Title: Christmas 2012 Post by: Viin on November 19, 2012, 01:36:08 PM Asking for or giving anything cool? Post it here! We all need ideas.
*** I got a micro RC helicopter for my birthday a couple of weeks ago: http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/msr-x-rtf-BLH3200 (http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/msr-x-rtf-BLH3200) (beginner version: http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/blade-mcx2-rtf-EFLH2400 (http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/blade-mcx2-rtf-EFLH2400)) I asked for Rocksmith (http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/en-US/home/)and a new down coat (http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/mens-jackets-vests/mens-nuptse-2-jacket.html). What to get the wife? No idea. Need something for a friend/co-worker/3rd-cousin? Some interesting stuff here: http://www.uncommongoods.com/ Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Paelos on November 19, 2012, 01:45:26 PM I'm getting these for my dad:

Christmas season shouldn't start until at least after Thanksgiving in the US. How will we know what to buy on Black Friday if we don't talk about it now?!? Thinking about getting one of these for someone: ZOMM Wireless Leash, Bluetooth Speakerphone, and Personal Safety Device (http://www.amazon.com/ZOMM-Wireless-Bluetooth-Speakerphone-Black/dp/B003N3J6BU) Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Engels on November 19, 2012, 02:01:03 PM Cool concept, but an always-on Bluetooth device may be murder on your battery life. May wanna check reviews.
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: ghost on November 19, 2012, 03:13:47 PM I'm personally looking for any kind of Le Creuset pots and pans for cooking.
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Sky on November 19, 2012, 03:14:09 PM I asked for Rocksmith (http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/en-US/home/) Right on, me too. Only thing I'm asking for, really. But I was nagged to make a list anyway.Cowboy Songs (Guitar Chord Songbooks) by Hal Leonard Corp. THREE CHORD SONGS: GUITAR CHORD SONGBOOK (Guitar Chord Songbooks) by Hal Leonard Corp. Backpackers Songbook by Hal Leonard Corp. Classic Rock: Drum Play-Along Volume 2 by Hal Leonard Corp. Funk: Drum Play-Along Volume 5 (Hal Leonard Drum Play-Along) by Hal Leonard Corp. Introduction to Gypsy Jazz Guitar: John Jorgenson (Book/CD/DVD Set) by John Jorgenson Ultimate Bass Play-Along Rush: Authentic Bass TAB (Book & CD) by Rush Descent: Journeys in The Dark Second Edition Board Game by Fantasy Flight Games Country (Guitar Chord Songbook) by Hal Leonard Corp. Mostly stuff for campfire jams with the neighbors. I have a buddy who plays a ton of Rush on the drums, so I wouldn't mind practicing it up on the bass a bit (he nags me every time I see him). And now that my basement is waterproofed, a few tracks to play drums with. I should probably ask for a decent low end ribbon mic or something. I already bought myself about a thousand minis for xmas. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Sky on November 19, 2012, 03:16:28 PM I'm personally looking for any kind of Le Creuset pots and pans for cooking. I have the cheapo La Tramontina or whatever that VDL was saying were garbage. Had them for years and they're still awesome. But with your budget, yeah, get the real deal :) Actually I'm well-stocked for cast iron and porcelain-coated iron pots and pans, I need to fill out my regular pots and pans now that I have a real stove.Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Viin on November 19, 2012, 03:29:56 PM I'm personally looking for any kind of Le Creuset pots and pans for cooking. Crate and Barrel has some nice not-as-expensive cast iron pans like this one: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/mario-batali-red-skillet/f44358 Perfect for making one or two eggs in the morning. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Hawkbit on November 19, 2012, 07:44:22 PM I'm personally looking for any kind of Le Creuset pots and pans for cooking. My wife had a few pieces before we were married, and they're as awesome now as they were when we met fifteen years ago. Take care of them, they'll take care of you. Will pile up donations and head to the Boxing Week sales (Canada's Black Friday). No idea what I actually want.
Sadly, at this point, the thing I'm most concerned with is having three HDMI inputs. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Rasix on November 20, 2012, 10:31:13 AM I just have no idea what I want at all. My family is going to hate me or just buy me a bunch of clothes I don't want or need ("A heavy sweater! Great, I'll wear this twice."). As usual, my son's haul will make my childhood look like I was a tiny Tim (not the guy with the ukelele).
I imagine I'll be spending Christmas watching my nephews play their Wii U or new-handheld-whatever, while my son gets frustrated that his cousins won't play with him. Food will be good though. Better not be ham. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Shannow on November 20, 2012, 11:28:52 AM I have one of those (a son who gets way too much)...I'm wondering what the heck to buy him this year. I think I've finally convinced my wife to stop buying him a bunch of presents he will never use but things he WILL actually use is actually a fairly short list. At this stage think Ill take the money we usually spend and buy him a HD TV for his xbox....any other suggestions for a 12 year old (who has all the consoles, phones, games etc that he needs)
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Signe on November 20, 2012, 11:32:47 AM Ham!

