AC2 would be kind of interesting.  I haven't played AC1 in long enough, but enjoyed part of it until I had played that part roughly 8 times in succession.  I keep hearing 2 was pretty much the peak of the series.

Other than that? Dunno, I doubt I'll buy much.  I rarely play anything I buy on Steam sales anymore.

XCOM and Dishonred in that order, but probably only if I can get them under $20 since I might not get to them for a while.

I'd think about Sleeping Dogs if it got cheap enough.

As someone who has lived a significant amount in both the US and Europe, I understand where you're coming from...but it's true of far more things than just video games.   Shit, where I am now it is true of virtually every consumer product, real and digital.  Should digital products be exempt and held to a different standard?  I wish it were so, but I doubt it ever will be.  I have programmed myself to look at things in relative terms, but I'll admit it is hard to choke down paying up to 100 dollars on a new AAA title.

What's hard to choke down is when I was in Australia it was cheaper for me to ship games from Amazon UK than to buy them locally or on steam.

Yes, I think they they should be. It's one thing to pay a moderate mark up for being a smaller volume market, a distant market with transport costs and supporting local retail but none of this applies to digital downloads so it just comes across as gouging. Support it and they've got no reason not to keep doing it (even though I think the high price is choking their sales in any case).

That and I did want to finish my Oscuro's overhaul playthough of Oblivion first, but I'm beginning to doubt I'll ever manage that.

I assume there's an element of having/wanting to price it the same as phyiscal copies available in the country when the game is new. I'm not saying you don't have a good point, but presumably you need to make the case for phyiscal console copies of Skyrim for example to also be cheaper than they currently are? No publisher is going to want to undercut themselves in that way I assume.

I'm pretty sure the distributors here (primarily EB games) pressure the publisher to bring the prices up to retail level mark-up. You quite often get to see things like Dark Souls that fly under their radar, have US prices on steam and then suddenly jump over night by 40-60%. But most of these places really only sell console games, their PC offerings are miniscule, so it annoys to be supporting them too.

Then again, thanks to steam, I have a sufficient back-log I also don't care as much if some game isn't available.

Brick and mortar shops need to stop pretending to stock PC games. Maybe put Warcraft out there. You guys fucked up buying PC games at retail so many years ago I barely remember having to drive somewhere to buy a game. Even if I wanted a physical copy I'd just hit up Amazon.

It isn't just PC copies though; if the 360 version is sitting there at $90 no distributor is going to want the PC version to be 1/3 cheaper at release. It seems kind of absurd that putting it on a boat to Australia and sticking a kangaroo on the label adds another $30 onto the price of course, even for physical copies.

I think you aren't allowed to gift a copy to someone who's in another price zone or whatever.  Although if I'm wrong that is indeed a nice loophole.

The problem is you could create a niche business by selling people in other price zones that game for 50% of the difference. Valve doesn't want that.

I don't think Valve cares that much, they don't set the prices and I'm sure they're not interested in policing them. They also understand better than anyone that the trick is in volume of sales. They probably tell the companies that this approach reduces sales and encourages piracy so has a downside but that would be it. But like all mainstream sellers they have to play along with it. I mean EB in Australia is a division of GameStop (dumb name) who I assume have a lot of clout with the producers. Some games apparently have their own region locking but it's hard to know for sure. I assume this is the same reason Amazon games are US only.

Green Man Gaming was happily under-selling steam on the PC version of Demon Souls, even lots of the threads on the steam forums directing people there, and those threads stayed up for quite a bit. Not sure why they could and steam could not, possibly because they fly under the distributors radar.

There are lots of people gifting cross region.  I set up a US steam account myself once to get Civ 5.  There are import stores that cater to us quite well based out of the UK, and steam key resellers and the likes of Greenmangaming that are either just flouting the rules or using some quirk of UK laws.  Its commonplace to see guides on how to use proxies and whatever to set up US accounts for all major media distributers (itunes, netflix etc)We have the options but for me the underlying problem still remains, these (generally eula breaking) backdoor methods still reward the publishers with a sale and really feels like it legitimizes them exploiting the ignorant while grudgingly letting us jump through hoops just for some equality.

