Just curious, are any of the redring stories here on Elites, or all just standard boxes? Since I use my Elite for streaming, I use the shit out of it and haven't had the slightest issue with it.

Hopefully knocking on a piece of compressed wood by-product keeps me safe. I am at work and no real wood is to be found.

Mine is an elite.

Every time I read these things, I put off buying one.  There are even lots of games I'd like to play on it.  If it buggers up though... I'm just not good with frustration.

Signe, from all reports I have heard, the newer models dont RROD. It had to do with the heatsink and mobo warping with heat. But the newer ones are designed differently inside.

You are missing out on a lot of good gaming. I am on my 5th 360 (My current one being the only newer version) and I am still glad I bought it.

OK, but if I get frustrated, I'm coming for you.

The box came out lickity split and I sent it out yesterday.

And promptly came down with the Flu.  Now I just want to lay down and play some 360. But I have none.

Took more than a week to get my shipping box last week, also got no confirmation email that was promised "shortly" when I put the repair request in online, made a pointless call to support that wasted a bunch more time.. grr. The guy at the UPS store was like "what the heck are these things!?", and explained that they have been getting at least 2 or 3 per day lately. I mumbled something about chips popping out due to greedy unscrupulous corporate types.

G'damn, now I'm jonesing to play some College Hoops 2K8, had just started a grand new legacy... arrgh.  Cry

FWIW, after sitting in the return box for a year, I got the HD sent back to me in 5 days and a replacement 360 in 7 (a year ago, the instructions didn't tell you to remove the HD before packing it).  The most annoying part of the whole thing is that there were no "UPS Store" locations in Austin (the nearest location to drop it off was in Round Rock), so it sat near the door for almost a year waiting for me to have some reason to go to Round Rock, until my wife discovered one had opened a couple of miles away (in retrospect, I should have paid the $10 to have them pick it up).

It seems to work fine (but I haven't had the older boy leave it in split-screen HD Halo 3 for 10 hours to really test it out).

Got mine in Dec. '06 and it's still going strong.  I've seen it freeze up twice in the entire time I've owned it.

I'm sure this helps quite a bit.  I can attribute each of the failures I have personally seen to heat in some manner, which is why I really wanted the Falcon board.

Although my houses tend to be a bit warmer than the blasted heath without, in all seriousness I have used an external intercooler fan with a separate power supply since the first couple of months, when stories started coming out of the heat issues.

I live in Tucson.  I also can't remember the time I've played on my 360 for longer than 3 hours at a stretch.

I also never leave a disk in the tray, but this is just OCD born from paranoia.

I am much more cavalier about my 360's health, preferring not to treat it like a fragile miscarriage of engineering.  So far, so good. awesome, for real

Me too. I'm going to use it for all its worth, and if it RRoD (as it does) I'll have MS fix it under warranty.

My launch 360 died for the second time a few weeks ago.  The first time the video section went out, this time it was the RRoD.

Since it is over three years old no more warranty applies.  Rather than spend $94 bucks on repairing a defective design I bought an Arcade version with the Jasper shipset in Walmart for $199.

I notice it runs cooler now, and I hope this is the last 360 I need to buy.

Still running the same Elite I bought just after they launched. I did have to repair the dvd drive in it once, but otherwise its still stable. I run it standing up right, on top of the stand, so there's no airflow restrictions around it at all.

I haven't gotten a rrod, but Fables 2 killed my xbox's video. Video degraded until there was no output at all. It's has an '06 manufacturing date. Disappointed in the quality, my ps2 is older than my xbox, has been used more, and has never had a problem.

Got the console repaired but now I'm getting Fables 2's freeze bug that Lionhead can't reproduce so don't expect a patch, lol game is cursed for me.

I have a 1st generation, and it is still running like a champ. The first one I bought had the RROD right out of the box though.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Mine just died last night.  One flashing light and an E 74 code.

I purchased the unit on March 8, 2008, so it is all of 9 days out of warranty -- figures.

Microsoft says that I have to pay for the fix since it is only 1 light and not the 2 light RRoD.  Whatever -- it's still a fucking hardware failure.  I can't believe they won't fix it for free.

I found some places online that will fix it for far less than Microsoft, but I fear I might be "getting what I pay for."

If you don't want to hear the answer -- don't ask the question.

Smells like PS3 time.

Also, the RRoD is 3 rings.

This is why I bought the Target extended warranty.  Wal*Mart also has one.  Cheaper than a game and odds are in favor of you needing it.

Actually that's not bad advice.  Wrap it in a blanket and play Fable 2 until either the 360 or you die.

Nor have I, but still...you are ultimately taking action to melt the innards of your machine.  Not inherently safe, and whatnot.

Actually, it's 3/4 of 1 ring.

Well.

Once you've called with another problem, they have you on file for that. Forcing a red ring won't get anything fixed but the GPU stuff, which still won't fix the console. You're screwed.

...and the best marshmallows are the ones that catch fire for just a brief few seconds.  But yeah.

You have a point about it being on file.  But there are rumors that they simply power on your machine to confirm RROD, and then simply swap your machine with another that they've refurbished...so they may not discover any other flaws.  I don't know if this is true or not, as I didn't check the serial numbers on mine when I had my RROD experience.
