Title: Movember @ F13 - Moustache Season is Over! $4745 Raised! Post by: murdoc on October 31, 2011, 07:49:59 AM Current Total Raised by Team F13 (US & Canada): $4,745
I'm starting this at pretty much the last minute, so it may be difficult to get going, but I'd like to hold a F13 Movember challenge. For those that don't know, "During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer. On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts. Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health." It's a good cause, but it's an even better excuse to answer the age old question of "what would I look like with a moustache". If I could get enough guys here willing to grow a moustache for a month, I'd be willing to put up a couple Amazon gift cards as a prize for the most money raised and of course, the best moustache grown this month. If you want to participate, let me know in this thead and go to http://movember.com and register. With enough people I'll start a F13 group up to keep track. Rules are: Must start with a clean-shaven face on November 1st. No beards No goatees. The Challengers! Team Canada: Murdoc: http://mobro.co/swiggy Nix: http://MoBro.co/jfreeland Team America: MuffinMan: http://mobro.co/muffin ghost: http://mobro.co/Ghost Abagadro: http://mobro.co/bfr Team International: lamaros: http://mobro.co/plaz DraconianOne: http://mobro.co/traildragon Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on October 31, 2011, 08:13:15 AM I'm ready to grow the shittiest moustache of all time.
http://mobro.co/muffin Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Engels on October 31, 2011, 08:21:38 AM This is cool. At the same time, there's a moment of realization about one's age, and nothing brings that home like the gaming forum of your 20s raising awareness about prostrate cancer. Thanks for reminding me how danged old I'm getting! Now were's the danged self-test kit? Oh, wait, that's right, there isn't one. First person who invents that is going to be a billionaire overnight.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Bunk on October 31, 2011, 09:08:19 AM I'd totally consider it, but were I to shave my moustache off completely, I wouldn't grow enough back in one month to notice it! Plus I just don't think I'm willing to restart the goatee.
That being said, I heartily support anyone willing to do it. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on October 31, 2011, 09:23:13 AM I really want to do this, but I'm not sure that my boss would like that and it I'm sure I'll look like an idiot. Never grown a mustache, so I'm sure it'll come out nasty, and I look like I'm 19.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: schild on October 31, 2011, 09:26:45 AM I hate Movember and this weird societal obsession with beards and mustaches. And I double-super-hate the girls who have gotten on board with it and rock fake mustaches. Just throwing in my opinion. Yes, before you ask, I probably hate the whole thing because I'm as hairy as Robin Williams and struggle daily with looking like a Movember contestant.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Merusk on October 31, 2011, 09:31:11 AM I really want to do this, but I'm not sure that my boss would like that and it I'm sure I'll look like an idiot. Never grown a mustache, so I'm sure it'll come out nasty, and I look like I'm 19. Don't worry about your boss, this is a great excuse if you're wanting to try. I grew my beard because I, too, looked about 10 years younger than I am without it. I don't do Movember just because it took me 2 months to grow it in the first place. Hooray for French & Native American heritage. :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on October 31, 2011, 09:35:06 AM I wouldn't worry about looking like an idiot, at least here. I'll set that bar awfully low with my failstache.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: murdoc on October 31, 2011, 09:38:22 AM Yeah, worried about looking like an idiot is a poor excuse. The worse it looks, the better it is. Guys like Schild who grow a moustache overnight don't need an excuse like Movember.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: DraconianOne on October 31, 2011, 10:18:18 AM I fully endorse Movember because of what's raising awareness of.
Also, there are sponsored MoRunning 10k events towards the end of the month in many major cities for those who occasionally run. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Surlyboi on October 31, 2011, 10:20:47 AM I've done this the last few Novembers and maybe after the wedding I'll hop on the bandwagon again.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Ingmar on October 31, 2011, 12:01:20 PM This is cool but I really don't want to shave the goatee and start over, sans goatee. I'll end up looking a little too much like Rowsdower (sans hockey hair).
