I can't seem to find the Final Fantasy XII thread, although I could swear I've been there before.

My son has played Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss (several times for each), and enjoyed them very much.  (They're rated T, and I'm ok with the content for him).

Is FFXII similar to the Tales games?  I haven't played one in a very very long time.

As for being similar to the Tales games.. no idea.

XII has a more mature and political  plot than other FFs. Very similar to the plots from Star Wars IV to VI.  There's some violence,  murders, and a close up of a mercy killing that you see in cutscenes.  Only questionable material that I can think of.

My 9 yo son, almost 10, plays mostly club penguin, bots, some WOW, and a little GW.  He hasn't tried the Tales or FF games so can't really help you, but let me know what he thinks of FFXII if you get it.

I think the question to ask is: how much different (worse?) is the content of [insert game in question] from what the kid watches on TV?

Just as an example...we had a guy who was recently given a Gamecube come in and pick up Smash Bros. Melee. It was mostly for his 7 or 8 year old son. Having played the game to death, I did not forsee any problems.

When, lo and behold, the guy is sent back yesterday to trade it back in, because the mother flipped out when she saw the T rating on the game, and some of the gameplay. This is what made me think to ask you my first question because, really...Super Smash Bros. - too violent for 3rd/4th grader? Are you Kidding me? Do they watch TV at all?

If he played through Tales of the Abyss. He's ready.

I played FF4 multiple times, and I think at that age, the subjects were just as serious, just not so graphically...there. Tellah's daughter dying, Palom and Porom's sacrifice, etc. Ok, maybe actually the end results in FF4 were sadder than FF12.

Tales of the Abyss - I've been playing it just recently - is the best Tales game in years. The recipe system is nearly as complex as anything in FF12 short of the gambit system, you may have to explain procedure to him a bit.

My opinion? All lights are green. He'll love it.

Heh, I didn't get through FF4 until the GBA remake, so **SPOILER** the twins in my game lived.

Also, better artwork. But god dammit if that final boss did not take like 20+ minutes to whittle down when I finally put a boss run together that didn't involve the guy spamming me with the (practically) 1-shot spell non-stop.

EDIT: On Topic - Yeah, I'd let a 10 year old kid play FFXII. Then again, I was allowed to play Mortal Kombat when I was 8 or 9. My mom laughed at the blood graphics.

Also, I don't have kids.  :-D

Yeah, I'd say 10 years old is just about the right age for an FF game as it more or less seems to be the age they're written for give or take a couple years.

I let my oldest nephew pretty much do as he liked on my computer by the time he was 11 or 12.  He was smarter and more mature than me, anyway.  I found some sort of porn game thingy that he and his friend played around with when he was 14.  So what?  When I was 14 most of the people my age who I knew were having sex (NOT ME)  and doing drugs.  (NOT M... err)   For his 14th birthday, I got him tickets to Slayer.  His mom could have killed me.  It didn't even occur to me that it wasn't appropriate.

Anyway, my advice is:  Don't listen to me!

Oh, oh!  Slayer will be at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC in February!  This is a decent size tour and I bet they'll even accidentally play Canada!
