Pretty much, what do I do and how do I work so as to not be a complete moron for 2 months?
Is there some sort of helpful site where I can learn basic terms, basic strats and what the hell it is I need to be doing? I'd like to consider myself to not be a complete retard, but it does help to know what the hell the thing is about before screwing up irreperably.

Just some quick starting tips - http://wiki.goonfleet.com/index.php?title=Recommended_Base_Stat_Builds Is a good basic guide for creating your first character. http://wiki.goonfleet.com/index.php?title=Recommended_Skill_Training_Guide Unfortunately the first skills you should train are all boring learning skills before you get to fun pew pew stuff, this is a decent guide for that. Do the tutorial, don't skip it. Join the F13 chat channel, click the channels button on the left side and join F13 Do not be afraid to ask in the channel for some starting isk, a new character has a really nasty time getting going due to lack of funds. Bhodii has lots of usefull links posted in the stickied "Usefull Links" post in this forum, you may want to check some of them out. I'm sure many more people will post much more stuff for you.

This game's worse than most -- the learning curve is insane. And every time you master it, you try something new and it's like starting all over again. :) On the bright side, it's probably THE best game for people randomly giving you tons of money so you can learn, and newb corps are generally really good about helping. (So is the F13/Bat channels). Still, do the tutorial. Even the boring mining bits.

What race do I get to be useful to the F13 pvp thingy?
I'm assuming Caldari?

Any really. Caldari's probably quickest, but one of the joys of EVE is that anyone can fly anything if they put in the time. Specific ships are based off of specific skills (if you want to fly Caldari Frigates, you need the Caldari Frigates skill) but the support stuff is universal -- and you can learn any skill. So as a Gallente, if I wanted to fly a Caldari missile cruiser -- all my armor, shielding, gunnery, and missile skills would work just fine. I'd jsut have to train Caldari Frigates to III or IV and then Caldari Cruisers to III or IV -- about two weeks and I'd be blasting things from a Caldari cruiser instead of a Gallente one. What race is really a matter of what you want to do first -- what sort of gameplay you like. Gallente are drone (pet) focused, Amarr are laser focused, Caldari love their missiles, and Minmatar....I can't really recall. But their ships look cool, if you like junkyard art.

Speed. Also projectile weapons that use no cap (mana?) to fire and do really nice damage.

For immediately being useful to f13 pvp ops here's my personal unrecognized guide:
For Caldari: -l2fly a Caracal, fly some L2 missions, so you understand the basics of ship fitting, damage, speed, etc. -ask lots of questions in f13 -by your second week you should complete these tasks so you can die in glorious combat!!! -have enough isk to buy and insure 2 Griffin frigates -train ewar skills so you can fit ECM modules -talk to Bhodi about how to fly ewar ships, bug him incessently
-now you are ready for pvp, your ship can jam other frigate hulls and cruisers if you have the right racial jammers, people will kill you quickly because being jammed sucks. Congrats!
-on the pve side of things if you get bored with mission running while working towards a passive drake for L3 missions you can: -train destroyer -train salvaging -train indy to 2 and buy a battle-badger -bring a DD and/or Badger down to Provi and help move loot and salvage shit while hanging out with corpmates who are ratting in battleships, watch local.
For 'Matar: -l2fly a Rupture for L2 missions -ask lots of questions in f13 -by your second week you should complete these tasks so you can die in glorious combat!!! -have enough isk to buy and insure 2 Vigil frigates -train skills so you can fit MWD, stasis web & warp scrambler -talk to anyone about how to fly tackler ships, practice some on your corpmates, figure out what your best orbit distance is.
-now you are ready for pvp, your ship can lockdown other ships and we need that in order to bring larger guns to bear, you have the speed that if you take the right angle or just get lucky you can even get a web on an interceptor.
-on the pve side of things if you get bored with mission running while working towards a Hurricane for L3 missions you can: -train destroyer -train salvaging -train indy to 2 and fly a Hoarder -bring a Thrasher and/or Hoarder down to Provi and help move loot and salvage shit while hanging out with corpmates who are ratting in battleships, watch local.
For Gallante: -l2fly Vexor with drones, learn to love drones, learn to not leave them in space. Do L2 missions. -ask lots of questions in f13 -Bug people like Morat and Murgos constantly about fittings and whatnot for drone ships.
-by your second week you should complete these tasks so you can die in glorious combat!!! -train Minmatar frigate skill to III -have enough isk to buy and insure 2 Vigil frigates -train skills so you can fit MWD, stasis web & warp scrambler -talk to anyone about how to fly tackler ships, practice some on your corpmates, figure out what your best orbit distance is.
-now you are ready for pvp, your ship can lockdown other ships and we need that in order to bring larger guns to bear, you have the speed that if you take the right angle or just get lucky you can even get a web on an interceptor.
-on the pve side of things if you get bored with mission running while working towards a Myrmidon ub3r tank + deathdrones for L3 missions you can: -train destroyer -train salvaging -train indy to X and fly a Iteron Mark X -bring a Catalyst and/or Iteron down to Provi and help move loot and salvage shit while hanging out with corpmates who are ratting in battleships, watch local.
For Amarr: -l2fly Maller with Armor tank skills & a focus on gunnery. Do L2 missions. -ask lots of questions in f13 -Bug someone like me or anyone else you catch flying Amarr ships, we have someone who flys Zealots but I forget who atm.
-on the pve side of things if you get bored with mission running while working towards a Myrmidon ub3r tank + deathdrones for L3 missions you can: -train destroyer -train salvaging -train indy to 1 and fly a 'Stower -bring a Coercer and/or 'Stower down to Provi and help move loot and salvage shit while hanging out with corpmates who are ratting in battleships, watch local.

