacement was to leapfrog to a new machine coming from a point where RROD occurance had gone down, since I was buying right at the point where there was a lot of debate about whether a fix had been implemented, etc.