(http://images.wikia.com/mst3k/images/c/c6/Rowsdower.jpg) Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: 01101010 on October 31, 2011, 12:03:28 PM Fu Manchu or nothing for me. Too bad it would take me the better part of a decade to have my facial hair grow that long.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Sky on October 31, 2011, 12:03:59 PM This is cool but I really don't want to shave the goatee and start over, sans goatee. I'll end up looking a little too much like Rowsdower (sans hockey hair). You could grow a bonus mullet!(http://images.wikia.com/mst3k/images/c/c6/Rowsdower.jpg) Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on October 31, 2011, 12:10:04 PM I never knew f13 was so vain. You probably think this post is about you.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Sand on October 31, 2011, 02:17:46 PM It's a good cause, but it's an even better excuse to answer the age old question of "what would I look like with a moustache". Im pretty sure I would look just like this. Now were's the danged self-test kit? Oh, wait, that's right, there isn't one. First person who invents that is going to be a billionaire overnight. How hard could it be?Step 1: Lube finger  Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on October 31, 2011, 02:25:35 PM My mustache looks like Ron Swanson when I try to grow it out.
(http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aoltv.com/media/2011/01/ron-swanson-250fp011911.jpg) Edit: And also, I'm all in. http://mobro.co/Ghost Some of you guys are in Austin. We should go to the gala.  Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Furiously on October 31, 2011, 03:44:38 PM This is cool but I really don't want to shave the goatee and start over, sans goatee. I'll end up looking a little too much like Rowsdower (sans hockey hair). You could grow a bonus mullet!(http://images.wikia.com/mst3k/images/c/c6/Rowsdower.jpg) I'm Rowsdower... Zap Rowsdower. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Strazos on October 31, 2011, 06:05:36 PM Hmmm...while I know my 'stache will come out terribly, it might be amusing to give it a shot...even if it means I have to shave every day.
I'll have to think about it, as there's a good chance I'll be moving back into a public-facing position, and I don't think having halfway-there facial hair will really work, prostate cancer awareness or not. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on October 31, 2011, 09:05:58 PM What, there's a stache that doesn't come out terribly?
You should do it. I'm probably giving up having sex ever again, so just think about the opportunity to further our anti-prostate cancer cause! (actually, I'm just looking for a reason to grow a sweet stache ). Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on October 31, 2011, 11:03:55 PM Fuck it, I'm in! (http://MoBro.co/nixel)
Also, team has been started as "f13.net". Someone might want to come up with a fancy Movember logo for us. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on October 31, 2011, 11:17:13 PM Hmm I click "Join My Team" and it just loads my profile.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: murdoc on November 01, 2011, 06:58:56 AM Awesome, thanks for setting up the team, Nix.
I had no problems joining the team, hopefully it's not a Canada/US thing. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on November 01, 2011, 07:04:51 AM Yeah, that's weird if it is.
Muffin, did you log in before trying to join the team? I noticed their website has issues if you don't log in and then try to do stuff. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: murdoc on November 01, 2011, 07:08:19 AM Their website is a piece of crap, unfortunately.
Updated the OP with the 'challengers'. Only 4 so far, but I'm putting a $50 Amazon gift card on the line to whoever gets us the most donations. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on November 01, 2011, 07:26:20 AM Yea, I'm logged in as a I try to join the team. It won't let me upload any photos, either.
Their website seems to really be shitting the bed this morning. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on November 01, 2011, 08:54:36 AM Probably because it's day 1 and people are now hearing about it from all the Facebook/Twitter spam. I'd give it some time.
Up to $40 already. Time to spam the work group email. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 01, 2011, 10:50:17 AM I can't even get the team to come up when I type in the "join team" box. Is there a way to do invites on the other end?
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on November 01, 2011, 11:37:54 AM I can't even get the team to come up when I type in the "join team" box. Is there a way to do invites on the other end? I've been looking, but haven't been able to find an option. I'll keep checking though. This should be added to the OP: Quote HOW DO I DONATE TO A TEAM? 1. Click on Donate 2. Click on Team 3. Search for f13.net 4. Enter your personal and payment information 5. Nominate whether you would like the donation to be a general team donation or be split evenly among team members. Edit: Sent off an email to see if it's possible to invite and asking if the teams are region specific. It's very likely given you get a national ranking. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 01, 2011, 01:00:40 PM So Muffin and I will have to do an F13 Tejas version possibly then.