How about a trip to some place during Spring Break and a couple of gadgets to support the trip? (Surfing in Hawaii?) Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Segoris on November 20, 2012, 12:19:54 PM any other suggestions for a 12 year old (who has all the consoles, phones, games etc that he needs) The HD TV is as good idea. Let's face it, would you want to play on a non HDTV at this point if you were him? Besides that, this is the only thing which comes to mind Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Strazos on November 20, 2012, 01:31:46 PM Pretty sure I'm not getting much of anything...you know, being in Africa and all. :oh_i_see:

It is way too early for this thread, though, don't you people know it isn't time for thinking about Christmas until after my birthday? (And no, I don't care if that only leaves just under two weeks until Christmas!) I hate this season. This started in my area on MOTHERFUCKING MONDAY. What the shit, people. Also, Rocksmith for my dad and a combination of RPGs for my mom. Not sure about which yet though. I always find Christmas interesting because of the role reversal I have with my parents. I used to get them clothes as a kid and they used to get me video games. Now it's the other way around . :drillf: I'm at a loss for what to get the girlfriend. I got her an iPad 2 last year so the bar is set a little high. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: RhyssaFireheart on November 21, 2012, 11:54:18 AM I'll probably get the husband some flavor of Lego Technics to build. As for something to request for myself.. no clue. I don't really want for anything so books are always a good choice.
Although, maybe I can convince the husband to just keep saving money so we can replace the TV downstairs. One of the circuit boards is going bad so we have to run the sound through the sound system now, plus the remote won't turn it on/off any longer (have to push the button on the front) AND I just discovered that we can't change it to watch DVDs or play games any more. One freaking little circuit board on the front on the damn thing and it's almost crippled. The upside is that 70" LCDs are coming down some since the 80"s were released. This is what we are replacing. This is what we are looking at. http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeEntertainment/LCDTV/Models/LC70LE745U.aspx but without the 3D BS. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Viin on November 24, 2012, 12:22:46 PM It makes me miss Carl Sagan. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Signe on November 24, 2012, 12:52:40 PM I do read him. All the time. He would even be my favourite atheist if he'd only admit to it. Bill Nye ALMOST admits it... or has he? I don't remember. In my little world of ideology, Richard Dawkins is more badass than both of them. Still miss Carl Sagan, though. He was cute.
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Signe on November 26, 2012, 09:13:31 AM I got Rocksmith for both my nephews... thank you for the recommendation, f13... zombie doll and sock monkey for my nephew's babies, Cthulhu decorations for my brother in law and dalek ones for one nephew and a batman light thingy signal for another, a very cool blue bird night light for my sister based on Lum's suggestion... geez, for nearly everything I was inspired by f13! Thanks!
Oh and for my flatmate, I'm leaving behind a pound of really good streaky bacon... also inspired by f13. I wish I could wrap up Calapine and deposit her under my nephew's tree. They would SO hit it off! Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Sky on November 26, 2012, 11:51:23 AM So my fiancee's mom loved my tv and wants one the same size. On the other hand I have no fucking idea what to put on my gift list as I don't really want anything. So I put a bunch of stupid shit up there like http://www.amazon.com/Gurren-Lagann-Core-Drill-Necklace/dp/B0027BOD94 and some other "neat" stuff like Ronald Jenkees CDs. I don't know when it happened but at some point I either ran out of things I wanted or they stopped making things worth wanting. Welcome to my world. For the last 6-7 years there really hasn't been anything I've "wanted" or put on a list for anyone. It's just... I feel like I've got all of what I need now so there's no need to accumulate more stuff when what I have still works just fine (like my 4 year old desktop, 6 and 9 year old MP3 players, etc).Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Viin on November 26, 2012, 07:33:15 PM I'm with you guys, I don't really want anything. Well, there are things I want, but they are a little pricey (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-32132445001001-Speedmaster-Co-Axial-Chronograh/dp/B0019VGDGE) to ask for as a Christmas present.
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Samwise on November 26, 2012, 08:07:22 PM I've got that tea robot thing on my Amazon wishlist -- I can't quite see my way clear to buying a gadget like that for myself, but I'd be super excited if my whole family decided to pool their funds and get me one as a present.
Getting a Roku for my mom and brother. Those things are stupid cheap these days, and if they're as awesome as I've heard I think they'll get a lot of use out of it. My dad's impossible to shop for, but I saw this flipbookit thing (http://flipbookit.bigcartel.com/product/flipbookit) on Kickstarter a couple of months ago and pegged it as something that he might like, especially if I include some custom content with it. We'll see how it goes over. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: schild on November 26, 2012, 08:13:04 PM GREAT SKY'S GETTING A NEW TV.

