Does this seem stupid to anyone else?

Hi, I'm Kevin Smith. You may remember me as the director and creator of the following films: Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy, and other wholesome pieces of family fun. Maybe you haven't heard of my latest movie though, Jersey Girl. You see, this one flopped because I convinced myself that 9 minutes of Jennifer Lopez wasn't too much and that Ben Affleck had the ability to 'ACT' in my movies, but not in anyone elses. Either way, I'm going to go rape my first movie to redeem myself for my last abortion. DO YOU WANT TO TOUCH ME?

Fuck you Kevin Smith. Korea was planning on you hiring them to animate your epic animated film.

It should really be animated though. Clerks was an art fags dream. Clerks 2 should be a wild saturday morning cartoon romp.

Then he learned he can't direct a movie based outside of his "universe". I doubt I'll want to see "Clerks 2" since I liked the original ending of "Clerks" where Dante gets shot. I also found the original opening of "Mallrats" to be superior to the one they used in release. Oh well.

Personally, I didn't find that it added to the movie really at all. It was almost exactly the sort of twist ending you would expect from a student flick. The released ending seemed much more appropriate to me. Just a day in the life, nothing huge happens. Just everyday weird shit that taken all together is what makes even the life of two minimum wage store clerks interesting.

IMO, It took more balls NOT to leave in the twist ending and the movie is better for it. As far as Kevin Smith revisting clerks 10 years later? Well as long as he can be honest with it I can't see it being too bad, of course 10 years as a hollywood director has probably skewed his vision a bit more askew than he thinks.

Clerks and Mallrats were fine as released. The original/deleted ending/beginning of the movies were not that good. Maybe a variation on the original Mallrats intro could have worked, but what they showed on the DVD just dragged.

95% of the time, there is a damn good reason that deleted scenes stay that way. The rest of the time they seem to be in James Cameron films.

I am obviously missing something. Why would Clerks 2 be animated or anything other than live action? Did Smith ever say he was going to make an animated Clerks 2?

I don't follow the guy very much at all. I have seen Clerks (liked it a lot), Mallrats (thought it sucked ass, despised all the characters and was hoping strongly against a 'happy' ending for those fucktards), Chasing Amy (mediocre at best), Dogma (liked it a lot), and thats all.

Any outrage at a Clerks 2 movie is just baffling to me.

I can't see any point in revisiting the subject matter. He can't come up with anything new? I thought Dogma was a decent flik.

I'd recommend checking out J and Silent Bob Strike Back on DVD mainly for the deleted scenes. The deleted prostitute scene is hilarious and really sucks that it had to be cut from the movie. It's the kind of scene you can watch a few times and each time it gets funnier and funnier as you notice everything that's going on.

To tell you the truth, I am kind of excited about it. I rewatched Clerks again this weekend after seeing this thread (well, the first half at least...I was exhausted and fell asleep), and I think there is plenty more fun to be had with Dante and Randal. Especially if there is a prolonged Caitlin Bree frontal nudity scene...

While nothing will have the charm and newness of Clerks, I think exploring the lives of the same characters 10 years down the road is potentially hilarious. Beats the shit out of Jersey Girl 2: Menstruation.

I still haven't seen Jersey Girl, so I still have his best work in mind.

Sure, why the fuck not? Look, the man made what I consider 5 of the funniest fucking films on the planet. The last of which was an entirely fan-pleasing kind of in-joke movie and I STILL laugh my ass off at it. I haven't seen anything of his that wasn't at least decent, including the Clerks TV series (the animated one).

His whole career has been about indulging himself. Why the fuck should now be any different? You do what you can do; if it isn't some stunningly original new form of art, but it's still entertaining, well at least there's entertainment.

