http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=163233 The Xbox 360's lack of a guaranteed hard disk is creating limitations in Grand Theft Auto IV's development, Rockstar has acknowledged.
During an interview with our partners in crime at Official PlayStation Magazine, Rockstar's creative vice president Dan Houser was asked: "On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?" To which he replied, "Yep."
He continued, "To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet." The difficulties aren't limited to working on Microsoft's box, as Houser explains that "both have enormous challenges" and that "both have their own particular pleasures and pains".
Advertisement: Rockstar hasn't said anything about a target SKU between the two consoles, but they're currently demoing the game to press running on an Xbox 360 - so we wouldn't worry too much if you've only got Microsoft's console. Look for more on GTA IV in the next few weeks. Well, a lot of us had been predicting this since it was announced that Xbox 360 would have a Core version with no harddrive. It seems that Rockstar is having problems designing the game around the fact that some Xboxs might not have a hard drive or HD-DVD player. I dont know what Microsoft could do about this. Personally I think they should just starting making games have requirements like (Harddrive required), but that would get a lot of people upset. Where does Microsoft go from here?

You know what games don't need?
Blu-Ray.
Where does microsoft go? Getting rid of that stupid fucking core system and dropping the price on the premium $100 and making the old crap small HDD cheap cheap cheap.

On these things, we agree 100%.

On these things, we agree 100%. The bit about Blu-Ray, in a perfect world, would have been green. But I think you knew that.

Obviously they will soon release the Xbox 360 Sigma... since they already released the 360 Black. Whatever, at least it's not going to be a PS2 game.

Does Microsoft currently have some sort of policy stating that you aren't allowed to publish a game unless it supports HD-less play?

I always thought it was a poor decision by MS to make the HDD optional, when it was such a great feature on the original Xbox.

I'm indifferent to blu-ray, but I agree on the badness of the core system. They never even offered it for sale here, but I suppose the US is an enormous market, so it was an initial-release thing to maximise "bums on seats", especially against the PS2. And continuing to be now, I suppose.

The funny thing about the shitty core systems is that nobody buys them anyway as far as I can tell.
Making a feature like the hard drive optional was of course quite stupid. How do you deal with that? Make your game essentially use the HD only as an added bonus? Or cut out the market that has core systems?

HD Instlall is optional on PS3 games. It should be on 360 games. There's really no reason whatsoever to not offer it.