It is far more a philosophical thing for me than monetary, and gets me pretty worked up sometimes when I let it.  i don't want to pirate, I want to reward good work, but I don't want an internet with borders.  I'm a part of international communities and want to have the same access to media as everyone else.  I know the excuses these media companies all make, the contractual obligations they have, but at the end of the day they don't excuse what I see as just plain discrimination.  Discrimination that is more easily dismissed because people think entertainment isn't important, and because its based through business and not government.

Is the Skyrim DLC (Dawnguard, not the house building one) worth it? Got the game via GreenManGaming a few weeks back and now I've found a way to turn off all the godsdamn spiders, I'm starting to get into it.

I got it for $10, and I think it is. 2 new factions, new faction quests for those with the story line, a legendary dragon, new achieves, full perk lines for vampires and werewolves, new armor sets, new weapons (dragonbone and crossbows), an undead skeleton horse, a lady who can remake your face for 1000 gold, and some cool new items like rings/necks/etc.

I wouldn't have bought it for more than $10, but at that price it felt like a good value.

I liked DK too, when I was a kid.  Their brand of faux outrage just comes across as immature and silly now.  They aren't a band who've aged well.

I liked Dawnguard, even at full price. Hours/$ value was well in my acceptable range and the content was fun. It makes werewolf/vampire stuff actually worth bothering with too.

I do this all the time. Console games, miniatures, etc. It's just how it is. I sometimes get a friend in the Americas to pick up steam sale shit for me and gift it across. GMG is also good to keep an eye on for digital stuff. Or Amazon US if you have a fake US billing address.

I thought it was pretty great.  It's largely down to a personal taste thing, though, gameplay wise it's basically just a mash up of God of War and Zelda, competently done but not earth shattering.  The big draw for me is the over the top mythology and art style, so if you don't dig the screenshots, you can probably safely skip it.  But I'm having a lot of fun with it.

I personally hated it, but it was due to the controls.

If you don't have a controller (preferably the Xbox 360 one) you might want to skip it.

For reference: I have played the first (with a controller) and it was an acceptable Zelda clone but not much more. Was curious if the sequel broke any new ground or was just more of the same. I guess if it set the world on fire there probably would have been a thread.

Been a really shitty holiday season compared to last year.  The only two games that I really needed to play were Dishonored and XCOM, and I've already wrung every bit of juice I could from those.

II has a bunch of RPG elements (Diablo-style loot, skill trees, etc.) thrown into it which allows you go customize your character a lot more than the first one. That may or may not make it more interesting to you.

Picked up Batman AA and AC, even though it's just adding to my backlog. Still, 75%, maaaaaan!

I also like the "We are sorry. This game is not available in your region" publisher pack. Fuck you Bethesda, fuck you very much.
(background: Bethesda cut an exclusive deal with cenega for eastern european distro, so we can't buy / get gifts of Bethesda games on steam. Have to wait for the shitty localization and buy them in shops... sigh.)

Checking my records, I never bought much stuff on Day 1 of the Holiday sale. It was always Days 2 and 3 that got me.

When I'm in the UK, I use a proxy to get my games (including Steam) and watch TV.  It's how I kept up with Supernatural, Alphas and my DLC stuff.  Now my PS3 lives in London and all it's games are American.  Something got a wee tiny bit buggered up with that, but I'm starting a new American collection of games on my new American console.  I can't stop saying American.  :(

I thought dishonored was absolutely worth the money at $40 when I bought it.  It's a good game, and actually has a fairly decent length if you're an explorer, and does have some replayability.  Think my first run took around 20 hours because I went looking for everything.

