Damn kids, get off my lawn!

I bought a new puter, core 2 dual, 2 gig, with the nvidia 8800 GTS 640 MB w/DVI and TV out video. While checking out among the many add ons was a 17 inch LCD monitor (ViewSonic 17" TFT LCD Monitor) for $170.00. The thing is honking beautiful side by side with my 5 year old CRT it is night and day so I have been hot to buy a monitor that would do my new vid card Justice and put the new 17" on my old system. Well I bought an AKAI 27" wide screen TV (LCT 2785TA) and this baby has inputs!! It has SPDIF optical, RS232, HDMI, D SUB VGA, {Y Pb Pr L R} ( 2 times), S vid (2 times), Coax (TV), Ant ( DTV). Well it didn't come with cables. Scrounging around I found an svid cable and hooked it up. was pretty awful and I couldn't set the resolution to 720p or 1080i as I had the 17" LCD hocked up also as I didn't think I would be able to read the text with out it. So my questions are...
1) This guy supports 480 i, 480p, 720p, 1080i. Which resolution is gonna work better? I am assuming 720p but an LCD is not gonna interlace anyway right?
2) What is the prefired cable from the vid card to the monitor? My 17" LCD seems to be VGA to a DVI/VGA adaptor. It sure does look good.
Thank you in advance for you comments. I consider myself a bit of a gear head but in this case I would really like to hear your thoughts.

Go with 720p through hdmi/dvi or component.

I don't understand what you are trying to do. Are you trying to hook up both a 17" LCD and that Akai TV to your new computer? Or just one of them? For the best picture on both you want to use a DVI to DVI cable to connect to the 17" monitor, assuming it has a DVI input, and a DVI to HDMI cable to connect to the TV. To use the TV as a PC monitor you want to set the resolution to 1366 x 768 which is the native resolution of that display.

Thanks guys. I ordered a hdmi/dvi cable last night thanks to your input. And thanks to trippy for pointing out native resolution as that was what I was really asking in question 1 of my original post. My goal here is to get the 27" talking to the 8800GTS. I kept the 17" connected because between the "S" video connection and non native resolution (and an old farts eyesight) I was afraid I would not be able to read the text. I don't know what component means. If it is better than hdmi/dvi please explain. If its a wash either / or please don't worry about it as the fix is in the works.

Component isn't better, but not really worse either. It's just analog.
Also, why do you have the 17" on an S video connection again? That's pretty crappy. You should be VGA'ing/DVI'ing that thing.

The 17" is on a VGA/ to HDMI adaptor and is a beautiful thing. I lack cables for the 27" and "S" video was the only thing I had at hand. I was trying to get input as to the best cabling to the 27" so I could get it on order. Thats why I tried to point out the ports on both ends. It would seem that there are lots of ways to connect and even I know "S" video isn't the best answer.

Component is the {Y Pb Pr} stuff. Getting your video card to output component would take a lot of work so don't worry about it. However you can hook your video game consoles to those connections if you have the proper cables.

A bump for a sanity check. Cables just arrived and I am typing this with the 27" connected. The 1366 X 768 is not showing as an option. I am running at 720p with pretty nice results. Thanks again all.

If you don't have a specific profile for your monitor you'll need to set a custom resolution through your video driver control panel.
