Okay, so it's not the fancy "SteamID (http://steamcommunity.com/id/cal/)" they had me make, but my actual Steam login, that's awesome... apparently. You're offline so it's garnet@ccrepair.net.

Also, to add on another layer of weirdness I had to change my password for it to even let me sign in on the actual Steam Community page (but it worked fine through Steam with either PW).

Do I need to reinstall HL2 to get this thing running? Christ only knows where the CDs are.

On the off chance I wasn't just sarchasmed: download Steam from http://www.steampowered.com (http://www.steampowered.com).  Steam itself is free.  Also, I think that if you registered your retail HL2 via your Steam account, you can automagically reinstall it without the CDs if you want to (not that you'd need to in order to get the Steam community thing up and running).

I remember thinking "that's cool" when I saw all the stats in GTA3, but after checking them a few times it was white noise. Seriously it makes no difference if you walked 41234123 steps or 56345630 steps.  So what is the next step, a graph of the number rings with +11 int your team has looted in Charspike in the last six months?

Who cares if there's no difference? I like knowing how many steps I've walked. Also, teh graph above made me a little hot.

Stats are cool by themselves, but you did level up your walking speed in GTA.  It was hard to notice unless you started a new game, and was probably more pronounced in the later installments.  Some were just odometers, though, like number of SMG rounds fired.  No difference in the game mechanics as I played it, but it was a difference in the game as I perceived it.

I love the stat tracking stuff. It's fun. I like how the little guy in your tower in the Overlord demo would call you different names depending on what you'd been up to. Customizability based on how you play is the new frontier.

I'd just like to say that while none of you are fired, I am very disappointed in the performance that some of you have put forward. We're up, but we're not up enough.

Basically, what I'm trying to say here, is we need people in Charspike 24/7. I want +11 int rings falling out of the goddamn sky. I want to make a toilet out of +11 int rings, shit out +11 int rings, and wipe with +11 int rings, after which I flush the toilet, and a pile of +11 int rings washes it all down the pipes, which are made of +11 int rings.

Braving the sarchasm (and trying not to re-rail)... it works just (http://percentsign20.com/files/random/steamcommunity/sc-gw-overlay.jpg) fine (http://percentsign20.com/files/random/steamcommunity/sc-wow-overlay.jpg) (caution, 1440x900 res). All you need to do is go to Games (on the menu bar) -> Add non-Steam game to My Games list... and Steam Community will auto-magically work. I've only tried it out with Guild Wars and WoW, but the overlay is as polished as what you'd find in a multiplayer Source engine game like CS:S or DoD.

I can't help but compare it to Xfire at this point, and considering it's just into Beta, I'm rather pleased:

+ Group system kicks the crap out of Xfire's.
+ In-game is much more polished, although the new version of Xfire's is nice.
+ Auto-resizing avatars... super shiny!
+ Apparently in-game just "works", so no need to wait for a patch to release support for new games.

- It doesn't track per-game stats for non-Steam games.
- You can't exit Steam while a game you have Steam Community running in is running as it considers it a "Steam app". (I assume because of the overlay functionality.)

SOJ prices have gone through the floor because some devs are in the Fartknockers guild and having been spawning SOJs by the millions to fund their war against Whooligans and their many allies.  Which gets us back to +11 int rings because they fall under Dev Youb (3rd Teir Magician Accessory Item Auditor) who is clean.  The +11 int rings are current hot sellers because it the best ring the Jungle Paladin FotM build. Well, any reverse dps fighter build, really.

ePSXe didn't work at least (would open up the game window but I'd just get a black screen). It added a "GameOverlayRenderer.dll.log" file to the directory so it's trying I guess. I'll play around with it a bit and see if I can make any progress.

I was pretty impressed to find I can use it to call the PotBS launcher and have it all work properly once the launcher calls the actual game.

Important thing to note is that you need to have enabled the community beta option under Settings otherwise you don't get the menu option to add non-steam game to your list.

I'm not sure either of them can really gain any sort of market dominance in the PC gaming field.  Looking at something like WoW's "The Armory" makes me curious how the whole datamining ingame stats thing is going to end up overall.  I can't really shake the thought that as per the norm for PC gaming everyone is just going to roll their own on this sort of thing.

I happen to have both versions of Arx Fatalis installed but I have not bothered to check anything else.  I do know that the two do not overlap at all.

If you launch games via that shortcut it will log the time to your account (and also enable the in-game stuff), but no, it can't do per-game tracking for non-Steam games if that's what you were asking. Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 are included for free actually. Really, everything except Team Fortress is included for free. I definitely did not pay for that other stuff a second time last night when I preordered at least.

Either you figure that HL2 and Ep1 are free and that TF2, Portal, and Ep2 are $15 each, or you figure that HL2, Ep1, Ep2, TF2, and Portal are $10 each.  You're spending the same amount of money either way.  And either way it's a pretty good deal given the quoted individual retail prices of everything in there (TF2 $30, Portal $20, Ep2 $30).

TBH for how much I loved Ep1, I'd merrily pay $50 for Ep2 on its own.  To say nothing of TF2.  Those are both slam dunks.  Portal I reserve judgement on until I actually play it, but even without knowing whether it sucks it's worth at least $20-$30.