Edit: Yeah, you guys are all in the Canadian version, so I bet they won't let the guys from the States join up. They must not want us bad element Texans forming up with you Canadians. It could lead to the spread of Communism or somesuch. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on November 01, 2011, 01:13:19 PM Seems like that's the case. Looking around I see that any "International" term always links to multiple national sites for Movember. That sucks, but I guess it makes sense for making sure donations go to a charity in the country of choice.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on November 01, 2011, 01:20:36 PM At least I got a picture to upload now. I think there may be a size limit that they don't tell you about.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 01, 2011, 01:25:48 PM I will try and start a USA F13 team.
What should I name it? Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on November 01, 2011, 01:29:16 PM f13.net - Freedom Chapter? Amurican Team?
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 01, 2011, 01:29:51 PM I like Freedom Chapter
Yeah, so I signed us up as the f13.net Freedom Chapter. That sounds about right. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: murdoc on November 01, 2011, 02:05:19 PM You US guys can try this link and see if it helps to get us all registered on the same team:
https://www.movember.com/ca/register/details/team_id/327320 Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 01, 2011, 02:29:05 PM I automatically boots me into the US version. I think we're stuck.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on November 01, 2011, 02:33:24 PM We'll never join you, Canadians!
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 01, 2011, 04:24:22 PM We need some more Muricans to even it up.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Zetleft on November 01, 2011, 04:36:28 PM I'll probably join up when I get home tonight.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: lamaros on November 02, 2011, 01:22:10 AM I'm doing this in Aus. http://mobro.co/plaz
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 02, 2011, 08:37:02 AM Okay, looks like our evil Canadian counterparts are kicking the butts of our loyal American freedom fighters. We gotta pick it up, boys.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Abagadro on November 02, 2011, 09:58:16 AM I didn't shave the mustache this morning in anticipation of signing up.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Strazos on November 02, 2011, 10:40:59 AM I have to shave tomorrow morning for a huge exam, so I'll sign up that afternoon if I'm not dangerously depressed that evening.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: MuffinMan on November 02, 2011, 10:48:58 AM The only donation offer I've received is one to not grow a moustache.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 02, 2011, 11:39:35 AM My wife has already informed me that I'm getting no action until I shave it. :awesome_for_real:
She also offered to donate for not growing one as well, but that would be too easy. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: murdoc on November 02, 2011, 12:33:45 PM I shaved off my beard in preparation so my wife took that as a small victory.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on November 02, 2011, 01:40:37 PM I shaved off my beard in preparation so my wife took that as a small victory. We need to harass the known Canadians on the site to build our team. I got one of my co-workers to join up. Maybe we should rename our team to f13.net Socialist Chapter Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 02, 2011, 01:44:03 PM Maybe we should rename our team to f13.net Socialist Chapter We would shoot you for that :awesome_for_real:. Have you seen how many Texans there are on our team? It's almost 70%. That means guns.....lots and lots of guns. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Abagadro on November 02, 2011, 03:42:34 PM When you solicit or receive donations is the name of the team part of it or displayed? I don't particularly want to advertise my participation here to colleagues if I hit them up for money as then they will see all the dumb shit I've posted over the years. In the alternative can the team name be changed to something a bit more generic?
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on November 02, 2011, 04:27:29 PM We would shoot you for that :awesome_for_real:. Have you seen how many Texans there are on our team? It's almost 70%. That means guns.....lots and lots of guns. Haha, get shooting! This might be a bad idea for the reason Ab posted. Was just about to send out an e-mail and realized it might not go over well being labelled as the Socialist Chapter. We could just go with plain old f13 Canada and f13 US. Website isn't apparent, shows we're together and no one will mistake who they're donating to. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Abagadro on November 02, 2011, 04:51:52 PM That is sorta what I am talking about. Can still have f13 but don't really want it directed right here.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 02, 2011, 06:12:37 PM It seems like a pretty tame adventure, but I can understand your concern.
