It's drastically more than a few seconds on the hybrid drives. I have been using a hybrid drive since I purchased my PS4. What isn't much of a difference is between hybrid drives and SSDs. I almost pulled the trigger on the cheap 500 gb SSDs last cyber Monday, then I remembered that I have 850 GB in use on my PS4.

If you have ever played Destiny, I can load the tower and make it to the cryptarch before people with stock HDs load into the world.

If you haven't played Destiny, here is a map:

That's actually been my biggest complaint about the PS4 and the reason I'll get cross platform games for my PC.  I would much rather have them on PS4 due to my house layout.  I'll look into it.

I haven't had a gaming PC in 3 years now.

Here's a list of worthwhile PC games that I have missed:

I played Destiny at launch for about a week. (in real time - not a week /played) It wasn't very good.

The expansion they launched last fall? Super good. I played about 6 weeks real time, almost every day. I think it's a solid game at the moment.

That's good to know, I"m just going going off of what I read.  I plan to upgrade it to a higher capacity SSHD at some point since they are cheap.

An SSHD, even under optimal conditions (reading something it correctly anticipated needed to be on the SS cache) generally will still not perform as well as a good SSD. Whenever it guesses wrong and does not cache the data on the Solid State cache, it will perform no better than a normal HDD.

I'd rather do the managing of what needs to be on the SSD vs. the HDD. It's not hard: Games, programs that tend to do a lot of caching: On the SSD. Everything else: On the HDD.

Talking about the PS4. On a PC, just buy a SSD for everything. On a PS4, I'm not sure it makes sense to spend an equal amount of money on a SSD as it does the entire system.

1) The PS4 is built for blu-ray access patterns.
2) Which is some game data and sequential reads for level assets
3) Which is PRETTY EASY for SSHDs to understand

Here is what you can do to a stock PS4 for roughly $80 2 years ago. I don't know what the drive costs now. If it doesn't jump to the right part, skip ahead to 1m20s.

I didn't realize we were talking about a PS4. Yes, that would be a little different. And with literally every PS4 and XBone game running 40+ gig, you could eat up any reasonably priced SSD in a hurry.

Finally did the swap. Was pretty easy. Could have swapped the whole drive (applications included) but I was too lazy to clear the space to hold it (back up the 500gb system to the 2TB drive, save that on my PC, clear the 2TB drive, put it in, but the backup on the 500GB drive, restore...).

Seems fine. It's downloading tons of crap overnight, of course. And I'm not 100% sure all my codes transferred.

Otherwise, the most PITA part was I kept overlooking the full firmware download button in favor of the update button, which required me to run back and forth a bit before I felt like a moron and fixed it.

Maybe an hour, and that included popping in every game to trigger the downloads and re-selecting the digital stuff to download. Only thing I seem to have lost is a copy of Injustice: Gods Among Us, which I still have no idea why or how it appeared on my system anyways. I think my wife somehow got it for free when we first got the system, but it doesn't show up in her library.

Weird. Oh well, played it once and said "Fuck it, I suck at this shit".

Yeah, pretty sure that's how my wife got it. But it doesn't show up for either of our accounts. But other PS+ games we've purchased have. But perhaps not all of them. I might have forgotten a few.

Apparently his retirement was just as overhyped as his last five games.   why so serious?

His Twitter account was hacked and isn't retiring after all.  I would urge him to reconsider.

On the Molyneux note, did anyone see the news about an AI beating a good human Go player for the first time? I caught the news clip and the head of the AI team was none of than Demis Hassabis, of Republic:The Revolution/Bullfrog fame, and he still looks like a teenager.

I also didnt realise (or maybe forgot) he co-formed DeepMind and sold it Google for $625m and remains senior management.

Oh, but one thing.  Just a tiny thing.  Because of this insane schedule, and the fact that the game was going to be coming hot off the presses right as release happened, there wasn’t going to be time for advanced marketing, PR, awareness, etc.  No launch reviews.  Ugh!  But to combat that, we did a really big promotion with a Bionic Dues giveaway with Humble Store in exchange for a lot of promotional awareness about Starward Rogue.

If I'm reading this correctly they took on extra debt to push the game out the door as quickly as possible with no marketing or any sort of advance buzz. And the game is a lo-fi twin stick shooter, AKA the sort of game that comes out on Steam every week now.

In the modern Steam environment if you release a game with no existing buzz or marketing you will sell essentially nothing. How they would not know this after being on Steam for years is baffling to me.

Anyone who gives Molyneux a single penny for an early access game is either mentally ill or knows nothing about anything.

Molyneux is like a bad ex-girlfriend who isn't hot any more. "I swear I've changed - this time I mean it."

This is the same shit he says every time. Bonus points on doing a press tour about how he's not going to do press tours any more.

It makes me kind of sad because there is some talent in there somewhere, but it seems like the bullshit con artist side has consumed the talented side.

EDIT: So apparently, after you defeat the first island (circa 20 battles), the game throws up a $5 USD paywall to unlock the next island. In other words, the initial $15 USD only actually covers the first half of the content available on release day. For comparison, the $20 USD total price tag of the existing content is now on par with Age of Empires II HD, a fully finished, expansions-included, multiplayer-capable RTS with very favorable reviews. Nice!

Wow.

Wooooooow.

Bravo, Peter. Bra-vo. You fucking scumbag.

And of course, the store page makes no mention at all of a paywall in the game itself.

We really need Molyneux, Schafer, and Blow to bring us the ultimate crowd funded, experimental, high art, ground breaking, masterpiece of an adventure/puzzler/hit-a-button-repeatedly game.