No meta-game this year, prices are again higher than what Amazon is offering.  :sad:

I tried it one weekend at work, while I was bored.  It was pretty standard f2p web game fare.

Basically anything that they are both offering, Amazon is offering for less. Hitman Absolution? Steam = $25, Amazon = $20. Darksiders franchise pack? Steam = $13.60, Amazon = $13.10. Doublefine bundle? Steam = $10, Amazon = $7.50.

Edit: Looks like the Steam doublefine bundle comes with Iron Brigade, so it's not exactly a case of Amazon having the better price.

It's a bit like Herzog Zwei. (The devs posted that it was one of their inspirations.) I liked it well enough, and played it for a few months. F2P so you're not out any money for trying.

I think it won't go lower than 50% (too early for 60 or 75, not to mention a base price drop), but it's highly possible that they will put it on sale again in the final couple days (usually reserved for the most wanted titles), if you're still on the fence.

Hold off on xcom. Basically everything is on sale for 25% or more right now as a basic price, then daily deals/flash sales are lower prices if they get one. Xcom will probably hit 30-40% off if they do a sale would be my guess

Worth it. I picked it up the last time it was $30. Long enough to feel you got your money's worth on one playthrough. And if you're a completionist type who wants to get all the achievements, you'll probably play it through 2-3 times because of the different ways you can solve the levels.

How graphically demanding is XCom?  I'm home visiting my parents for Christmas and I'm using the lap top I bought them last year.  It has an i5 430m, 4gb ram, and an ATI Mobility 5470.  I'm able to, barely, play World of Tanks with everything turned off.  Just wondering if I can play XCom a bit in this laptop.

It functioned pretty well on my 8800gtx Q6600.  I'm not sure how that 5470 compares, though.

Fuck.  Kingdoms of Amular is STILL $60.  I enjoyed the demo enough to pay even $20 for it, but theres no way in hell I'm paying full price.  And I don't if the sale price for XCom has gone low enough for me yet.

Amular is on Amazon for $12, but you'd have to install Origin.  Frankly I don't think it's that great of a game and I wouldn't spend anything on it.  It had potential to be a great one-off game, but they never patched it post-launch.

Blah. Was holding out for a deeper DLC discount, but I think RSC is on to me. Base game/package is 66% off, but DLC is still at 50%.  Went ahead and broke down and picked up the F40PH (in honor of the Donner Pass update which is apparently beautiful) and the Baldwin Centipede.

Yeah, it's on sale right now for the same amount as the BF sale, $39, so I'm just waiting to see if it goes lower really.  It's over a year old so I was expecting it to be cheaper than full price when not on sale.   If the PS3 version wasn't getting hosed so badly on patches and DLC I'd just pick it up at gamestop.

Haven't bought anything yet as I still have over 100 games from previous sales that I still haven't played. X-Com may just change that.

On a side note, I saw the BFG version of Doom 3 go up for sale and given I actually liked the original/XPack but have lost my CDs I nearly bought it via Steam. Then I saw Greenmangaming had it for half the Steam sale price.

You might want to try Green Man Gaming.  Its selling for $40.19 right now, plus I believe you can use a code to get an additional 30% off, which would bring it down to around $28.

While it may be annoying, anyone know if it's definitely possible to make 3 transactions using that code? Buying Skyrim comes to ~$28, but the DLC doesn't get the discount if bought at once. If the DLC is bought separately in their own transaction each then the code seems to be usable, I  just don't know if it flags your account or anything

I think it is.  I've never bought anything from Gamefly before but did use D2D a few years ago.  When I went to create a new account, it said the email I used already belonged to a previous account.  I did the password recovery thing and it worked.  It even had my first name in the "Welcome <insert name here>" on the page once I was logged in.

I bought the DA ultimate pack since I never got the expansion, and it includes all the DLC as well.