Usually not even an acknowledgement on the years I need to ship since I'm not there in person) and one of my nephews has aged out of the gifting (I get them each a theme ornament every Christmas, so by the time they're 18 they'll have that many ornaments of that kind, e.g. angels or snowmen or nutcrackers, etc.) and I only have 1 niece and 3 other nephews.
I suppose I'll get the husband something Lego related, he just needs to tell me what it will be if he doesn't buy it himself again this year and tell me thanks for the wonderful gift. :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Draegan on November 30, 2012, 06:48:10 AM I've got some extra cash to burn and I think I'm going to buy myself a Lenovo Yoga because Ghost got me thinking about it. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: schild on December 03, 2012, 10:31:27 AM Ticket to Ride is certainly easier than Monopoly. Power Grid is about the same level as Monopoly if people want to think.
Monopoly is just the ghetto of gaming. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Paelos on December 03, 2012, 10:45:15 AM I've played Ticket to Ride. I find it to be not fun. Again, different strokes.

Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: cmlancas on December 03, 2012, 11:31:47 AM Excellent. I already play that way anyway. My favorite one was G. W. Bush and playing AIDS.

I'll just be over here in my gaming ghetto, apparently offending people with my choice of fun. :oh_i_see: Have you tried Carcassone? It's about the closest gateway drug to becoming a boardgame geek there is. I've slowly gotten my family into TTR, Carcassone and Catan. I think I'm getting my kid Castle Panic for Christmas, looks fun. You know what games sucks and I can't stand playing it? Clue. Especially the newer version with the hours rules and all that bullshit. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Samwise on December 03, 2012, 01:48:19 PM Settlers of Catan is the game I'd put up as an example of a Monopoly-style "acquire and build" game done well. It's easier and more accessible than Monopoly in many respects, because you don't have as much crap to keep track of. At the same time, though, there are more opportunities to make interesting choices, which makes it more of a game IMO.
That said, I can understand how if you've made a family tradition out of playing Chutes and Ladders, it's less about the game itself and more about the fact that you're sitting around a table doing the thing you always do. I think it's kind of a shame that the "classic" family board games are mostly terrible as far as games go, though. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Paelos on December 03, 2012, 01:56:53 PM I agree with you Samwise, but as soon as I said the word "Settlers of..." my family would be off to go get more wine and play with the puzzle in the corner.
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Hawkbit on December 03, 2012, 02:13:58 PM My 7 year old has won almost every game of Carcassone we play with her, and we don't go easy on her with games anymore.
If you've played Catan, they're both good starts to being boardgame geeks. Where Catan requires a long play strategy that builds across the whole game, Carcassone can be played on a per-turn basis with much less concentration on the long game. Especially if you play sans farmers. If they just don't get it, then that's cool. But if you know someone with Carcassone, I'd see if you can borrow it to try. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Sky on December 03, 2012, 03:44:17 PM I was surprised my football & beer buddy sat through an entire tutorial I gave him on Bloodbowl. Sometimes people just dig the theme enough to get hooked by the mechanics.