- This is not a grab at the green. Saying so is kinda laughable, if you're privy to what I make per film now, vs. what I'll make for this film. Part of the idea about doing "Passion" is to strip away the trappings of success we've been enjoying for the last few years, in an effort to get to the raw and pure. None of us are making our usual salaries on this flick; we're all doing it favored-nations style, with deferments. If the flick does well, we'll get paid our full-freight on the back-end. If not, we did it for the love. But if I was "all about the green", I'd be gearing up for "Hornet" or "Fletch" instead. This one's about the passion; the passion of the "Clerks."

- Some of the key players from the "Clerks" saga who've already read the 143 page first draft: Mos, Jeff, Brian, John Pierson, Bob Hawk. Jay's reading the new, refined 119 page second draft this week. Once they were all on board, any doubt or hesitation I might've felt about monkeying with the original's legacy disappeared completely.

- This isn't about "Jersey Girl." While disappointed that we didn't do double the theatrical business we crawled to, I understand why what happened to that flick happened (considering how poorly "Gigli" did, I consider us kinda lucky that we got to 25m). If this is a reaction to anything, it's more of a reaction to "Green Hornet", and the trajectory my budgets have been taking lately. Before (and if) I direct "Hornet", I wanted to do something small and more me-like. While working on the "Clerks X" dvd, it became clear to me that "Passion" was the way to go.

- We almost did this flick three years ago, instead of "Strike Back." I'm glad we didn't, because I was able to say much more now than I would've then.

- There are gonna be lots of folks expressing disappointment or downright hostility with the idea of this movie. Let 'em vent. If it's all that bad, Xtian will just sweep it off the board. But the last thing I'm interested in is opinions on what I'm doing this early in the process, if at all. The beauty of making that first flick was being able to do it in a vacuum. Granted, I could've kept my mouth shut about it 'til we were done shooting; but with "Clerks X" coming out, it just felt right to share. Regardless - I don't want folks running here with reports of what's being said about the idea of this film at other boards. Don't waste your/my time with the braying of the jackasses. There's not even a movie to bray about yet. Once there is, if you still still feel the need to tell me what some random, knuckle-headed Talk Backer has to say about the finished product, then God bless. But until then, leave it in the locker room.

- Oh, who am I kidding? This flick makes me so happy, I'm not even bothered by the bitching (could still be even happier without it, though). I'm in love with this flick. If other folks aren't, I can't really say I'm concerned. I've read the script; they haven't. I have the benefit of insight into the flick beyond the title and the notion of it; they don't. The reaction is pretty much what I thought it'd be: a ton of positive, and minimal amount of bitching. Even if the equation was reversed, I'd still feel as good as I do now.

- At this point in my life, this flick makes absolute fucking sense.

- I can't wait to shoot it, and I can't wait 'til you all see it.

- That storyline about Dante and Randal shooting a movie about working at the Quick Stop is the plot of the "Clerks" CARTOON movie. It's secure. The plot of "PotC" is something completely different.

- The flick does NOT employ the tone of the "Clerks" cartoon. It's OG "Clerks" all the way.

- The flick's in both black & white and color.

- Having not seen "South Park" since season two (unless you count the movie), I was unaware they did an episode called "The Passion of the Jew." I don't know how (or if) this info will affect our title.

- There will be no "reunions" or "crossovers" in the flick. Again - the only characters returning are Dante, Randal, Jay, and Bob.

More info when the questions pile up...

Bummer. I guess no Veronica will mean no more "37" jokes.

Nice use of the best Anthrax-song-that-doesn't-have-Public-Enemy-in-it, but a really odd choice to go with "no talking" for a guy whose whole shtick is awkward dialogue and nerdy in-jokes.

I am the Law was always my favorite, but I also so own a complete Eagle Comics Judge Dredd collection.

Man, I'm a huge idiot. For some reason I thought Murgos was challenging my weak assertion by presenting better Anthrax songs. But I'm pretty sure it's Among the Living... The chorus is fuzzy in my head but there was some "receeding... he's falling... among.. the... living!". Or something like that.

The thing I'm most surprised by, really, is that I would have thought that Affleck and Lee had "paid their debt" to Smith with that last one. Guess not!
