This is probably redundant for most of you, since you all troll the same blogs and boards I do, but given F13's history, there should be some mention of it somewhere.

Here's Lum's link, also Amber Night's.

Den this if I missed a posting of this already.

Good luck and whatnot.

Still, leaving Mythic when they are about to finally have their big break, leaving EA's money, leaving a purebred stallion by the name of Warhammer...

Now I am really curious about what kind of job she locked in....

Good for Sanya (the leaving EA's money thing). I'm sure she'll land on her feet. Bad for Mythic, though, as they are going to need a good PR person in their future. But who the fuck wants to work for EA?

The interview on Warcry doesn't sound like she has anything locked in.

Really liked Lums post. (even if reads just a tad like an obituary!)

Sanya's professional though direct approach to forum posts, axing of the official boards, strongly encouraging email feedback, and running the regular grab bag system, is without doubt the best model anyone has built so far.

On the off chance that Sanya reads this thread, first off, good luck, and second, while you are between roles, any chance of an update here...

Best of luck to you Sanya (does she actually read us?), your honesty was always very refreshing in this industry.

Mythic's loss is someone's gain.  I am surprised that Mythic didn't realize her value enough to do whatever they needed to do to keep her, frankly.

I suspect she may have overreached. Some new company policy, to which she objected, they said 'too bad, its on', and she said 'fine, have it your way, g'bye!'. Could have been something as simple as a switch in retirement plans, but she can't talk about it without bringing down the legal hoo haa, and probably making her hubby's life hell.

Gah, will the roadtrips be worth going to without Sanya there now? I have fond memories of last year's San Diego roadtrip at Dave and Buster's and their Comic-Con booth. Was hoping for the same experience this year.

I wish her well, not that she'll have any problems, though.

Maybe it wasn't Mythic's call? Doesn't EA have some history of bringing "the corporate way" to the smaller companies it absorbs? Which involves some ejection of cells that don't think corporate thoughts from the body corporate.

That was my guess as well, that higher-up marketing directors/VPs in EA flexed muscle and she wasn't having any of it and it came to a head.  Always thought of her as the "anti-Abashi" which is about the highest praise I could think of for someone with that job.

Stupid question: 1) who is Amber Knight, 2) why should I care, 3) is she as self-absorbed as I think she is?

She's a female in some way connected with gaming.  Knowing literally nothing about her, odds are she is self-absorbed.  That's another thing that made Tweety so special, her writing didn't have that "EVERYONE IN VIDEOGAMELAND WANTS TO HAVE SEX WITH ME CAUSE THEIR DESPERATE VIRGIN GAMERS" vibe.

Wow, yea, I just got that same impression reading it for the first time. It reads like someone going off to spend time with her family, or to a sanitarium or something. Probably not his intent, more laced with emotion because of his long-ish history working with her.

In any case, I don't get how this thread went from well-wishes to some conspiracy about her rubbing EA the wrong way. Sure that COULD have happened, but is there some foundation to this speculation, something said somewhere that implied a split with EA?

I was curious too when I saw her name mentioned and blog linked on numerous  dev blogs and mmo sites.  Here's what I found on Google:

Quote from: GoogleFu

"My name is Amber Night–made up last name because it’s such a tech chic thing to do. I am a somewhat reluctant game designer. Designer isn’t really an apt description either. I write content for a game in progress, which I will be able to tell you about someday. I am also a gamer, one of those slackers who will never amount to anything in her life. I have a friend, also a slacker gamer, and we’ve been gaming together for a few years. He’s been doing game design for many years, mostly in the pen & paper arena, and has even had a few things published. He’s what you call a serious designer. I on the other hand am a poser, so you can see my reluctance. Still, he thinks he sees something in me, so whatever it’s his dime.

I actually wanted to teach math to high school students. I mean, I spent (and am still spending) a whole wad of cash getting this whole math degree thing, I feel like I should probably use it. But long story short, I’m not really doing that right now. Right now, I’m making weather models for the gubmit. It’s probably more fun than teaching high school, with the added bonus that I get paid a living wage.

So after I finished my math degree at the University of Colorado, I moved out here to sunny central California. And here I am, working and starting to make a game. Someday I’ll get to tell you all about it, but for now you’ll have to be content with my little journal. Or by now you’ve hopefully figured out that you made a typo in Google, and will be on your way. Either way, thanks for the page hit!

In my view, as a customer, Sanya was doing an outstanding job. She says she wants to stay in the town where Mythic is headquartered, so why should she leave? Couple that with the cynical observation that doing an outstanding job (for the customer) is often a bad career move in a giant corporation like EA. Leads to the "rubbing EA the wrong way" hypothosis.

I noticed Mark Jacobs was logged as reading the thread when I was reading it earlier. Not surprisingly, he doesn't seem to want to comment..

Probably not any more self-absorbed as anyone else (certainly not as self-absorbed as me).  I'm curious, though, as to why she strikes you this way.  Because she's a chick with her pic on her blog?  I've run across links to her blog before, probably from Lum and/or Raph's site, maybe other sites as well.  She's never struck me as a bimbo, high maintenance or "hey look at me, I'm a chick irl!"

Sometimes it seems like women just can't win - people either slag 'em because their looks aren't up to standard or call them self-absorbed if they are.  Seriously, there's an impossible standard for women for some reason.

What's your problem with her?

I believe the phrase that best illustrates the latter is:

SirBruce... to the rescue!!!

She's never struck me as a bimbo, high maintenance or "hey look at me, I'm a chick irl!"

Her article on Sanya contained no more information then I got from the Lum + Warcry interview (actually, it contained quite a bit less, but let's be generouis).  She must know about Lum and his blog, she should have read his entry (he may not have posted yet?).  She obviously read the Warcry interview. I concluded that she just likes to hear herself talk.  but!...

What's your problem with her?

I have no problem.  In fact, that she reads and posts on f13 raises my opinion of her.  And let's be clear - my opinion is important to me and... well, that's about it.

My thougth process went like this: Someone (Engels, long time poster, not a wacko) linked to her on f13.  f13 has a large number of regulars who have little tolerance for self-absorbtion.  Confusion!  It occurred to me that my snap judgement might be wrong and that she might have interesting things to say so I came here and posted the question.  Honestly, I was hoping for a "she's cool, cut her some slack".

Sometimes it seems like women just can't win - people either slag 'em because their looks aren't up to standard or call them self-absorbed if they are.  Seriously, there's an impossible standard for women for some reason.

I think you personally (and women, blacks, special interest group X, etc) can start to "win" if you never, ever are the first one to bring sex (or race, or special interest concern X) into a conversation that isn't about special interest concern X.  Simply asking, "why can't women win" shows a bias in your thinking.  It shows that you think your pain and struggles are more important then everyone else's.  I honestly think that if people would spend more time just doing whatever it is they want to do, and less time thinking about how they never get respect the whole issue would just go away.

Apologies to Sanya for being a (big?) part in derailing this thread.  I played DAOC and and while I played I read you Grab Bag every Friday night.  I think you did an awesome job.  My total experience with DAOC was much better the EQ.  Thinking back, I'd have to say that you were a big part of that (thus the anti-abashi comment, which was meant as high praise, but I don't think that came through).  Thanks and good luck with whatever is next for you.
