Subject says it all. When this was out I was interested in playing in it, and now I can. Servers are down for a bit, but it's completely free asking for donations. Did anyone spend any time with it? What's the scoop? <--- dumbass Here's the link to the game: http://www.rubiesofeventide.com/

Damn, you really are bored as fuck? I never heard one thing about this that made me think it didn't suck major kinds of ass.
But it's free, so at least the pain is lessened.

But it's free, so at least the pain is lessened. Lineage 2 open beta was free too. Except for your soul. Edit: Apparently even free, dated, and most likely crappy MMOGs hate me. Won't install. Meh.

It's basically a crappy MUD with graphics. Doesn't that apply to every MMOG to date?

I played it a bit. They had some good *concepts*, like trying to implement a turn based MMORPG combat system and having a character generation system with a great deal of freedom to it.
However, they bit off more than they could chew. They built this a fairly large world zone (I'd say about as big as the West Karanas in EQ), but they didn't have the time or manpower to populate it - a whole dungeon near the town was empty when I tried it towards teh end of retail. They built this massive skill pool, including selections such as Caligraphy, but they didn't have the time or manpower to get all the abilities coded that needed adding. Entire spell lines were missing.
That they had managed enough drive to manifest a MMORPG at all is fairly remarkable - certainly more than I've ever established. However, it was a long way from finished when it was a pay game, and I suspect it will remain that way as a free game.

I found it to be a semi-decent EQ clone - except for the fact that 80% of the game wasn't finished. In that sense, it's the perfect example of "Anti-CoH" - instead of picking a few things and implementing them well, they picked a bazillion things and implemented them poorly or not at all. Their ads claimed 100 or so professions, but neglected to mention that even on character creation, many of them would be met with "not implemented" messages, should you try to pick them.
I enjoyed the engine back when I tried it, and the fact that zombie models were "normal" models with grey skins - made them actually feel like undead to a greater extent than the comic-book-like zombies in other games.

Played it... Freecell or minesweeper brought me more joy.
My advice: Play more MtGO.

My advice: Play more MtGO. Good enough. Uninstalled and back to MtGO.

Isn't nethack like rogue (the ascii Diablo predecessor)?
I may have to check that out for nostalgia if for nothing else.

Personally I prefer ADOM over Nethack. There's been a few new interesting roguelikes out there I haven't really had the chance to mess around with much, though. I remember one was actually built around having a giant robot.

For some reason I've been fiddling with the old ascii rogue like games again. It's sort of fun. I just dragged Dungeon Hack out of the bottom of the cupboard, another Rogue inspired game. My husband throws nothing away. I've been thinking about Zork today, too. My brain seems to be reverse engineering itself.
I can't get ABBA's Fernando out of my head, either. :(

Zangband or Cthangband all the way, baby. Old Moria had scares like Ancient Multi-hued Dragon. A PANSY! Bring on Yog-Sothoth, I say.
Turnbased ASCII combat for teh retro feel.

The best part of SWG was the easy account cancellation process.

There's always MAngband, if you need a multiplayer game fix... Apparently the guy I met a couple years ago, who was the primary dev for the game, has long since turned it over to someone else. Ah well. -- Alkiera