Haven't seen much this time around that really got me reaching for the credit card. Grabbed Binary Domain, largely because of the radicalthon rk47 did on it. Considered Anno 2070.. but DRM and I dislike Uplay from what I've seen of it since I grabbed Assassin's Creed 2 during the last big sale. Only two games I went into the sale thinking about grabbing were Max Payne 3 and Dishonoured.. but neither is cheap enough to warrant sitting on my hard drive un-played for 5-6 months as I work through my backlog of Steam games while also re-playing old games.

The base game is cheaper at GF and GMG when using coupons. The DLC is cheaper at steam (even after coupons). When buying the game and DLC together it comes out cheaper at steam. The cheapest to get everything is core game at GF and DLC at Steam, it comes to $39 for everything. Normally that is "only" $3 savings - but during holiday game sales that is 1-2 more games  :grin:

The Towns description is pretty useless, there's no good videos up on steam for it, and the forums are filled with controversy talking about how it's not finished and issues.

The tiny blurb (building towns over dungeons and an rpg side) sounds like it could be interesting but it sounds like they aren't even trying to advertise it at all.

Well, Walking Dead got so much praise it just officially became my first purchase this sale.

Everyone keeps saying The Walking Dead game has the saddest ending ever.  I don't mind funny, happy, scary, gory, gruesome, I LOVE creepy, but I don't like sad.  I love the series... all except the sad bits.

I bought it. I liked 3 and this looked like more of the same, which is a good thing.

Yeah,  the game was seriously out of my comfort zone, in many places. But that's part of what makes it so great. I don't think I've ever felt such ownership in a game's story.

Bought it in the summer. Fun. $6 is about right.

I hope AC2 wins the vote, because I want it.

Decided to limit myself to one big game and had to pick between Skyrim and Secret World. Skyrim probably would have been more fun, but Secret World could probably use some support and will be interesting to explore. So many zombie games though.

I would recommend Skyrim so hard for anyone who hasn't bought it yet.  I put in 100+ hours in it and came nowhere near beating it.

I have yet to beat Sleeping Dogs, but it's pretty fun with a decent storyline.  It plays much like GTA or Saint's Row but with more focus on hand to hand.  I bought it on Nix's word and don't regret it, and at sales price it's very much worth it.

edit-Demo was short, but for me it felt like it was a hybrid of Saints Row and Uncharted set in Hong Kong. The melee combat really is pretty good, and pretty brutal (in the demo alone I shoved guys into electrical window fans and left them hanging there, as well as holding a guy in a furnace and burning him alive.... :grin:), additionally, I enjoyed the little bit of writing and voice acting that I saw in the demo and will pick up the game for now.

I picked up Far Cry 3, 25% isn't much of a savings, but not too shabby for a recent game.

I don't think the Steam versions have Starforce. They hold up very well, I was playing the original a bit earlier this year.

Havnig tons of fun playing Endless Space.  Such a decent version of a space 4x game.  Much better than Gal Civ.  My only complaint so far is that the tech tree and what each tech does is confusing as fuck at first.

Apparently when I tried to buy that BL2 Season Pass on GMG, my bank flagged my debit card as stolen. :uhrr: Ended up having to use Paypal that night because I thought the site was just being wonky, but my card got declined at the gas station today and I had to call my bank to get it turned back on. Once that happens I'm gonna be buying TL2 and CK2 since they finally went on sale (again) and then I think I'm done for the holiday since I'll have everything I'm interested in playing.

I just finished it. Played it like crazzy over two days, as if it was a TV show marathon. Loved it, but you gotta be warned, there isn't much game here. Best definition I could come up with is it's a Bioware game without the game (but with all the cinematic, branching story, persistent consequences, etc). The whole thing clocked around 16 hours for me. As I said, it's a really well told zombie story/game. I honestly am so fed up with the presence of kids in dramatic/thriller/horror movies because they make EVERYTHING so predictable, and this makes no difference (if you are like me), since the whole point is more let's protect the kids than let's save myself. I don't like that. But even then, loved the ride, there are a few gut wrenching decisions that the game make sure you won't forget (it compares your choices with all the other players at the end of each chapter) and which make up for the inevitable plot holes here and there.

