I googled up Sherwood Dungeon, having never heard of it. It's a dumbed-down kiddie MMO, but the graphics are good for this sort of thing, and it was dead-easy to log into. I was impressed to be running a character around a reasonably decent looking 3D world within three minutes of hitting the site.

Phantasy Star Online should be higher. The problem is that it's not a Top 10 title. It's a Top 20.
It doesn't feel like an MMO to me. Even Guild Wars seemed to have more of a world than PSO. Also, it depends on the version. Original PSO was a fucking nightmare, between the greifers and the glitches and their goddamn "anti-cheating measures". I think I'm the only one in this entire thread to list PSO in their top 10. Why did I? Well, I haven't played more than 10 MMOs, so right there it makes it. Also, PSO was the very first online game I played so it gets nostalgia points for that. I still keep in touch with some friends I made in that game, which is more than I can say about some of the other games I listed. I find the bottom part of this list incredibly interesting.
In what way? ( cam'on, like you didn't think some one was going to ask.) EDIT: You know what i would find interesting is if someone placed the development cost of each of those titles next to them. I see a lot of indi titles on the bottom of the list. The funniest thing I've seen on the list is The Matrix Online has only just now finally managed to tie Furcadia in the rankings. Think about that.

Yep. Blizzard's not calling all their analysts or anything over it. But it's indicative of what's possible. But I only mentioned it because it was a one-man operation. A better example of modern-thinking browser-based MMOs are the Flash/Java ones. Instead of forcing crappy 3D into a browser window like Sherwood or those ActiveWorlds applet things, developers balance the "low tech" with more heavy styling in the art, for things like Adventure Quest or even the much-mentioned Club Penguin (Webkinz too but I don't consider that an MMO). There's also games I consider as browser-viable except they're currently download based, like Ragnarok, Dofus, Maplestory. But they are also pretty asset-intensive, which might explain the upfront download (as well as maybe some DRM/tech stuff). There's only so much data you want to be streaming since the purpose of browser-games is to cast as wide a net as possible, including to schools with five year old PCs and low-end broadband.

Late to the party I know but so the fuck what?
1. SWG-pre NGE (first MMO played, loved loved loved it! Spent the first three months pissing around without even exploring half the game or doing dungeons or stuff - just exploring and doing stuff and chilling with my fantastic guild. Then JTL came out and I spent all my time in space. Miss it a lot.) 2. WOW (surprise?) 3. LOTRO (where my old SWG guild went and I followed. Don't play it much but pretty much enjoy it when I do. Very pretty game.) 4. EVE - as much as I didn't want to get involved in this, I did. Would prefer more JTL twitch style play though. It just doesn't quite give me what I want as space games go. 5. Guild Wars (for the prettiness) 6. EQ2 - because it's the only other game I played for more than a couple of weeks before I suddenly realised what a fucking timesink it was. Random quest spawns on a 6 hour timer? WTF? Also, every time I went to the Crossroads, I kept thinking "The Barrens is a better place"
Tried but never got into Anarchy Online, DAOC, CoX.

Late you are not!
In fact, everyone has until January 21st (PotBS launch day) to vote. Would be so cute to reach 200, but I doubt it.

1.Runescape Agility, farming, Al Kharid, Cooking, the Haunted Mansion, trading are just some of the things that make Runescape a special game. If the game allowed for faster skilling up it would be close to perfect for such a low tech game.
2.World of Warcraft Ogrimar, Lorderon, Undead storyline, Warrior, Mage, Shadowfang Keep, Arathi Basin are some of the things that make World of Warcraft a great game.
3.Eve Online SPAAAACCE!, the increasing size of ships, the economy, the music, being able to enjoy Eve when not playing it are some of the things that make Eve standout from the rest for me.
The Above three are games I actually ended up paying for.
4.Planetside Pop lock. Nothing else needs to be said about what makes Planetside an epic experience. I was considering on paying for this but decided not to after Sony increased the subscription fee.
The above are my top 4. The rest just fill out the bottom after a big gap.
5. Pending for a better game to come along. 6. Pending for a better game to come along. 7. See above 8. You know the drill
9. 9Dragons (pun not intended) 10. Anarchy Online (sad but 9dragons was better to me because metagaming 9dragons was more amusing than actually playing Anarchy).