Pick a name and I'll change the US version. Edit: I just switched it to "Team Ron Swanson" for you, Ab! Join up. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Abagadro on November 02, 2011, 06:30:11 PM I would have gone with Meat Tornado, but that will work! :awesome_for_real:
EDIT: I'm now in. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 02, 2011, 06:40:57 PM Rock on. Now time to kick some canuck.
Edit: Okay peeps. I'm carrying the team here. You guys need to get out and pound the pavement here. :oh_i_see: Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Abagadro on November 02, 2011, 07:49:13 PM What's the difference between them donating to me vs. donating to my team? Are donations to me included in the team totals? Yup, all your donations are included in the team totals. I'm thinking that the team donations are more for celebrity teams. A lot of the NHL teams up here are running Movember teams. I can't believe neither team is named 'Bat Country'. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: NiX on November 03, 2011, 07:27:05 AM Yup, all your donations are included in the team totals. We're now F13.CANADA Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: murdoc on November 03, 2011, 07:34:44 AM I updated the OP with links to your profiles, let me know if you don't want them up for any reason.

Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: Abagadro on November 03, 2011, 08:04:57 AM I think Team Ron Swanson is perfect.
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge Post by: ghost on November 03, 2011, 08:09:33 AM Fair enough. Unless I hear more cries from the team members I will leave it as such. Now if Trippy could be bothered to sign up..........

I've updated the OP with the names of the F13ers partaking in the challenge and the links to their page. If I've missed you let me know. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge - Raising money for Prostate Cancer Research Post by: NiX on November 04, 2011, 06:54:01 AM Hope you don't mind Murdoc, but I updated your original post. Thought the thread title could use a bit more clarity to try and get people who don't know what Movember is into the thread so we can get more donations. Added Ab's link too.
You might want to have a running total at the top for the two teams combined, which is $985 right now. We're almost at $1000 and it's only the 4th! I'm also willing to update the OP for you if you want. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge - Raising money for Prostate Cancer Research Post by: Abagadro on November 04, 2011, 11:17:44 AM I've been contemplating having a sorta business card I could hand out when I get the question (or more likely a quizzical look) that had some info and my homepage address on it. Anyone enterprising and graphically gifted want to take a shot at designing one for me?
Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge - Raising money for Prostate Cancer Research Post by: MuffinMan on November 04, 2011, 11:41:48 AM It should be card shaped like a moustache so you can hold it up to your face before you hand it to them.

It takes me to team Australia. Fixed. I had changed my MoBro link. Thanks for the heads up. I've been contemplating having a sorta business card I could hand out when I get the question (or more likely a quizzical look) that had some info and my homepage address on it. Anyone enterprising and graphically gifted want to take a shot at designing one for me? http://ca.movember.com/mospace/downloads/ - They have business cards that personalize themselves when you access the download page from your profile. Edit: The only downside to most of their customized stuff is that it's very muted on what exactly Movember is. I understand that it promotes people asking you and giving you the opportunity to explain beyond printed words, but it would still be nice to see something about Prostate Cancer. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge - Raising money for Prostate Cancer Research Post by: ghost on November 04, 2011, 01:13:40 PM I think your card should reflect the team name and general attitude by being a replica of Ron Swanson's face. :awesome_for_real: I think that is a great idea though, and something I would like to partake in if we get a good design.

I'm going into my new position and will be out in front a bit sooner than I thought, and since my facial hair is Terrible, there shall be no 'stache for me.
I look forward to seeing everyone else's progress. :oh_i_see: Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge - Raising money for Prostate Cancer Research Post by: lamaros on November 04, 2011, 05:20:44 PM I was going to do weekly updates, but there is a party tonight so I will get one in early.
Fucked up my back, going as a death row serial killer, and badly need a haircut... will be... special... Also I don't think NiX is actually doing this. His face is cleaner than my dishes. Title: Re: F13 Movember Challenge - Raising money for Prostate Cancer Research Post by: NiX on November 04, 2011, 09:38:05 PM Daily updates will do that. It's much harder to see the change. It should get a bit better by the middle of next week. Usually at about 5-6 days unshaved it goes from blonde and barely visible to brown and disgusting.
