I just received and email from Turbine.  It sounds like they are getting desperate.  I have not played for nearly a year.  I might log on just cuz its free, but I highly doubt they will win me back.

Here's the text portion of the email:

You’ve missed a lot of great new content in Dungeons & Dragons Online™: Stormreach™ (DDO), and we’d love to have you come back and see what’s new. We’ve reactivated your account for the weekend of March 16th-18th; all you have to do is log back in to experience real adventure.

Return to DDO and experience a +50% experience bonus this weekend. As an added incentive, we’re going to increase the loot level in treasure chests by +1 and run special in-game events over the course of the weekend.

Come back and see all the great new features we’ve added since you left, including:

More Levels & Adventure: Your character can now advance to 12th level (rank 60), and we’ve added more than 60 new adventures since launch.

More Solo Play: We’ve added content specifically geared toward solo play. Come try it out for yourself!

New Enhancement System: Every rank counts! With 60 ranks—and 10 more coming in April—creating unique characters that match your play style is easier than ever! Specialize or generalize, the choice is yours!

Favor System: Earning the favor of the Houses of Stormreach opens up the drow race, 32-point character builds, and extra character slots! Your character can earn expanded bank and inventory space, increased run speeds, long-lasting spell effects, and more!

32-point character builds

What is standard? 30? The munchkin version of carrot on a stick, I guess.

I have never played WoW.

That doesn't necessarily mean they are desperate. I get those for other games I've subscribed to and have cancelled. Well okay the game probably isn't doing well (I doubt they've broken 100K subscribers) but that sort of email is still SOP for many MMOs.

Everyone seems to do those free "come back" trials from time to time.  DDO was probably just as desperate when the game launched to what seemed to be a pretty small, luke warm audience.  I don't think things went as well as they hoped it would.  Maybe the whole D&D era is just plain done.  (Sorry, dorky people!)  Anyway... do they still have some sort of expansion or "module" thingamajellyroll coming out soon?  I remember they announced it like ten minutes after they released the game, which I thought was weird.  I also remember it being listed on EB but now it seems to be gone.

Next time I won't get coffee in the middle of posting because it's obvious that Trippy peeks through my window and laughs as he posts what I'm going to say.  Dammit.

a +50% experience bonus this weekend.

DDO - where even double xp weekend is half-assed.

DDO is a game best played with 3-4 friends.  Other than that, it really never held my interest.  At least in WoW/EQ2/CoX I could have a reasonable amount of fun solo.

Yeah, I would actually go back and give it another whirl, but the fact that my friends, well, wouldn't.  My wife, maybe, out of a misplaced sense of loyalty, but not the two others that it wuold require to actually have fun.  And, in any case, LOTRO beckons.

I have 3 real life friends that play DDO weekly and even that isn't enough to get me to play the game.  Re-running missions where you know all the trap locations really ruins it for me.

I'm sad. I had actually planned on logging on once just to look, what with all the nostalgia for the couple months I played it. But then I remembered the hardcore munchkining that the game forces you into just to be a little useful and decided I shouldn't ruin the good memories with a second go.

After my initial post, I completely forgot about logging in until Sunday morning.  Once I did fire up the client, it had to update about 4500 files since the last time I played.

Between that download/install time and a busy Sunday -- I did not even get a chance to re-try it.

Oh well, Life goes on.....

Sounds like you still got the better end of the deal, though....