The ending, as someone else said, is really heavy. I consider it a very good thing in a game of this genre.

It's down to 18€ from 24€ for 3 more days.

You do have to make some gut wrenching decisions.  Too bad you can't make others like "SHOOT ASSHOLE IN THE FUCKING HEAD NOW!" instead of trying to work together and smooth things out...

Does anyone know how Steam calculates its top sellers (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly)? I have a hard time believing they've sold more copies of KoToR 1 and 2 (and Longest Journey for that matter) than they've sold Black Ops 2 or Far Cry 3.

To me 3 and 6 are the only two worth playing. (And yeah it uses uPlay, so stay away if your religion forbids it.)

6 is not 3 - but it is pretty, and tactically/campaign structure-wise it comes closest to matching it I think.

I was having fun in this one, playing in 3D. Then nvidia borked the drivers for some reason, probably to sell the new version. I can revert to the old drivers to play in 3D but...meh. Overlord was probably my 2nd favorite game in 3d behind Tomb Raider, which I won't even play in 2D it was so awesome in 3D.

I really loved the first Overlord but the sequel felt really tedious for some reason I can't quite remember now.

I've missed the flash sale now but has anyone used Gamemaker Studio at all? Is it any good and is it worth getting any of the paid updates?

Also how can you do IOS games with it when you have to do IOS development on a Mac with the SDK (and have purchased an Apple Developer subscription)?

I've heard and read decent things about Gamemaker from people in the industry.  It's good for prototyping fast and simple-ish games, especially if you aren't a programmer.  Also, i'ts been used in some decently known indie games such as Spelunky.

IOS works because it just compiles your product to an IOS compatabile format, but you'd probably still need an apple developer subscription and run it on a mac, but your main development can probably just work on windows if you want.

I've got it, it's pretty good for where I'm at personally (pretty basic knowledge of everything game-ish, not enough to code anything in C from scratch but enough to know the basic form of how it would work if I could).  It's mostly just for 2d stuff, but really strikes a nice balance between flexibility and user friendliness, in my opinion.  There's a gimped free version on Steam if you want to check it out (the software's actually classified as "free to play"), you can run through a tutorial or two and it should give you the gist of it. 

I've just got the basic $50.00 package, which just takes the limitations of the free version off, and it does everything I was looking for.

Civ V Game of the Year edition is available as an upgrade too. So if you own the basic one, switching to GOTY version costs 2.5$ at the moment. Mostly worth it for those who don't own the DLCs yet.

That's cool.  It's listed as $5 for the upgrade here though.

Made out relatively unscathed with just FTL.  Great game.  Want to try BL2 and Dishonored but they need to drop a bit more.

Some day I'll get over my hatred of GFWL and get Arkham City.

I'll start buying GFWL and Origin games as soon as I've finished everything on my steam backlog. Should happen *real soon now*.

I did Two Worlds 2, and lucky that was only $7.50 because I didn't really like it.  Also got Awesomenauts, which is fairly fun.  Seems like DOTA2 or LoL gateway drug.  Someone gave me DOTA2 key, so I'll be checking that out.

But my prize was Morrowind for $5.  Haven't played it in maybe 7-8 years.  I installed the 3.0 overhaul, and wow.  They don't make games like this anymore. 

Morrowind has a special place in my heart.  I think I've just played it to death, because I can't get going on any recent attemps.  Still haven't beat it.

I picked up Skyrim DLC, Walking Dead (for when I want to get depressed), and Sleeping Dogs (because Valve messed up and had it for $.50).  I'm OK with this.  I might actually play some of it.

Uuuugh. My love of Anno has overcome my hatred of UbiAIDS. Got the expansion pack for $11 or whatever it was. I have really been itching for a city builder and just barely avoided buying towns. I wish prison architect would hurry up and come out.
