Sort of. ffdshow uses libavcodec - the OSS library used by ffmpeg which is available to MPlayer and VLC on Ubuntu. So essentially you can get all the same funcitonality but it requires some CLI work and familiarity with the tools.

I believe the nvidia binary drivers support hardware decoding based on the capabilities of your card, although I haven't had a chance to look into that in any detail myself.

Btw, getting ATI drivers to work with Fedora Core 6 and the desktop effects manager, be it Beryl or the other one out there is a ROYAL SCREAMING PAIN IN THE NECK.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

DRM in Windows Vista
http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2007/02/drm_in_windows.html

Quote
Windows Vista includes an array of "features" that you don't want. These features will make your computer less reliable and less secure. They'll make your computer less stable and run slower. They will cause technical support problems. They may even require you to upgrade some of your peripheral hardware and existing software. And these features won't do anything useful. In fact, they're working against you. They're digital rights management (DRM) features built into Vista at the behest of the entertainment industry.

And you don't get to refuse them.

The best part of SWG was the easy account cancellation process.

Haven't tried it with Fedora, but I've had varying success with Debian, too.  As for Windows, I've had no problem, and I've been using ATI since my Rago Pro Turbo with 8 MB of onboard ram.

The only reason you have issues with ATI and games is nVidia gives stuff (money?  definately cards, maybe whole machines) to Devs of games so they can code to the nVidia cards, and fixes for ATI cards are usually not a big priority.  They also encourage use of nVidia-specific GL/DX extensions, which just don't work on ATI cards.  I haven't discovered if ATI has a similar program, but it seems like a lot of games/demos these days open with that stupid whispering nVidia logo.

I disagree with what you said.

True - you can get a lot of third party apps that are > or = to MCE for XP. Your cost will vary for premium applications though (nvidia codecs, TheaterTek) etc.

I guess it depends on what you mean by htpc, eh? I'm pretty much an HD snob, so tv tuners don't really float my boat since nothing is HD, HD opticals are still prohibitive, except maybe the 360 HD-DVD drive. So in the truest sense of htpc, I'll grant MCE and a lot of custom stuff is good. For gaming and DVDs, my three-year old pc has been kicking HD ass all along.

My HTPC is connected to my 56" DLP and a Digital Receiver. In my experience you can't really get optimal image/sound via DVI/SPDIF out of Win XP without 3rd party applications, irrespective of source - games excluded as they aren't undergoing any decoding, that's just a 1280x720 signal from your GPU. I also have HD PVR working now from my motorola box via Firewire under Ubuntu, although it's somewhat tricky to work. So I'm primarily talking DVD, HD and WMV/DivX content. I don't use a tuner.