First came the ones I played for years and years.
1. World of Warcraft - This game is so tightly wound into my history, and continues to be to current day, I can't say it is any less then the best. Arenas continue to be the most fun activity in that game. 2. EverQuest - Another game that incorporated itself into 5 years of my life, on and off. It doesn't have to be good, it was just the first. 3. Ultima Online - I was so awful at this game. I was too big of a newbie to get into anything meaningful like my friends were, but this game was just a big fun sandbox. Yay sandbox! I think I've made more comebacks to this game then even EverQuest.
Every game beyond these three never managed to hook me for more then a few months at a time.
4. EverQuest 2 - My first time in this game was more fun then my comeback, but regardless, still a great contender. If WoW hadn't come out when it did, I suspect this game would have done a lot better. 5. Shadowbane - I never really played this game very far past beta, aside from a comeback or two when it was free, but I always remember this game as the game where I started to be unafraid to pvp. 6. Dark Age of Camelot - I came back a few times to this game. Always fun, even though I never got to the RvR sections, which supposedly was the whole dang point of it. Even so, crafting was fun, as was low level pvp on my... uh... Albion wizard guy during the latest comeback. One-shotting people at low health was hilarious. 7. Guiid Wars - Man, I wanted to love this game so much more then I did. I made a few comebacks, and I never really understood the game until my latest comeback, when I actually made it to 20. Fun stuff, I can see the appeal. 8. City of Heroes/Villians - It's the character creator/travel skill game. Other then that, kind of grindy, but y'know. I came back a few times to this. 9. Lord Of The Rings Online - This game was quite a clever and polished game, it's sad I was too entrenched in WoW to really care about it. The whole lorebook thing was sweet. 10. Star Wars Galaxies - Never played this Post-NGE, so it's still not a terrible game in my head. I only made one comeback after launch, and it was kind of lonely. I had a free respec, so I went some dorky melee spec. A quirky game, but was very world-y and fun in that respect.

1) Dark Age of Camelot - RvR, that's all (up to 1.47 or so, then devs started "smoking" too much). 2) None 3) None - (1 minute of silence here due to the gap between DAoC and all of the others) - 4) World of Warcraft - The "perfect" game for the masses (good and easy PvE, stupid PvP). 5) Lord of the Rings Online - The fascinating "easy way" (if You are not playing the "creep side"). 6) Ultima Online - No more words about it, I am bored. 7) Star Wars Galaxies - Wookie wannabe. The swg feeling and its music... wow. N) City of Heroes, Everquest 2, Lineage 2

Are people just applying their own rules for making these lists? Because this is the most whack one yet. He's got 8 titles and is only awarding 5 of them points with a 2-space gap in the middle of his list. I mean, shit. Your second favorite is your SECOND FAVORITE, not "Sure I'll pick it second but that's only until something comes along that is a second, and let's fucking say third favorite for me." This is the only place I've seen Top Ten lists where there are actually gaps in the list. Can you imagine if major sites did this? That'd be hilarious!

We were following the rules. There's nothing that says we can't have gaps. There is a rule that say we rate things based on our analysis. In our analysis there are things that clearly don't deserve their spot. Can't wait for this to be updated. Would like to see something like this done again in other sizeable messageboards like Foh or mmorpg.

It doesn't matter since every incremental vote for the last few weeks hasn't been enough to move the list significantly. The consensus spoke as of a month ago and now it is just noise.

Impressive that the "Big 3" (UO, AC, EQ) all stayed in the top 10 after all these years. Strong nostalgia or just solid MMOGs? You decide(d)!