Hey, this post is useful even to me. I'm over 2 weeks and still not doing the below!
L2 missions seem like a big grind. I have an L2 agent that will talk to me at standing 1.0, but I'm currently at .18 or something and gaining .1 per L1 mission. I know, social3/connections1/2/3, but that takes time from me getting to the point where I can actually fly something that will handle L2s.
I am very interested in the help move salvage part. I have a character that can do that. I guess to find out exactly where I need access to the seekrit forum, ahem ahem ahem. A week ago Viin told me I was already in the list but I still don't see the forum.

The learning skills help a lot long-term and are certainly worth it, but I'd advise anyone starting against spending a solid month on learning before doing anything else. Yes, technically you have saved training time, but you spent a month not learning any of the quick to train basic skills. Mix the learning skills with stuff you're interested in and have some fun along the way. - Q

Nah. Train Gallente Frigate to III or IV and and get a Maulus and fit Remote Dampers and damp the ever loving SHIT out of someone. Or get an Incursus and scramble the shit out of someone while dealing suprising damage with guns. The Incursus is an evil little fuck of a frigate. Also, train Drone Interfacing if you're going to use drones. Seriously. It is THE best Drone skill in the game. Hands down.

Be Gallente. I know that minmatar are the end-game solo ships, but they take a long time to get good at. And Caldari have great ECM ships, but they can be limiting for a while mid-game. Gallente aren't the awesome pwnmobiles that they were last year, but they are still flexible as fuck.

Tell that to the Ishtar I plan to fly. :) Man, I can't wait to be able to aford an Arazu. That ought to make some of our PvP missions more fun, especially when we're heavy on snipers and missile boats. :)

Isn't the modern convention to "Pick Caldari Achura and train <whatever is the awesome of the month>"?
I hate to break it, but the Arazu isn't all it's cracked up to be anymore. People stopped using it after the RSD nerf.

The Maulus or Incursus is just another kill to a HAC/Ceptor without ever doing anything of value. Both are eaten by t2 drones before you can blink like all t1 frigs but the Caldari/Matar frigs have some upside in tackling and breaking locks. Not that that is a definitive agreed upon guide, which I think I stated, merely one persons opinion of how to plot a course to quick very-early pvp and pve success with the various races.

THey didn't get nerfed that badly, IIRC -- they should still be able to damp a target from safely outside your target's new range.

I can pop five double-damage ones, with the bay for (I think) at least one flight of mediums and lights, as well as another flight of heavies. And the tank on that thing holds up against a Myrmidion with good drone skills, although NOT when it's aided by a Domi with good drone skills. (And Ogre IIs).

Wierd. I went from L1s to L2s without any real delay or training any social/connections stuff. I think some missions give more standing bonus than others? Also, storyline missions give a much bigger boost every 16 or so regular missions - have you done any of those yet? There's also the sec status of the system the agent is in, if you're in a high (>0.8) sec system you may want to look for a L1 agent in a 0.5 or 0.6 system as you should make faster progress. Also, agent quality is something to look out for.

Absolutely spend the time to train Social 3/Connections 2--it will get you into L2's smoothly, probably before you are -really- ready.
After that, I was able to ignore social skills until I'm ready to push into L4's, although they are looking mighty attractive to get a jump clone (need a standings level of 8.0 for that from what I understand).

Remember that Connections is worth less as you approach 8.0. At 8.0 Connections IV would only be giving you a boost equal to 16% of the remaining 2.0 potential standing. So it is useful for getting into higher level missions and therefore gaining more standing per mission, but not that useful once you reach the mission level you want to grind to 8.0 with.