The wife got her bonus this year already: an email that said they're not giving out bonuses. First year in 10 years as a lawyer she's not getting a bonus, which is pretty fucked up. Not that we ever rely on them, but she usually gets a couple k to throw around at Christmas. Hell, even as a law clerk she was getting $500. She's pretty bummed right now. Sad part is that their business nearly doubled this year. It's not really dampening our spirits though, maybe just a few less presents this year. God bless us everyone, and all that jazz. Also, count my workgroup in the 'no bonus despite good departmental results' people. Some deeply boneheaded decisions way above our level managed to fuck that one right in the ass. Things are pretty much done on this side of the world. Notable presents include a new wallet (real leather!) from the SO and a sick alarm clock radio projector thing from my parents. Ate a lot and drank a bit too much wine. Waited 20 minutes for a taxi in -10C wearing shoes with shitty thin soles, freezing my toes like a boss. Back home now, surfing the net and sipping coffee with the SO. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: ghost on December 24, 2012, 03:11:32 PM Merry Christmas everyone. :awesome_for_real:

Think of it this way: 1. The 720 will likely launch Sept 2013, so you've got at least nine months of awesome gaming till then. 2. You don't really want to buy the 720 at release. see RROD. 3. The plethora of great, cheap games for the 360 will get almost no better than right now. If I had an extra $100 to spend I was going to get my dad a 360. He'll have to wait till his bday, I suppose. On the 11th we had to put our little pug, Muggsy, down cause of brain tumors eating her skull and all. Very sad, lots of crying. But we're a family that bounces back and have a very warped sense of humor, but ma gets sniffly and teary eyed at the drop of a hat too.
Anywho, fast forward to Christmas morning: I got my mum a rabbit fur hat she's been wanting for a while and she pulls it out of the package and is all exclaiming about it and being the asshole I am "Now your ears wont get cold when you take the dog out. (dramatic pause). Oh wait..." Fortunately I had the camera so I caught her laughing her ass off while getting sniffly sad at the same time. For my part, this one was so fucking stressy for no reason whatsoever and just had drama all over the shop. It's all done now and I'm just going to try and enjoy my week off. Fuck Sake, I hate this season. Sorry to be a grinch. Well like I said. I was coldcocked fired from work with no net whatsoever just before (so couldnt buy people what I wanted). Then the usual family drama, along with my own at home. Along with recent inlaw drama (divorce, etc.) But we all have to pretend everything is hunky dory at the party we threw. At said party my nephew smashes his ocular bone against the table, running around like 5yr. olds do. Then my uncle dies of "Liver Cancer" on Saturday. (crazy bastard probably timed it like that on purpose)... but oh hai, he's from the Bahamas and since everyone (including myself now) is poor no one can afford the funeral really, let alone to fly to the Bahamas to attend it. :oh_i_see: I will say the xmas itself was rather nice. It all came together on the holiday. But like I said, it's really just a facade when you see so much b.s. going on around you. And some people can't even be arsed into treating people kindly even on the holidays. (see inlaws, boss, etc.) There are silver-linings to all of my complaints too though, but still. I mean damn. Really? edit: oh wait, my landlord wants us out early now (he has a buyer for the place) so now we've got to scramble to find a place. Really sorry for everyone who had such a horrible xmas. I don't really like xmas although this year wasn't quite as awful as the past two. I got to see my new-ish little niece and nephew. The boy is going to be a handful. Stoner material, I think. The tiny wee girl is way too smart for being 16 months old. She frightens me a little. They are GORGEOUS, though. Saw my older nephews, too, and they seemed to have a nice time. Gave people some pressies this year for a change. I don't usually do xmas, except to visit my sister for a bit. Now that I live with her, there's no one to visit! Still, it was better than my average xmas. Majorly disappointed that the world didn't assplode before all the holiday hoopla, though. That would have been good.

