Before half-life 2 is released, two things are going to happen. XSI software company will release a special version of their rendering software that only works with half-life 2, but thankfully is completely free.

The second thing that must happen is the sacrifice of the virgi...hah I had you going. the 2nd thing is hammer, the editor for half-life 2 gets released.

Well this wednesday the special xsi software gets released, coinciding with the special training seminars at the game developers conference. I just hope the damn thing gets released this summer, because if its released in the fall my grades are fucked.

Rarely does something come up that I am both intrigued enough to want to know more, yet not intrigued enough to google the sucker up. This is one of those rare times. So...

XSI softwave is pretty damn nice. Theres about 3 to 5 major 3d modelling companies out there, and xsi sees this as a way to get thousands of 15 year olds to become accustome to xsi softwave and build their brand image. The modders for hl2 get 1000 dollars of software without having to use warez like they often do.

XSI softwave is nice. For free, its defintely the best modelling program ever.

XSI Softwave? That's the funniest mutation of SoftImage|XSI I've ever heard. But yeah, it's a cool app.

Didn't the GDC start today? Or sometime this week? I know WoW is being demo'd there. I wonder if Valve is bringing any kind of demo or fly through for Half Life 2. Hopefully they give some kind of status update this week.

This will be cool if more games adopt XSI SoftImage.  I haven't used it myself but occaisionally I like to add a model or two to a game a really enjoy using another very expensive piece of software that I haven't paid for just purely as a hobby.

So a full featured 3D modelling and animation package that's free and has wide usage for importing into games would be great.

Got a call from Boeing while writing this, the end of the call asked me when I could start so I guess thats a good sign, unless he was just going off a checklist.  Said I was one of three they were considering.  Jobs in Houston though and I would have to relocate.   Wish I had known more about MFC.  Said he would call back in a day or two.

Interesting, so the halflife bundle linked HERE isnt going to be out till sometime tomorrow, while the XSI EXP bundle linked HERE
is already available for free download (provided you slap a bunch of info into their form)

Any idea what the difference between the two could possibly be?
Both verions are supposed to be Softwave XSI EXP

There's no actual release date naturally, but the rumor mills say Half Life 2's release will fall in either April (doubtful) or June (most likely, and just in time for my birthday).

Of course, in my vain little universe god gets a hard on torturing me, so it'll get delayed again after a semi full of fireworks hits Valve's offices.

My guess is they ripped mental ray out of the HL2 version of XSI but put the exporters for the HL2 file formats in. Maybe something like that. Possibly they change the skin here and there a bit, applying HL2 colors (orange and shit). Who knows.
