Yeah definitely would rather be IN the cage than ON the cage.

The head abrasions are from butting and boatmotors.  The flank damage is from other sharks, really big ones too.

It is hard to fathom the actual size of that creature.  I mean, we can see how big it is next to the people, but jesus.  That is a massive animal.

Drowning is one of my least favorite possible ways to die.  Drowning inside that beast has to be the absolute least favorite way to go.

Awesome pic.

Not only is it massive but look at the arc on the flank damage.  The bottom two look like they came from something even bigger than it.

Just look at how torn up that monster is.  Musta been in some serious brawls.  Or motorboat attacks.

There is a little bit of perspective issue going on with the size of the shark.  Due to there being nothing behind it, it's hard to tell how close it is to the camera/far from the cage.  It's definitely between the two though so not quite as big as it looks.  Still a grizzled old monster though.

If only we had a video or something taken at the same time to be able to really tell how big it actually was.

And as much as I hate linking to Facebook, here's a whole gallery of shots taken by the guy at the same time.

You're welcome!  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I'd guess it's a female as those sort of marks are common - they often get bitten on the flank by a male shark during sex.

I did not know that, very interesting.

The perspective shouldn't be an issue.  With the average height of the people in the cage being 5-6 ft and the largest whites coming in around 20ft, it could very well be that actual size.

I've tried to find the ship number, but the USS Exploding wasn't on record. Are you sure you have the name right? I found the USS Sinking and the USS Indebt but not the Exploding. I'm sure her crew were a volatile bunch.