Its going to be so hard going back to work, though.
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Ghambit on December 26, 2012, 12:14:16 PM Like I said, there are silver-linings, which is what xmas is all about. I get to be home for once and catch up on things that I've neglected, my family being one of them. My nephew almost killing himself on the corner of a table might get him to slow down some, and he's fine. Inlaw's divorce was sorely needed years ago (before they had a child). And now my bro-in-law can spread his wings a little (he's already lost 20lbs.) My uncle was suffering for a while and was mostly an ingrate alcoholic... but he was one of those semi-famous "most interesting man in the world" types and his funeral will likely draw throngs of people together who haven't been together in a while - all this is done very N'Orleans style (parties, wakes, etc.). My uncle hated formalities, church, etc... so much drink and carryin' on is required. The place I live is frakkin awesome, but a bit pricey and the neighbors turned out to be semi-deaf rocker-douches who care not how much noise they make... so instead of just getting out of the lease normally we now have an option that'll net us some cash for the lease breakage.
And now, I'm gonna take my little 12 yr. old brother to the hobby-store and then the comic/game store for the 1st time. Never been able to do that before really. Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: RhyssaFireheart on December 26, 2012, 03:34:35 PM Merry Late Christmas or whatever to all you folks!
Just got home a bit ago from mom's house. Her place down near St. Louis missed getting a foot of snow dumped on it by a few miles, which made us glad since we had to drive home today. It was windy as fuck driving back north though. Spent some good time with mom and actually got to see my asshole brother for the first time in about 4 years. He couldn't be bothered to see us when we were down 2 years ago. Had Christmas eve at the older brother's place. SiL is a good cook for all that she can be a bit whacky other times. Plus she has a great Christmas morning breakfast that we go to which I love. Got some nice gifts. Generic candle set from the asshole bro, gift card from the youngest, and from the older bro a box of Frangos and some photos of my niece and all my nephews together, which was really cool. It's neat looking at the 5 of them and seeing the family resemblance in a photo. Oh, and mom gave us a bunch of fruit to make up for helping us blow our diets with cookies and chocolate, which I loved. I was surprised that the niece and nephews apparently really do like the themed ornaments I get them each year and my niece was upset when she thought this was her last year of getting an ornament. I said that no, she still gets one next year. I stop giving them after the year they turn 18 (she was 17 back in August). And my youngest nephew was so excited about the sparkly race car ornament, he thought it was a toy to play with, lol. I didn't give out any other gifts really, except for the husband and I fixing mom's back deck. The "quality" union carpenter who'd built the deck 7 years ago only used one nail on the top of the bottom railing to hold it in place. Of course, over time, the railing have started to fall down and one railing was entirely off, so we got out the ladder and fixed things so it's safe to go out on the deck. And I spent an hour flattening nail pops because the asshole carpenter didn't use screws like he was supposed to. Still, mom was thrilled (since we didn't tell her we were going to do the repair and hadn't even known about it until we got down there) and said it was the best present she'd gotten. Every 12 hours or so, someone new would catch the plague just as the first Still waiting on the recovery bit.Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Signe on December 28, 2012, 07:32:43 AM My sister and brother in law had this flu or whatever it is for ages. Brni is just getting over his and it's been three weeks. However, I didn't get it. I can only surmise that it's because I was very very good this xmas. In fact, I stayed perfectly still and will remain perfectly still until January 6.
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Ginaz on December 28, 2012, 11:16:41 AM Good lord, so many horror stories. :ye_gods: I guess no one wants to hear that I've been off work since 29 Nov., don't go back until 14 Jan. and had my flight home paid for. :awesome_for_real: Granted, I was off the first 2 weeks because I had my gallbladder removed, but its still been pretty awesome. Its going to be so hard going back to work, though. Fuck me! I must have jinxed myself posting that. Flying home has been fucking nightmare. Missed flight yesterday due to plane breaking down in Toronto. Missed plane this morning in Toronto due to over booking. Missed second plane in Toronto due them changing the gate number with me waiting at the gate number that was printed on my ticket. I have another ticket for a flight at 4pm so let's see if this works. :argh: Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Yegolev on December 28, 2012, 12:55:11 PM Recommend staying out of Toronto. :why_so_serious:
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Surlyboi on December 28, 2012, 03:18:49 PM Just flew back into New York ahead of the bitchy storm front that flooded parts of Palo Alto and dropped a shit ton of rain on the in-laws in the central valley. Now I get to experience it again in the form of snow. In the grand scheme of things, not bad but I should've stayed in California a few more days. :-P
Title: Re: Christmas 2012 Post by: Pezzle on December 28, 2012, 09:55:04 PM This year holiday season has been lots of partying. It has gone well! I have been watching Farscape again because it is awesome. It is entirely possible I lost my wallet last night, or had it stolen. But, crackers don't matter!
